Thanks to the forum, I have been learning many techniques while avoiding some mistakes. I have a decent success rate with Jon's new baggie method. I have been also experimenting with the "bury then forget about them" method. About 2 months ago, I buried many cuttings about 1 inch deep horizontally in the shade under a tree. Many buds with new leaves are popping out. Now the question is how do I pot them up. The 1-gallon pot has a 6-inch diameter, and most of my cuttings are between 8 to 12 inches long. Can I cut each cutting into 2 shorter pieces, and lay them horizontally in 1-gallon pots, or do I have to use bigger pots?

Cutting them into shorter sections will work fine as long as each section has some roots and a bud.

Agree with Aaron!  This is the way the Greeks did it.  The old ones....... They know!

Thank you, Aaron and Suzi, for the advice. I will cut them up and pot them up.

If cutting them into smaller sections is not possible yet...plant them into shallow, plastic, storage containers that are used for blankets, sweaters, linens etc.  The are usually very shallow, and are made to slip/store under a bed.  Home Depot has them, as well as The Container Stores, Bed, Bath, and Beyond....etc.

Fill them with growing medium after drilling some drainage holes, and you're good to go.  These shallow storage containers are also very easy to bury, in-ground, when you want to use this method for rooting longer stems.  Then, just lift the boxes, and continue the growth cycle until they put out a good root system...then you can divide them into individual sections.  Just another alternative.

I would wait until dormancy then divide. Less stress on all.
