I was looking through the Burpee seed catalog, and noticed that they are selling a potted fig tree called called the "Letizia Fig" ($13.95)...they advertize it as a 'family heirloom' from Italy...I looked it up on Encanto Farms list of varieties, but found no info on this fig...has anybody heard of this fig, or know anything about it? |

Letizia is a pretty common name in some parts. My guess is that it is another unknown someone brought with them a few generations ago that Burpee decided to use to jump on the bandwagon. It is entirely likely a fig on Jon's list by another name. |

Someone on the other forum labeled it as Brown turkey, I find that unlikley and the catalog description calls it a classic unkown from Italy..for $13, Vince are you going to take chance? ! |

Jack...I already did...made my purchase back on 1/5/13...just wanted to get input from other folks because I could not find it on Encanto website...I'm not sure that it is a brown turkey because Burpee offered two types of fig trees back in Jan.....one was the Letizia the other was a Brown Turkey !! |

I talked with Steve Castorani last spring, he said his trees in Landenberg PA had taken some damage but he was not sure how much. It was an exceptionally cold winter with lows below zero so it is no surprise. He gave a tree to a mutual friend and it looks like an Etna fig to me. |

chuck, I do have Letiza---several of them. I got 4 small plants last year from Burpee and the funnies thing happened 2 weeks ago. They reshipped me 4 more without me ordering them! I called and told them. They said to just enjoy them---it was their mistake! The figs look just like Florea to me--even taste like it. Very sweet tasting. But I am not sure if they are super hardy like Florea though. I forgot to monitor them last year. |

I got a Letizia last year. It ripened a few fruit last season. It had a taste profile similar to Hardy Chicago in my opinion. |

My Letizia arrived this spring from Burpee. It struggled until I moved it into a #6900 nursery pot. It took off and produced several figs, one of which rippened in December. Its taste was about like you would expect for a December fig. I am looking forward to this next season. Leaves and figs look like ones in above photos. |

Well I have to say, this was one of my best tasting figs this year! I have 4 trees and the fruit on my trees are a round dark blue fig. All 4 of my trees are very fast growers. I will plant 2 in my orchard this Fall and see how it does in the Carolinas. Get Letizia! |

My Letizia gave me a good crop of very tasty figs this year before the coon invasion. It is definately one I will keep. |
My Letizia gave me a good crop of very tasty figs this year before the coon invasion. It is definately one I will keep. At the beginning of the season my trees got two applications of Super Bloom which I attribute to the amount of figs my trees set this year. Also Letizia is a very healthy vigorous grower for me growing in a heavily mulched #15 pot. No doubt the roots have grown out the drain holes by now.
~do you pinch buds on it ? if not try it if you want to see growth ~ |
