Dear fig growers,

We will have an informal field day/information session for fig growers on Saturday July 13th

Fig Field Day

Burden Research Center

4560 Essen Lane

Baton Rouge, La 70809

8am – noon

Saturday July 13, 2013

About twenty varieties and breeding selections of figs will be on display. Orchard tours will be given to discuss tree architecture and management. Most varieties should be at the peak of harvest. All the LSU AgCenter developed varieties will be available for sampling and evaluation. Many of the common varieties grown in the area will be available for sampling. There will be a discussion on orchard management to include training, pruning and weed control. A local culinary expert will be on hand to discuss ways of preparing figs and how figs pair with certain foods.

Some of the named Fig varieties in evaluation orchards:

Celeste, Hunt, Kadota, Alma, O’Rourke, Tiger, Champagne, LSU Purple, LSU Gold, Hardy Chicago, Smith

S.E. Brown Turkey, Texas everbearing, Magnolia, Marseille, Scotts Black

received this email from LSU .....Brian

CajunB,

Is there a fee or do you have to call to reserve a space.  I'm thinking about it.  4.5 hr drive for me.

Oh that's nothing. Just a 34 hour drive for me. 2408 miles of lonely road. Think of how many figs I could find on that trip there.

Baton Rogue airport is about 20 minutes and New Orleans airport is about 50 minutes

Ouch..$600-700 airfare plus hotel is a bit out of my comfort zone. Dang it, sounds like a great opportunity. I have all the varieties listed but 3; S.E. Brown Turkey, Texas everbearing, and Kadota.

If anyone is interested may be we should meet early maybe for breakfast before it starts. We'd need to figure it out though as we'd have to adjust our drive time. Also we could swap or give away some Summer cuttings. I think I will have some LSU Gold cuttings I could bring.

Brackishfigger, Brian and maybe Steve. Looking forward to it.

Dr. Charlie Johnson will be there. He has been involved in the LSU fig program for many years and has been the releasor of all recent (last thirty years or so) LSU figs.

I encourage all who can possibly make it to attend. You will probably learn more from this one event than you could learn in months if not years of studying figs. This is an opportunity to see years of fig research by experts.

For those of you who would come in from out of town, and locals, it would be great to head out as a group to Acme Oyster House or The Chimes or some other reasonably-priced beer-serving Louisiana-centric venue for lunch after.

What a figtastic event! Work will keep me away but you'all have a great time and take plenty of pictures and videos so we can all share.

Charles, thanks for the early invite.

Frank,

I will take plenty of pictures. I'd like to do some video but I'm not sure if I can get the equipment I'd need.

This will be my first year. How many people usually show up?

Will there be much time for Q&A with the experts?

I'm making plans to attend.  How can we (Darkman, CajunB, bobby) make contact at the event?  I plan on getting in early Friday evening, anyone available for dinner Friday night?

Steve that is great. I'd love dinner Friday night but I do not get off work until midnight Friday. I'm meeting a friend and Bobby around 0300 -0400 and then we are driving in. We'll probably exchange Cell numbers through PM's and figure it out.

Very glad you are going to make it. Not sure of what you may have if any but I was thinking that maybe we could swap or give some Summmer cuttings with each other. I should be able to bring some LSU Gold and Celeste cuttings.

Bobby I would like some Loquat seedlings.

Do you know the Blackberry variety?

I can't bring the Calamondin into the State of Florida!

It looks like we will be ending our vacation and driving home on Friday. That should allow me to go the the LSU day on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing some of y'all again and also meeting some new members.

I think lunch afterwards as brackishfigger suggested sounds great.

That is great Cajun. Please plan on joining us after the meet. We are hoping to get together at a restaurant across the street from Burden Research Center.

Gene glad to see you will make it. Looking forward to seeing you again.

Anyone else thinking about this you need to try and make it. If you can't start making plans for next year!!!!

Any early birds I will probably get there early and try to at least get acup of coffee near the meet. PM me if you'll get there early and want to join us. I'll leave Pensacola around 0200 Saturday but I can get the PM through Figs4fun website.

This will be a first for me also Brian, but looking forward to it. If all works out I'll be meeting darkman at the Waffle House at I-10 and Siegen Lane on the north side of the interstate. I'll try to be there around 7 to 7:30 AM. That will put us around 3 miles from the meeting place.

I'll probably get there around 0630 or so. I'll be waiting there at the Waffle House, 10439 Reiger Rd, Baton Rouge, LA 70809. We are meeting for lunch at Picadilly. It is 1/2 mile past the Burden Research Center on the same  side of the road. Everyone should be able to find something they want to eat there at reasonable prices and the dining room should be able to accomodate us even if everyone shows up.

Hoping everyone can attend! See ya Saturday.
