A family member picked this fig up at a Middle Tennessee Nursery about 15 years ago and gave to me.  At the time they told me it was Celeste now are telling me they thought it was a Brown Turkey or TN Mountain fig.

It sets a breba crop that always falls off.  The main crop ripens about middle of August. 

     

My Brown Turkey has similar leaves.....there is just so many varieties and differentials.....I am going to start a Fig Dictionary one day....we need the facts...LOL

To get better feedback on this post follow up with more pictures of the fruit  when it is ripe and a typical leaf. Give a view of the whole fig, the eye of the fig, and a picture of the fig cut in half lengthwise. It never hurts to include a quarter for size reference as well.  It could be a Celeste, but it could just as well be something else with some Malta heritage.

Does your Brown Turkey leaves look like these? Armando says they are similar to his. I used to have 2 BT's but they went away, they both had  FMV and there wasn't any leaf pattern that I could pin down as to what would be typical for that variety.

Ok I discovered my giant tree was ripening figs today about a couple weeks earlier than usual.

 

 

Going to make jam tonight.  Lots of ripe figs, glad to get them before the rain which is spoiling everything.

Thanks for the reply's and confirmation of ID.  That is what it was suppose to be but never too sure with all the mislabeling in the industry.  I plan to do some MAJOR clip clip this fall if anyone wants cuttings for postage.  It is a rather common fig but seems to be very hardy here in West KY in the ground and a southern exposure.  I have a couple planted out in the open field comes back every year besides this giant one next to the house.  They are tasty little figs. 

Noticed Durino Nursery gives Celeste several names  malta [ celeste / sugar fig / blue celeste / tennessee mountain fig / celestial / honey fig]  they all must be similiar or the same or of common descent.

It does look like Celeste, not to confuse the issue, but Southern Brown Turkey also looks like Celeste, only slightly larger and its has the reputation of not dropping figs. My first Southern Brown Turkey fig (in container) exploded a few days ago after 4 inches of rain, about 3 to 4 days before being ripe (it was still mildly sweet).
