This has always been a large fig, very sweet, mild flavor. It has always bee late in ripening, and seems to take a long time to ripen, after is starts swelling, and often spoils.

I know this fig as Long Neck Yellow, given to me by Edgar Valdivia who got it from George Emerich, the same source as yours.  Produces large figs here, not all that late.  Here is my photo from last month.

Harvey, Mine originated from Quail Gardens. I also have Yellow Long Neck, but cannot compare until it fruits. All the fruit i have seen of YLN is different. Time will tell.

That looks like heaven. When you say "late ripening," Jon, what hope is there for me in zone 6a?

Jon, I believe had confirmed with Edgar that either he or Steve Berger donated the fig to Quail Gardens.  The fig I gave you was named as Long Neck Yellow but you changed the name slightly.

Steve B calls it Yellow Long Neck. I have had Long Yellow for 10-15 years.

But what I gave you a few years ago was given with the name Long Neck Yellow.  Edgar's tree is pretty old, but I don't know how old.  He told me it's the only fig he's bothered to grow because he likes it the best.  He's got different taste preferences than Martin for sure!

Steve Berger confirmed today that he got his fig from Edgar about 3 years after Edgar got it from George and then about 6 years later Steve said he gave you a tree.  Edgar gave it to me as Long Neck Yellow and Steve calls it Yellow Long Neck.  Steve does not know of any fig at Quail Gardens but I will follow-up and ask Edgar about this again (and write it down this time).

Yes, I am mostly interested to not increase the confusion.  I have four bananas that are all labeled differently but which are probably all the same.

I just finished talking with Edgar on the phone and must now apologize because I've been the source of confusion.  While earlier this Edgar confirmed the name I've had on mine for 3-4 years earlier this year, tonight I asked him for the name (without telling him the name I'm using) and he said Yellow Long Neck! :)

I asked Edgar if he was familiar with Long Yellow at Quail Gardens and he is not familiar with it.

Sorry again....my tree will get a new label tomorrow.

Edit 9/2: Steve wrote again when I told him I was changing my name.  He said: "I believe the fig name started off as Long Neck Yellow and later was called Yellow Long Neck in an innocent change of the name - is it a long neck fig that's yellow, or a yellow fig that has a long neck?...  - what is the correct adjective? - hence the interchange of the names."

This looks like an old fig in my neighborhood that I keep an eye on. I have thought about taking cuttings (no one cares for the old tree), but it ripens so late. The past two years it has taste spoiled when they finally did ripen. But these are nice big figs, so I am temped to try and baby one at my place to see if it will do better. Any advice?

If you have an opportunity, you may try airlayering, ( a plastic bottle with potting soil mixture wrapped around a branch )...you probably already know this. On rooting cuttings, ask Aaron or Greenfig my Los Angeles friends...LOL   I have terrible odds on raising cuttings..LOL

Dan……. thanks for resurrecting this older post about “Long Yellow”.     This fig caught my attention after first posting at Jon’s Fig Fiesta in September.   I was impressed enough at the tasting event that, it promptly gained a spot on my wanted list for this year.  

Jon mentions origin of his Long Yellow being Quail Gardens.   Hummm…. I live only a few miles from the Garden (now San Diego Botanic Garden) and long overdue for a visit.  Maybe with clippers in hand …….. :-)

This is probably one of my favorite  figs. This fig was the reason I got into figs. I don't remember what nursery I was at but I saw a pretty long yellow fig hanging on the tree, picked it and popped it in my mouth. WOW was it sweet!  My tree had been a real good grower. Very thick leaves and fast growing.

is it me or the length of the neck on harvey's and jon's long neck yellow is different? looks like harvey's is much longer. tho the pulp and the flesh looks same. 

Just a note on Yellow Long Neck. I saw some green today. It has survived the winter for me here in north-central Ohio in a one gallon pot in an unheated garage where others did not survive.
