It was so cold...I had to defrost my frozen potting material before I could plant my new bare root trees!!!
My Promix and pine bark fines spent the winter in the garage, and on this particular day they were frozen solid. The needed a couple of hours to thaw out in front of the fire before I could get enough material to get the job done! Jim

It was so cold... one day I lifted the top pot out of a SWP, and the water from the reservoir was attached to the wick as a frozen disk.

Hey Jim,
I feel your pain. I had to up-pot a few of my rooted cuttings and had to microwave my potting soil in small batches to thaw enough of it out to do the job.

Chicago tied it's own record for 3rd coldest winter since late 1800s . To date there were 23 days of below zero temps with 25 being the record.
Being somewhat away from the lake our area smashed that record. Total snowfall over 70 inches with 2-4 coming down as this is being typed.

I am SO ready for spring. We have set a number of records ourselves with many days in the low single digits. Been a NASTY winter and we dont have near the stuff Martin and others do.

trees are fine, but i didn't enjoy the winter too much. even if the weather is in 10s, it seems trees are fine in the garage. last two days low has gone down to upper 10s, no issue with new leaves on the trees in garage.

The coldest in the last 20 to 25 years and may be longer. Many days for weeks uninterrupted temperatures of -10F over day& night. Very discouraging when the furnace oil bill comes (converting to gas in spring). The technician just came and left after bleeding the line between the tank and furnace to remove the air after the tank got unexpectedly empty before the refill (not true really, should have been expected). I hope the oil furnace lasts 50 more days until conversion. It is turning on and off erratically after the technician left. I just hope that tonight forecast of -8F is the real last deep cold here and let Martin send all the hot air this way north in return fot what we sent down this winter, a sunny warm spring and good warm (or hot !?) summer for the figs....

It was so cold that; - the flashers in New York were only describing themselves...JC - actually saw a Politician with his hands in his own pockets - I saw a dog stuck to a telephone pole ..JC - a cab driver was saying something to a pedestrian and his middle finger froze ..JC - my nose is running to Bermuda - Justin Bieber actually pulled up his pants
..sorry couldn't resist.

Also it -8F is (so close to spring time. This winter may not have the short deepest dip in temperature but it had continuous long stretch of deep freeze temperatures hovering between -25C to -20C during day and night. This makes me afraid of the next winter! The thoughts of summer with figs will make it more fun. I hope it does.

Had two nights of -15F and too many nights between -5F and -12F with highs of 0F to 5F.
If any of my covered trees make it through those temps with little die back I'll be lucky. Chances are everything will be starting from below ground level.

Pretty funny, Joe. I could hear those rim shots all the way down here.
Local paper reported that it was the 32 coldest winter in 119 years! Given that it was cold, that means on average, it's a cold winter every four years. I am not that excited.
Look at what USDA agricultural zones means: it gets that cold on the average once every twenty years.

Past Tuesday Night it was 2F,and ,we had ,extremes of -3F,in January. Cold periods were lasting for weeks in a row. I expect my inground fig trees to be ,pruned ,"naturally",close to soil level in the Spring,Winter protected or not. Only the hardiest one will have live trunks starting in the Spring, seems like ,this year. We should ,come back and ,pinpoint ,the results in May.

So cold this season 91% of the Great Lakes according to NOAA are froze solid. There saying the snow melt and the feeding of the frozen tributaries will help the low levels they have been seeing if only a temp fix.

Well guys, I really don't understand what you're speaking about. We here got no snow -so far ?!?- this winter, and lowest night temp was -12°C ... But I already payed the bill in February 2012, so I'm empty pockets for now ... I'll let you have the bill this year :) .

We just got 8 inches of snow last night - school closed and I'll be teleworking today. Tweaked my back root pruning my VdB yesterday and now it is time to shovel snow. Figs are nowhere close to breaking dormancy.

Yeah! I was just scraping ice off the windshield so my wife could go to work. Our last frost date is May 10th. It's a long way from over.

The temperatures in Silver Spring, Maryland were very cold in a few nights in January 2014. The polar vortex delivered the coldest day in decades to my area. One night I was driving home, I saw outdoor temperature thermometer on my car dashboard at 2°F degree. The wind temperatures were in the -4°F or -5°F degree. Thanks for sharing.
Best, Tam

OttawanZ5 I used to live in Ottawa area but moved to balmy southern Ontario. Unfortunately it looks like the cold followed me this year. It was -15C last night. But not to worry spring is in the air.
