First fig off this tree this year and it is a big improvement over last year. Even with a lot of rain it is sweet but not overly so. Now trying to describe the flavor is more than I can do on this one. I can only say the same as I did last  year and the same that Pete says. "It's not just simply sweet. there is something more to it.. but not sure how to put it. good fig." It is a 8.5

Hi Mike, Did KB ripen about the same time last year? Also, which variety ripened the first main crop fruit for you? When did it ripen? I'm glad to see you gave KB a high rating. There seems to be some controversy over the quality of this fig. I tried to root some cuttings this year, but the gnats got them. I am seeking more information about KB and other figs which may ripen around the same time before pestering someone for cuttings. Thanks.

Looks excellent!! We should come up with terms like they have for wine to describe different figs..

Correct me if I am wrong but does someone else see something different here? I don't think this fig is Kathleen's Black. Just from the photos is looks very similar to Sal's Corleone and those figs with similar synonyms.

James, it was within one week of last year. My first fig to ripen a main crop this year was Lyndhurst White and first dark fig was Macool.

Leon, this fig does slightly resemble my Sals Corleone. Additionally the taste are quiet different to me. You may want to ask Herman what he thinks since this fig came from him.

i only had two KB this yr. after the winter root pruning, it didn't put on the figs. same with Paradiso and VdB. but it was really good this yr.

Thanks for posting Mike - looks delicious.  Leon, I agree that typically the figs are more elongated (pyriform?), at least on my KB bush.  Then again, there is variation from fig to fig on the same bush.  From what I keep hearing about Kathleen's Black, it is an investment of several years to trial this one.  This is the 2nd season I've had one in the ground and I won't get figs; however, it pretty much froze to the ground last winter.  After a summer's growth it is bigger than ever though.  Maybe next year I'll finally taste this one?

You make a good point Steve. Perhaps I jumped the gun Mike and I apologize. This one seems so round and the the eye is quite large. I also have a KB but it did not produce any figs this year. I would like to see some photos of the leaves if you can post some time. Thanks.

Mike, my KB leaves have longer fingers with somewhat serrated edges.  Mine came from Pete (Bullet08) who got it from Gene Hosey.  I'll try to post images of them tonight.  I'll be interested to hear what others think.

Steve, I have seen several pics of others trees and there have been differences in each. It will be interesting to find out from
who ever the expert on this one is what it suppose to look like. I hope Herman will chime in since he provided mine.

Here are pics of the leaves and partially developed fruit from mine.  It seems that mine is different from yours Mike, unless there is a huge environmental difference on the morphology of fruit and leaves which seems unlikely.  Bullet08, are you out there?  Or anyone else that grows KB?

Steve, I have two KB from two different sources and they look like yours.

Mike, that looks like Sal's Corleone, aka Weeping Fg. My KB is long, has cracks and is jet black.

I let this one ripe to the very max. It is much darker than the first one much darker and smaller than my Sals Corleone. It was also sweeter and
my wife said it had the flavor of peach to her. I am still not sure what it taste like  or what it suppose to taste like. What ever it turns out to
be it is good. LOL

Mike, Looks like a keeper. Maybe it will be better than a KB.

My KB (from Pete) had fruit in its second year. They were dark (black) and elongated, ..and very good. They were one of the first figs to ripen this year. The leaves on mine are not as deeply cut as are Rewton/Steve's.

Here are my Kathleens Black leaves for comparison. I have not had any figs from this tree yet so I cannot compare the fruit.

That doesn't look like a Kathleen's Black, Mike.  KB has leaves that look like the bottom right leaf leon_edmond shows.  In addition, KB is pyriform fruit, and yours are definitely not so.  You've got something that would fit among the Sal's Corleone family of sicilian figs.  Say, like Aldo, or Weeping.  It could be immaturity.  KB and Noire de Caromb tend to have matte leaves with very stick out thumbs going back, like that leaf I mentioned.  I see hints of that tendency in your plant, but nothing for sure.

The fig in this topic is not Kathleen Black,but Sal Corleone.
If I sent that fig to Mike as Kathleen Black,then i really blew this one up.
