This is the very first fig off of my Malta Black.  This one was rooted in winter of 2013 and planted in the ground this past May.  I purposely planted this one in a part of the yard that gets only partial sun (5-6 hours per day) as others have said it will do well in part sun/shade.  It's a small fig but I was very pleased with the flavor: sweet, rich, with just a small amount of seed crunch.

It's a nice fig Steve. I think underrated or at least under-discussed.

Looking good Steve! I'm hoping to taste mine soon, just starting to get the tiniest hint of color on a few here. It seem to be a very productive tree with a fig at every leaf of every branch except the first leaf.

Yes, for me the lack of full sun doesn't seem to affect its productivity, though it could affect the flavor I suppose.  I wonder if the figs get larger as the tree gains maturity?

Steve, it is looking good and yes the fruit should get a little larger. Mine are generally a medium size. Here is a pic of mine but sorry
I did not put a quarter with them.

Hi Rewton

I did exactly the same as you, mine are ripening this week, 5-6 hours of sun, and yes, mine too are on the small size. 2nd year plant, last year it was in a container in full sun, the figs were neglibly larger last year.

Thanks Steve for sharing your photos and information, nice healthy plant and plants in the background. I have a couple of young Malta Blacks, so I have something to look forward to next year.

This was the best tasting fig I had this year. Mine were small as well but packed with flavor! Many more to taste next season but Malta Black is definately on the keepers list along with Improved Celeste. That one was delicious as well!
