Hello, has anyone tried growing plants using seeds harvested from dried figs?

I found a teeny tiny bit of dried fig in a treat box I received over holidays and have gathered a few seeds. The dried fig was delicious and thought I would try growing a few seeds.

I have potted them yesterday. Hoping they are viable. I know this is a wild experiment and the outcome may not be what I expect, but thought I will give it a shot.

Would love to hear from you o this subject.

Thanks.

Mohan B,

Welcome to the forum.
Next time you decide to plant some fig seeds, to find if they are fertile, do as follows:

Clean/wash  the seeds you have and drop them on a transparent glass with clean water.
The seeds sinking to the bottom of the glass are fertile, have a live kernel and will generate a seedling!
Floating seeds, are hollow, no kernel,.. no good

Dried Calimyrna figs from California DO have good seeds!

Good luck

Hi sbmohan,
If you do it for fun, just go ahead and let us know.
Raising a seedling is a challenge and a patience test, but a funny experience IMO.
If you're looking for production, let that on the side, and buy a tree (small or big) or a cutting and raise it . At least, you'll know that the tree will fruit, and what to expect from the fruits.
From seeds, you' won't know what to expect and the answer will come in a matter of years - 3 to 5 in our Zone 7 ... That is if one doesn't loose or kill the tree before :) .
