Hi F4F members!

I am new to the forms and wanted to quickly introduce myself to the community. My grandfather, who is now 98 years old, showed me what it was like to grow a plant from seed at age three. I am not the most patient person in the world, whatever patience and nurturing attributes I have, I give the credit to my grandfather. Growing up, I would plant all sorts of rarer/non-commercially available fruit trees in my parent’s yard. My mom didn’t really mind, especially when the fruit season rolled around.

My wife and I love all types of fruits and figs are one of her favorite! One of the first things we discussed and had in common on our first date were about our love for all types of fruits. Fast forward ten years, of which four of those years were in apartments, we purchased a home in October of last year. Now that we have our own place with a decent sized yard, approximately 3000 square feet, I feel that it is time to restart.

I have a two year old son and another on the way - I am extremely passionate about passing on the love of gardening to them. I grew up eating Black Mission figs from the yard and had no idea until recently on the sheer number of varieties available. All the pictures and reviews from members on here are amazing.

As you can see in my signature, I have started a small collection. They’re currently still rooting but I have great expectations! If anyone wants to donate or sell any interest verities of cutting, please message me!

Bottom-line, I love what I have seen from this community and I look forward to being a part of it & contribute to it.

Best Regards,
Jeffrey and Anna

Anna and Jeff welcome to the forum. Lots of new members of late. Good thing we are surrounded by veterans. Nice collection started, what rooting method are you using?

Hi Dave!

Thank you for the warm welcome. We are taking 5-7" cuttings, lightly scoring the bottom 1/2", dipping in clonex, and putting them in sphagnum moss shoebox. So far, we have 100% rooting success. I just transferred some of the rooted figs into a 50/50 perlite and vermiculite mix.

Prior to doing this, I had them using the moist paper method but it developed mold. Quickly did a soak in actinovate, then washed with diluted clorox and antibacterial soap. Luckily, the mold did not return.

It seems like this method has been tried and true. I will probably experiment more once these grow to a size where cuttings are available. What has been your experience with rooting?

Jeffrey and Anna, you'll need a bigger yard! Or you will want one after you catch fig fever! Welcome!

Thank you! Yes, I would very much like a larger yard. The way Orange County real estate is trending, unless I somehow come into millions (fingers crossed). This will have to do for now! :)

You may think about reducing the size of your house to give more yard space!! Haha

This is our current strategy for maximizing space :)

Orange County is almost the best for figs.  Maybe a little too wet.

Jeffrey and Anna,
Welcome to THE forum, where it all happens :)

It's definitely a great change from apartments to a house with land...
I can't imagine my kids in any other setup, apartment? ugh, human cages.

You are in the right state, right forum and right time Jeffrey :)
It's a time for giving all the way to early Spring.
Good luck :)
