There are a couple thousand grape cultivars in the Davis GRIN holdings known only by accession number. Visiting the Wolfskill orchard with pad and pencil during fruiting seasons is the only way to learn about them. This one is a seedless golden table grape which due to its parentage I have nicknamed Gold Manukka. It is sweet and fruity. |

I spent many hours a few years ago researching wine grapes that grow in hot windy areas around the world, and I ordered many unusual varieties from UC Davis because at that time we lived in the hot low desert where miles of commercial table grape vineyards exist. Coachella Valley. They grow table grapes there mainly because it costs too much to keep the wine cool enough for aging. Learned that the hard way. I also learned that living on a golf course is not good for the grapes. They water too much which causes humidity and makes the grapes get fungus. |
