My first in ground fig, I bought this Black Jack last summer and so looking forward to it's figs. I think it liked the spot. I first transplanted it on 3/11/15 and now it has few new branches. Only gonna let it grow 8ft wide.

Looking good!  I'd be interested in seeing its progression at the end of the season.

Do you cut any suckers off, or have you had this problem?

Mine started suckering like crazy when I laid it horizontal.

Hey Don. It has about 3 little suckers that just popped out within the last week, I might just let them grow enough to airlayer a couple to gift out.

Right now I'm watering by hand till I set up an irrigation system. It's a row of 6 trees along that wall. I dug around the base of the tree to give it a lower water level before I covered them with the bark.

This is super cool! I have all my figs indoors so haven't espaliered any so far. I'm currently working on an espalier for my pomegranate tree. Thanks for sharing !!!

A little update... 2 months later, lots of growth. Suckers like crazy but cut them down to only 3. Lots of figlets, should have my first ripe fig in a few days. Going to start the airlayer process on the suckers on Monday.

Hey everyone... haven't been on in a while and thought I'd check in...
Anyways, will be pruning my Black Jack in a couple days and was wondering if anyone would like some cuttings...
Will probably have only enough for a few packages of 3-4 cuttings...
Gifted of course just asking for the shipping, $5 should cover it...
PM me if interested...

Sounds like a great opportunity for those who don't have Black Jack.

Glad you posted to this thread as it is getting me to reconsider espaliering some of my figs -- might work well to plant them along some of my hogwire fence.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Beautiful tree, Elfaranch! Nice way to trim it. I need to read about this technique. My mom has a Black Jack about 3-4 yrs old (I think). It is a small tree. I have only had two figs from it but they are some deliscious figs!

Here we go again!!! Decided to really give it a good pruning for a fresh start this season and to pick main vertical permanent branches... Even tried a bud graft but it didn't take... Top pic was taken late Nov 15' and bottom pic was taken yesterday...

Simon,

Are you going to create a second row of laterals?  I've seen some done with 4 rows, that could be a lot of trimming to keep it shaped. I'm considering an espalier to make use of my limited growing space.

Nice looking tree you have.

3 DOWN, 3 still available...

I was thinking about it Conrad but I now in it's 2nd growing season in this spot, we had way more figs then we could eat so I will just keep it at one row...
I really let it grow wild this year since my parents were going to be in town and that meant other family also visiting so I wanted the extra figs but I learned a few things doing this...

1. Only a few horizontal branches (8-10)
2. Pinch sooner (7th or 8th leaf)
3. Longer periods between watering (had some splitting in late July)

This'll keep it cleaner looking and easier to manage...
And besides, I'll be getting extra figs next year from my other trees...

There's a topic on it now, something about the site running out of space... I'm the last one you should ask about techy stuff, haha...
