I bought a two year old Col de dame blanc fig tree which is doing very well and has grown about a foot this season. Since it was costly tree I would like to take a cutting or maybe try air layering. Someone mentioned a fig tree should first bear figs before taking cuttings but I am curious if this is true. Can I take a cutting from this young tree? Thanks

Air layer. Cut root green wood easily

Riche what is your method with fresh green wood? Mine is directly into a pot with normal pottung mix then covered with plastic bag until roots.

i also find taking 1 inch cuttings just the top bud roots so easy. Easyest way i have ever done. Try it one inch top cut put in soil jeep out of sun water every other day just on bud.just a dab of water. Three days you have growth. Give it ago.

For nearly guaranteed results, Airlayer.  

But, I have had great results from "green" cuttings, especially if the cutting has a little brown wood as well.

I treat mine like dormant cuttings.  I put cutting with all but tip leaves removed into cups of perlite, and then into clear bin to control humidity level.

Is this really possible?  If it's only 1 inch long do you completely bury the bud?  I've pinched several figs to encourage fruiting.  I've just thrown away what I've pinched.  You telling me I could've rooted those?

So I can just cut off an inch or so at top as long as bud is included and put that small tip in perlite or soil, put humidity bag over it and water and place in shade? So when everyone talks about "pinching" they can root those little cuttings? I am new and just want to make another plant. Thanks

If it is vigorously growing, you can try an air layer.  I have not tried rooting a green cutting, but Don's method sounds good.

I 've done it with green stems of 15cm / 5'' of length. They rooted well and grew correctly, but I'm in Zone7 .
The wood did not harden, especially the one that rooted, and the frost got the whole stem and those trees did rot and die.
One is coming back from the roots though and lost 2 . So it can be done, but green wood is not the easiest material.
Of course with a greenhouse for the winter time, that drawback would just vanish .
