In the next 3-4 weeks or so I will be trimming my figs. I have many Cold Hardy (uncovered zone 6) Unknown varieties that I don't have much info on, but they do need to be trimmed to get them into the greenhouse for the winter. These are all varieties I have collected in the NJ/NY area. I know I have a bunch of Mt Aetna types, Yellow Greek, Purple Portugese, many Italian varieties, Brunswick types, Celeste types, and many others. I'm just wondering if anyone would be interested in an assorted package of a few varieties. This way I can prune and package at the same time. Here's what I'm thinking. 6 varieties, 3 cuttings per variety, $25 including shipping. If interested just PM me. If you would prefer to trade let me know. |

Someday. Someday when I own 10+ acres of land, I'll have a dang orchard of all these unknowns (and knowns, for that matter). Today is not that day. Alas. |

Aaron you have a good deal, they sound great, wish I didn't have too many trees already, I would jump at the chance. Everyone should jump at the chance of getting this deal, especially the newbies. I can't imagine going on a fig hunt and finding so many winners. Good going, good deal. |

I stopped at another house today. That had 2 unknown varieties. The owners were Palestinian (I think). They had no history on the figs except that they came from their brother in law. 2 more mysteries. One was purple, the other yellow. I guess we'll find out in a year or two. |

Thanks Mohan....do you know how weak I am?.....I've tried to be strong but one more post like yours......I'll hold up the white flag and put my name on the list! Seriously, a name of a fig does not make the fig. A great tasting unknown is much more rewarding than a named fancy looking fig with average taste. Good post Mohan, it should help others with their decision. |

Oooh, that sounds great, ADelmanto! I ride the train to and from work daily and on my way I see sooooo many fig trees! I finally got off the train at one of the stations and took some cuttings from a tree that is behind a restaurant but on the street side (didn't need permission). I think they are rotting...but I will go get another two cuttings this weekend! I have seen the figs every summer and they look deliciously purple. Anyway, I want to do what you do...lol |

I'd be down for a package. Quick question though. When you are trying to propogate your cuttings are you suppose to put them in a cold area or in a warm area? |

Store cuttings in the crisper of the fridge till spring and when it warms up in the spring start your cuttings. |

I collected air layers yesterday. They are U. Natalina BI and U. Italian Yellow BI. I have these as cuttings, but if you prefer, I could send you these. Here's what I'm thinking, I could send you one or both of these along with the 6 other varieties. These air layers are an average of 5-6' tall so shipping is an issue. To add 1 variety would be an additional $20, to add both varieties would be an additional $40. PM me if interested. |

I took cuttings from over 20 varieties over the last couple of weeks, with more varieties that still need to be pruned. I actually have more cuttings than I thought I would have. If you are thinking about this offer, jump on board. I will start shipping out this week. I'm in zone 6. All of my varieties are winter Hardy. Some suffered from the last two winters, but came back from the base. I would recommended planting in a pot for 1-2 years before planting in the ground. Wrap in winter to avoid winter damage. PM me if interested. |
