Just curious if anyone else's figs are still in winter storage ??? 

Mine still are they are fully leaved out and all tangled together LOL Last year I thought that it was a safe to take them out and Bam they got hit with a light frost and screwed up all the leaves which isn't the end of the world but set everything back and I don't want this to happen again this year


 

My trees have been out for a few weeks already and have no where near the amount of leaves you have....

Your winter-storage looks like a greenhouse.
It looks like your trees could spend the whole season there. It is amazing how good looking the leaves are.
Mine are all outside since mid-March or April - The roof of my garden house does not allow for enough light to reach the trees.

Trees look great and you should be fine bringing them outside now. Many of the trees ( maples, oak, birch) are already leafing out so it looks like spring is finally here. I'd expect the same for you in CT.

Dave, I have had mine out for a week now. I am no where near as leafed out as yours though. Nice set up. Do you have heat during the winter?

I have over 40 fully leafed out figs in 7 gallon and 18 gallon pots that were over taking the sunroom and required way to much attention. I placed them outside this week after looking at the extended forecast. However I did shuffle them in an out over the past few weeks to get them acclimated to direct sun.

This is the 2nd year that I had this greenhouse the mistake that I made was not keeping it wide open months ago it got too warm in there too early and everything opened faster than I wanted them too I did have it open until I found out that a squirrel got in there  and dug into about 10 of the pots I don't mean scratching the surface I mean dug down half way into the pot I have to make some screens for the doors for next year

Yeah I suppose I could call it a greenhouse I just don't have glass on the back wall because it is right up against my neighbors fence

nope there is no heat in there and everything survived nicely a couple minor tips died back here and there but nothing to big to speak of

as you can see in the picture once I take these out theres no putting them back it's going to be allot of fun untangling these without knocking off leaves and fruit 

Maybe I need an AC in there LOL

~[/QUOTE]~i also zone 6b in pa. this winter i have decided to only set ventilated barrels or cans on my trees in winter after prunning back to fit cover,no more insulation,leaves ,wood chips etc. mine rotted way back last two winters because of mold,so i have decided i would rather them freeze than rot~

Nice, I'm having some squirrel issues myself. That is a nice set up.

No tarp Chuck it has a corrugated fiberglass roof on it .... when they leaf out in the greenhouse like mine there more delicate then if I brought them out before they opened

Dave, a couple questions/thoughts:

1.  What percentage of the sunlight do you think gets through that roof?
2.  When you bring them out after they've leafed out so much, do they get sunburn?  If not, I'd say it's a great way to get a headstart on the season.
3.  When I start my tomatoes indoors, I turn a fan on them to simulate wind for a couple weeks before I set them out.  Maybe you'd want to do this for your fig trees? 

Excellent setup. I have squirrels hiding acorns in my pots and forgetting them until they sprout.

I didn't have any trouble with sunburn last year when I brought them out I'll see how this year goes 

I thought about putting a fan in there but when I open the front and back door it gets a nice breeze through there 

The only adjustment I need to make is to keep the doors opened earlier so it is not as quite as hot in there to slow them down from breaking bud as early as they did

What a lovely setup!  I'm hoping to have something like that next year, and I'm glad to hear that you don't have any problems with sunburn when they come out.

All of my figs are out and have been for a while.  They were slow to open, but now they're racing to push out leaves and brebas.

Hi Dave,

Mike in Wallingford. Wednesday and Thursday night 45 degree low. I believe cool but not as cold next week. After that we are supposed to go above normal temperatures for awhile.

Beautiful trees. The natural light like you have should help to keep the leaves from dropping going outside.

I've noticed it is a pain going from fluorescents to natural light. Live and learn.

My plants are much smaller, but were only inside three nights the last two weeks and doing great, @100 gallon pots.

Hey Mike, This weekend is it everything is going out I can't deal with this crazy weather anymore I'm sure they must feel like they are in paradise compared to where I used to keep them  

Is that a typically error "100 gallon pots" ?

Took all mine out about a month ago with wind protection here in Norwalk CT. We've had some usually cold weather spurts since then but the figs all look good and are starting to leaf out nicely. Come on summer!

Mine have been out a couple of weeks now down in south east Ct. Most are beginning to leaf out nicely, but a few are still sleeping. I feel as though we really have a late start this year.

I dropped the ball this year kept it too hot too early in the greenhouse one good thing I see a ton of figs LOL
