I have several figs in ground and they have grown to about waist high and really healthy.  What do I need to do to take them through winter? This is their first year.  I also have a fig tree bought at lowe's and I'm pretty certain it is a couple maybe years old and at present has several figs.  How do I winter it and it is also in ground.

The first year, I tried covering my trees with foam pipe insulation, but still had some damaged branch tips.
Covering around the base with about 6" of Texas hardwood mulch will probably do it. They sell them at Home Depot for $3.37 per bag. Nowadays I don't protect any of my trees included the potted ones. They all stay outside. I have lost more trees to mice rather than anything else.

In 8b you would probably have minimal dieback, I have heard of people putting an upside down trashcan over their figs to protect against windchill however

I'm in zone 8b too, and this is what I plan to do for some small citrus trees that I planted in the ground this spring.
