Subject: Rooting cuttings Replies: 12

Any method where the cutting gets both air and moisture will work.  The only problem with moss is that if the roots start getting the microscopic hairs they'll stick to the moss. When you up pot the cuttings the moss will hold too much water and drown the roots.

If you use a perlite method you have to rinse or winnow all of the dust out before you use it or the dust will fill the air spaces between the bigger chunks.  The dust will hold water and drown the cuttings.  If you get very moist air to a cutting in good condition it will usually root.

It doesn't matter what you do.  They'll eventually fall off.  Ripening is unlikely.  CdDG is a common fig.  Richie has a whole different climate and they're still not likely to ripen after seeing 31 degrees.  But in his area I'd leave them on, too.  I'd cover the tree with christmas lights, a blanket and a tarp for cold spells, and the same minus the blanket any time the temperature is supposed to be under 75.

Subject: Need Cuttings for Fig Class Replies: 7
Posted By: rcantor Views: 269

It's that time of year again.  I'll be teaching my semi-annual fig class in early spring and I'll need cuttings to give the students to root.

A big shout of thanks to all who donated last year.

I have cuttings from my Hardy Chicago to give out but if anyone wants to donate cuttings to the cause I'd be delighted to use them.  To be practical I'd need 10 - 40 cuttings of a variety suitable for a first timer to root. Cuttings should be between 1/4 and 3/4" in diameter with over 3/8" preferred.  They should be at least 6" long although 8" - 10" is preferred.

Last year 90% of the cuttings took root.

Thanks to anyone who wants to help.

If that happens try to root as cuttings all the wood that still has bark.

Fig cuttings only produce branches at their nodes and there are limited nodes.  If you have leaves you want them under light so they can produce food for the cutting.  You can shade the root area but if you don't light the leaves the branches will be weak and the cutting won't have as much available nutrients.  If there are no roots the leaves may need additional moisture.  You'll have to see how they respond.  The less you intervene the better.  Be sure your potting media isn't soaked and doesn't have any standing water.  Perlite dust will hold water in what should be air spaces and drown your cuttings or allow anaerobic (bad) bacteria to grow.

If you want to do it then do it  :)  The further apart you plant the trunks the longer the braid will stay visible.  Eventually they'll merge.  Plus, some may send up branches from buried wood and you'll have to decide what to do then.

I'm not at all worried about the delay.  You have to remember that if a 1 yr old tree produces 4 clones in 4 months then 5 trees will produce 20 clones in that same time.  In the mean time the older trees will produce 8 or more clones in 3 months. So the number of trees produced would rise exponentially if they all produced at the same rate but the larger root mass of the older trees will make them produce even faster.   Catching up and then exceeding demand is pretty much inevitable.

I think you'd be better off covering the whole plant with a clear plastic bag if you want to ripen figs.  But it will delay dormancy so I'm not sure it's a good idea.  For the cup to work all the processes necessary to ripen the fig would have to happen inside the fig.  Since picked figs don't ripen I think it's unlikely that warming the fig on a cool plant will help a significant amount.

The original use was to allow the fig to dry on the tree in a wet climate, not ripen the fig.

I think you're gonna need more light.  :)  The color is very light green and as it grows leaves will shade other leaves and the top and bottom leaves won't fit in the same beam.  Eventually the width of the plant will outgrow a single beam, too.  Don't give it much nitrogen :)

All the Chicagos are correctly named Hardy Chicago.  Higo means fig.  Improved Celeste is not the same as Celeste and both are probably  different than Blue Celeste depending on where you got your Blue Celeste from.  If you search, "improved celeste lobes" you'll find out how to tell the difference between Improved Celeste and Celeste.

What a wonderful story!  Coop has the best fig/people stories and they just keep building.  Fred, it's great that you're determined to be a good father.  The placenta that fed your daughter will feed the fig tree now that she's out grown it and eventually the tree will feed her again.  Who knows where she'll take the story once it's her turn to carry it?

It is a beautiful fig!.

Jo, it's probably not a good idea to feed your fig in the fall and what you do feed it at other times *may* be related to why you don't get fruit.  Why don't you start a new thread about your fig so we don't hijack this one.

I suggest that you burn them so the eggs never hatch.  If you throw them out the eggs will hatch in your landfill and you may have a colony spreading in your area.

Subject: Do I Need Them All? Replies: 11

You need all of them all.  White, black, red, yellow, green, grey, rimada and no color names.  2 or 3 back ups of each.  I hope you can find a good deal on 25 acres and 4 or 5 120' greenhouses.

It's actually a good idea to look up flavor groups and ripening times and be guided by those.  The best in one area may not be the best in another so trials in your conditions are important.  If you have winter highs in the 60s Hardy Chicago and Salem Dark will ripen figs for you all winter long but you may have a different favorite in mid summer.

I'm known for smoking my chickens by the flock for big parties.  I'll smoke or grill almost anything edible. (Not ice cream) I've used the generic R2D2 style ($29 at the end of the season) and a char griller ($59 - 129 at the end of the season).  For bang for the buck those are the 2 best smokers around.  Others have some improvements but at a much higher cost.  The Char griller has more room for a bigger turkey than anything I've seen.

The thing to consider is if you can provide enough light and care for the plant to thrive for all the months of the winter.  As was mentioned, cuttings will out grow the fluorescent light systems in 1 - 2 months.  I imagine it would be the same for an LED as well.  Here's a list of some good HID systems that are inexpensive.  Only a 1000 W HID or other system with over 100,000 Lm provides enough light for the height your plants are going to get after a few months.

I have a friend in St Louis who's importing the cutting globes.  He says he has great results.  He has a few figs that he's done and it's worked well.  He sells them cheaply.  The seem small to me but if they work that's all that counts.

Subject: root initials or mold? Replies: 10

Sorry, guys.  Those are lenticels.  They appear in low oxygen environments and help the plant do a better job of extracting oxygen from the environment.  Sometimes root initials will poke through the center of the lenticels, especially the fluffy ones, but that may or may not happen.

Search on lenticel to see some other examples.

As for me and my figs, I'd rather they wait until May after the last frost date.  Mail can sit in the truck for days with no climate control as has been mentioned.

The flat part goes down.  The 'tail' goes up.  They need large containers or they won't produce flowers and they'll get weaker every year.  I hope the nitrogen isn't too high.  That can inhibit flowering as well.  Best of luck with them.

I can't tell you what it is but fig shapes can vary during the season so it's not really a reliable indicator.  That irregular shape happens randomly to a lot of figs.

I protect mine with organza bags.  When it's time to pick I write the name of the fig on some paper, tear that off and put it in the bag with the fig.

And just recently I've stopped doing this.  It's become very burdensome.  I've gone back to just enjoying my figs  :)
