Miracle grow is great but use it at houseplant strength.  Even better is Osmocote plus because it has micronutrients that plants need.

You generally want to leave the green layer intact, but figs are tougher than you are.  'Bring it!'  If you get air and moisture to it you will do fine.

Subject: Fuzzy white stuff around each bud on branch. Replies: 25

A close up of some bud areas would help.  It's usually the leaf scars that get mold, not the buds.  White fuzzy stuff can be mold or mealy bugs.  Spraying with full strength rubbing alcohol will kill both.  I would still spray because either way there can be eggs or mold left behind.  I'm just guessing because I can't blow the photo up enough to get a good look but I think you have some buds that are developing.

Also, figs will not sprout from the roots.  They will sprout from underground nodes, if any,  and they may be able to turn some primitive cells into meristem tissue, but roots will live forever without sending up shoots.

You have to look at where the stem came from - brown wood or new green growth.  I can't see that in the photo.

Subject: Is it ok to leave fig trees outside now? Replies: 3

No one can make that decision for you.  Are they leafed out yet?  Looking at the long range forecasts in your area do you think it'll get near 34?  Can you move them back in if you need to?

If they're not leafed out they can go right to full sun as long as you think it wont freeze or you can put them back in if there's a risk.  If they are leafed out you have to start in shade but you want to get them used to sun ASAP.  Just know that a light frost will kill any green growth.

Welcome to the forum!

Subject: how long should i be leaving my grow light on ? Replies: 18

Only the youngest of plants can get by on 10 hrs/day.  I generally give 12-14.  Once you get to 16 they grow so fast that you have to water them daily.  If you're like me and miss a day they'll wilt and drop leaves and they'll be worse off than they were at 12 hrs/day.  In LA you can put them out now so it may not matter how fast they grow and 24 hrs/day of light is fine if you can keep up with the watering or have the space to put them in pots big enough so they don't have to be watered daily.  Here, they still can't go out so I don't want them out growing their space and lighting capacity.  The bigger the plants get the more they shade themselves and others.   You end up needing more light to compensate.

Here's what plants produce when under 24 hrs/day of sunlight.

Welcome!  A greenhouse or hoop house helps a lot.  You can get an early start on the season and ripen the last stragglers in there.

Only in zone 10...  I'm pretty jealous   :)   I pull a panache out of my garage in Feb in hopes of getting fruit.  It turns out all of the above ground stems had died but it came back from underground nodes. Just a week ago my dogs ran over it and broke off most of the stems.  Sigh.  This is up there as one of the best fruits.  You'll love it!

Subject: Do You Need Growning Pots? Replies: 7

I'd say keep calling around.  The nurseries here have to pay to get their pots hauled off so they save $$ and generate good will by giving them away free.  It was the same when I was living in OR.  Over the course of the growing season I could easily get 1000 3 and 5 gal pots.  I couldn't begin to guess how many thousands of 1 gal pots were available.  I've picked up 100 in a day for friends and left 3-5 times that many behind.  It may be different in smaller towns where there's less competition or with smaller operations that find it cost effective to wash and reuse pots.

1/2" roots are not mature enough to handle soil without a lot of air.  I'd go to mostly perlite and maybe 5-10% peat moss.  Cut away as much of the moss as possible - it holds enough water to drown a baby root.

Sybil is a great person and the cause is good.  Sybil calls that fig the best of the strawberry verte types.  It's a fig you'll be glad you own from the taste perspective alone.

Paradise closed a long time ago but now Sybil is selling the property which includes her home.  If any of you want to live in Virginia Beach it would be a terrific place.  If I was in a position to buy it I would.

Definitely do it ASAP.  The longer you wait the more the roots will be tangled.  Submerge in warm water as Suzi mentioned.

Great work.  If the cutting doesn't root quickly you may have to remove those figs.   It may not have enough energy for both processes.  Best of luck with them!

If the skin is purple it's not a white or gold anything, no matter what the label said.  When there's ripe fruit show us the eye, the inside & outside of the fruit and a few representative leaves and then the experts can give you their opinions.

Hi, Sybil!   Glad to 'see' you again.  I'm sorry you're leaving.  Where will your new home be?  It sounds like the perfect place, I wish I was in a position to buy it.  Is there a link to a sale ad?  I'm part of several homesteading and small farmers organizations and I could put the word out for you.

You might have pulled up the next galicia negra.  With figs you don't have to pull out the roots.  If you get the bottom node it can't come back.

If you want to separate them the best way to is to put them in a pail full of warm water, rinse the soil away, them gently tease the roots apart.  Then you can pot them up separately.

I don't like my cuttings to experience temps below about 28 F.  A lot depends on how dormant they are.  Temps of 20 usually don't affect the viability of a fully dormant cutting but they can for a more tender variety.  Even 28 can harm some varieties, especially if they aren't as dormant as you think they are.  One indicator is sap flow.  It flows freely and is opaque and milky during the growing season.   It gets thinner and less milky as the plant progresses toward dormancy.  The flow from a cut surface also decreases.

My in-ground Hardy Chicago typically sprouts late May.  My potted plants in the garage start budding in April to early May.    I work hard to keep them asleep because I can't give them as much light as they need until Early May.  The logistics of shuffling stacked fig pots is too much.

I moved a bunch of plants to OR, which may not be the same.  I had my state Ag dept come out and issue a phytosanitary certificate and that plus a form I got from the OR dept of AG was all I needed.  If it happens, call the state dept of Ag for CA and they'll tell you what to do.

VdB are wimpy in the heat but they should taste good.  You might want a fertilizer with micronutrients for them.  As far as other darks, have you considered Ronde de Bordeau, Figo Preto, AscPete's Bryant Dark, Hardy Chicago, Maltese Falcon & Beauty, Salem Dark, Col de Dame Gris & Noir, Celeste or Vista Mission?

Well, bad news. I met the former owner of the greenhouse. He speaks English about as well as I do. All of the figs came from California nurseries. What a disappointment. We'll still try to ID them in mid summer. Some of the plants may have come from smaller nurseries and may yet be exotics the nurserymen brought from home. There's only 1 from Monrovia which sounds like it may be a Janice Seedless Kadota.

Not only that, but all of the large trunks are dead. Hopefully some of the smaller trunks will sprout soon. I will deliver some of my longer season figs to the greenhouse to start their season there.

Welcome!  Will you have a car?  There's no one right at those places but several people are a few hours from them.  Will you be entering Canada when you go to Niagara falls?

Be sure to check this collection out before you go.  He has some varieties that people here would love to get.  I wouldn't get them here if you can get them in Malaysia.

Surgery is a last resort.  Most of the people I've talked to have had relief at first but after 3-5 years it all comes back.  You should be on 3 nasal sprays:  A steroid - mometasone has proven the most potent of these, Ipratropium Bromide 0,06%, and Patanase which recently went generic.  Then for pills, don't wait until you start having problems to start taking the pills.  You're then behind and it's hard to catch up.  Zyrtec and singulair can be taken together and started 2 weeks before your season starts.  Benedryl is better for allergies than pseudoephedrine and wont raise your BP.  Watch for drowsiness with the benedryl.

And let's not judge each other - not for what we buy nor for what we wont.  How many thousands of dollars have we put into out fig growing?  For some charismatic people they get given a lot of things but still have to buy supplies for their cuttings & trees to survive.  For others there are plane trips, time & schmoozing in foreign lands to get rare figs.  For others fighting harsh conditions there's lighting and winter protection expenses.  It's nice to recoup some of those.  I personally don't have that kind of money to spend on a cutting (yet  :- ).  From what I hear from people who own boats a fig plant may be a better investment from both a financial and enjoyment standpoint and $5000 for the next one is nothing compared to the price of a boat..

I visited with a local urban garden guy today.  He bought a medium sized nursery from an elderly Italian man.  The man speaks little English.  There were several fig trees in the greenhouses that he brought from Italy.  They all look about like these.   Are you all salivating yet?  There will be cuttings in the fall and photos for ID in mid summer.  These cuttings wont be free as he has to make $$ off of these things.
