It was my pleasure, Hershell. Thanks for taking the time out of your extremely busy schedule to visit. It was great watching you experience your first taste encounter with the likes of ripened MBVS, nj red, Cucchiano red, Hardy Chicago, San Donato, LSU Gold, Green Ischia, Alma, De'n Roig de Manyo, and a bunch of others.

Later in the day, I had another local visitor for a fig tasting tour. Same incredulous reactions to tasting something other than Celeste. He also collected a large bucket of figs for jam and beer brewing.

It was a fun day. Wills and Wayne, looking forward to your visits.

Mike, it is sweet with a refreshing aftertaste. Definitely a keeper. I like the early productivity of this variety as well as the closed eye. Plus it is from China, my one and only.

I'm with you on 100% on squirrel-cide, Jimmie despite my tag line of Peace, Love and Understanding. My only issue with these traps are my two cats wandering around the property.

OMG! Lowe's making a labeling error? How is that possible? LOL.

Now it all makes sense...I have a have a healthy, vigorous Black Mission. Welcome to the orchard!

Thanks, Wayne and others for pointing me in the right direction.

I have good news and bad news...

Good news - Looks like the one remaining fig (I pulled the rest, wanting the tree not to divert energy into figs that would drop) was on its way to ripening.

Bad news - the birds got to it before fully ripening.

So, what's the deal with Dauphine from UCD? Is is or is it not a San Pedro fig?

Joel, would you agree that it is a Mount Etna type fig (Hardy Chicago, MBVS etc)?

Francisco, do you many Mount Etna type figs in your area? Any Sicilians in Portugal?

Yeah, it's the Alma twins again. The sisters that keep on giving.
The picture of the one with the drop of honey says it all about the taste. I'm lucky to have them.

Thank you Tam.
The dark purplish color certainly does not jibe with Magnolia . The leaves and fig shape are similar, though.

More pics from other growers please.

These figs were about 3-5 days too early to pick. When ripe they are rich and figgy. The skin is tough.
I bought a small tree from Lowe's 3 years ago labeled Magnolia. It is now a huge 7x7 healthy beast producing these figs.

If anyone has Magnolia/Brunswick, please let me know if yours looks like this. Posting pictures would be great.

Removing the (supernatant) liquid after cooking the figs for a few hours gives you a nice amount of fig juice... plus it cuts the cooking time in half.  What remains can be pureed and canned.
Fig juice is really good.

Good to hear from you! Sorry to have assumed your early retirement from the forum. Very glad that the Verte is doing well for you. If it's not too much of a bother, I and others would very much like to know a little more about these Portuguese figs. Thanks.

That pretty fig was not a breba after all. It's been a very good year for MBVS as well as others. Plentiful, delicious with very few bird attacks.

I've been eating so many figs lately that my taste buds are a little overwhelmed. I believe these are another variety from the Mt Etna area and as such share a similarity to SAl's EL in taste. They were the first to ripen, so judgment is reserved.

I received cuttings from a member who is no longer active 3 years ago. Not sure where he got them from. I was just wondering if anyone else who received cuttings had success growing them.

Thanks for posting that Dave. It's good to get the perspective of a connoisseur.

Girls are crazy too:

Calvin, I don't have a recipe. What I do is cut up the peppers into small slices, microwave them to kill any bacteria and to soften them up and then immerse them in olive oil. Kept refrigerated, they last a long time.

Wills, the shame I feel for having such a large figless area on my property is as deep as the Grand Canyon. If I were a Japanese samurai, I would not be long for this world.

Bob, the list shifts with the changes in the season, but I would say that most of my top figs are Mount Etna types which include, MBVS, nj red, Gino's, hardy Chicago, Bethlehem Black, sal's, etc.

VDB, RDB, KB, Socorro Black, Stallion, Alma, Petit Negri, magnolia ( yes the much maligned magnolia) are on my list too.

Of course there are many, many more I am waiting to sample like the col de dames, ischia black, Maltese falcon etc etc.

I suspect that cement contributes significantly to the health of the trees but cannot prove it. An old timer here in the South once told me he broadcasts powdered cement under his fruit trees giving them great growth and huge yields. Makes sense considering cement comes from limestone.

Hershell, anytime you are the general area, the girls would like to meet you.

The invitation is open to any forum fig-nut.

Hi Suzi, thanks. The air layers are being ripped apart by the mockingbirds for one thing. Also, because the branches are full of figs, the tips have not been growing. Lastly, I think I lost my touch.

Taste? Well, when San Donato first hits the tongue, you get the impression of a light, effervescent, capricious, little thing flirting with you..a passing fancy...eye candy. But then the second wave washes over the taste buds. Bam! This is serious, substantial, rich, full-bodied intelligent fig marrow teasing the olfactory and gustatory receptors as it passes the mouth on its way to the esophagus.
In a word..exquisite.

Thanks for posting this, Wills.
Hershell is definitely a good one. Generous to a fault!  I had the pleasure of several visits and hopefully there will be more (Alma Sisters are asking for you, Hershell!)
This fig thing opens up all sorts of friendships that would otherwise never have occurred.

Wills is no slouch in the generosity department either. And of course Rafed. And JD. And....

Ah heck, any more of this saccharine jabber and I'll become diabetic, so I'll stop.

OK, it is much better cold. I think the problem is the unsweetened chocolate. Next time, will need to add a little more cane syrup or brown sugar for balance.

Rafed, enjoy your break!

To be honest, it sounds a lot better than it tasted. It will need some tweaking. It may be better cold.

Recipe:

Celeste figs
pecans
chocolate
graham cracker crust
cane syrup
lemon juice

Mix together and serve

How would you like to have someone hand deliver a mature Smith fig tree with ripe figs hanging from its branches right to your door? Plus a bunch more fig trees as an afterthought. Man, it's a tough gig being on the receiving end, but someone has to do it.

These were my first Smiths and I won't even attempt to describe the taste. Jimmie said it best, above in his post.

Again, thank you Jimmie!

If it wasn't for Jimmie, I would not be on this forum today. One day he came over to look at my meager collection of a few dozen fig trees and before I knew it, hooked me up with F4F and helped me start a fig orchard by donating dozens of trees. I could go on and on about Jimmie's generosity and untold contributions to other forum members but am sure he would want me to stop due to another quality he has...modesty.
Thanks a bunch, Jimmie, you ARE the man!

Jimmie, it really is about ripeness. If we didn't have the birds and the squirrels and the rain, and the humidity to worry about, this would be the result all of the time..

Rich tasting figs like this Atreano...

Bronxie,

Very astute of you to notice the Alma Sisters' new found prudishness.  They are late this season, perhaps due to the severe thrashing (pruning) I gave them earlier in the year. Nevertheless, they are loaded and and ready to return to their wantonness anytime soon.

Wayne, NJ Red takes the rain really well. I have never had a problem with splitting/rotting. The birds are another story.

You may recall this is the tree that was run over by an SUV.
