I hope all was well, we had tornado warnings and got stuck in the office. Really you do want to be in a nice windowless concrete structure then. Perfect. Now the coast is getting hammered. Just hope nobody gets injured. It's flying tree season in NC.

I've never done any of those thing, fig is fine and has lots of fruit.
It's never dropped fruit. But I learned that we don't have fig wasps in NC. So Smyrna types are out.

Always learning...

Looks so delicious and beautiful. I love chevre. Problem is, my figs never make it into the house. If mine looked this good, I'd have to share...

Well thank you Pete from NC and everyone thank you so much. I'm learning every day.
Going to make the best of this little monster and see if we can't get a bunch of Figlings / Figlets?
She's been so good for so many years. I can't wait to take some pictures.

It's about 15 years old. In the past I've only trimmed a few branches so I could get around it with the lawnmower. My mom's friend had a fig tree when I was a child. I love the way it looked, but finally it made no sense to not be able to reach the fruit. It's now trimmed to 5 feet. Wondering of going to 4 feet in height and diameter. I found some branches that are beginning to root into the ground. The main roots are as thick as an elephant trunk, and branches as thick as an arm. It should get plenty of sun into the center of it now.

Bratwurst in dark Bier gravy over mashed potatoes with red cabbage ROCKS!
We had smoked pork shoulder, lots of veggies and Key lime pie.

Come on down in July when it's time to pick! It's like standing in a shady tent. Ok a very hot, humid, shady tent...

What parts root better? Last year's growth or 2 year old (older branches)? Now that my garden is littered with fig tree guts, which parts do better?

Poor thing is forever competing with the beech tree for sunlight.

It took some guts. It is done. The 15 ft Fig has been pruned. I don't think it was 25ft, but it sure was tall.  I left a couple of branches with last years growth to see what produces better. A test of sorts. My backyard littered with fig tree guts. Big sigh.. It was nice to see that it got so big, but I couldn't reach half the fruit. If you like I'll send you some cuttings, I'd like to try and root a different type. There is a smaller, sleeper in the back of this tree that has never had a single fruit. On the big one I could harvest half a pitcher of fruit every other day, even not being able to reach the top. I don't know what type it is. Came from the local family owned garden shop as a birthday present. I've never ever sprayed it or fertilized it. Just Carolina blue skies and good rains.

I see you can prune Figs. Crazy thought. I just might reduce them from 10+ feet in height to a pickable height. I'm afraid to damage the wood though. Should I only clip the side branches?

I'd love one to try to root. I can cut a bunch from my unknown, but very nicely producing tree, if you like.

hmm , you may have to explain yourself to the agriculture agent at the airport and miss your connecting flight.
I received daffodils once in a package from my parents in Germany. My little mini daffies smile at me every spring, with a sweet buttery hello from my parents up above.

Lifelong Fig lover here.
As a child I was allowed to pick the occasional fig from my child hood friends fig tree in Hungary. Fuege!!
Testing for ripeness daily, only to find out>> it wasn't my turn!
I've had two figs in my back yard for the last 10 years. One tree bears lots of fruit, the other one sleeps. They are both over 10 feet tall.
For years I didn't have any fruit, until a nice gentleman at the farmers market told me that yes I do have fruit, its just that the deer get to it before I do. I thought the fruit was falling off, due to some nutritional deficiency in the soil!  Duh me.
So now I do as I was told.   I get 2 bricks of a stinky Dollar store soap 3 pack. A screw driver bores a hole through the center of the soap. A supermarket baggie handle gets stuffed into and through the center hole. I tie about  4 soaps per tree in strategic height into the perimeter of the fig tree.  The soap smells like human, the baggie makes a noise and collects a bit of soapy water. When touched the deer get a bit of stinky soapy water surprise. So the last few years I've had nice silver dollar size fruit on my trees.   I have no idea what kind of fig they are. Came from the local gardens store. One year I had the tiny weird borer with the stack of "ash like" sawdust. Next year it was gone. Never cut or burned anything. I'd love to get a bigger fig fruit if possible, but don't know what to look for here in NC.... So nice to meet you all.

central NC  area 7a, big leaves and silverdollar size fruit, light brown outside and pinkish inside. Yummy! figs.jpg  fig tree.jpg
PS.. I can't touch the bottom of the birdhouse, it's probably 7 feet off the ground..
