Spring 2013 I picked up a HC at The Depot. It was a nice looking 12x12" fig in a 1 gal pot. I uppotted to 3 gal and did my usual fert/ water/ sun stuff. Over the next 2 seasons it has put on a total of about 6" of growth. All indications are that it is healthy. It put out a few figs that never ripened this year and last. The leaves are 5-6" and rough like sandpaper. (Sorry no pic). Is this a HC? Will it ever grow?

I set this air layer in early August so after about 7 weeks it is time to separate it. One question I have is about the solid green branch. When I got this cutting it was long and I was able to get 3 individual plants from it. Two are variegated and one is this solid green. Will it ever revert back or set a variegated branch of it's own? If it will always be green it's on the chopping block.

Subject: Abbreviations and Numbered Figs Replies: 7

I'm thinking about my wish list for Fall/Winter cuttings but I'm getting lost in the abbreviations of certain figs especially numbered figs. Perhaps some of you could help me fill in the blanks.
UCD = University California Davis
UCR = University California Riverside
ARM = ?
GIHVO = ?
AZN = ?
KAC = ?
LSU = Lousiana State University
NSA = ?
I = Italian
GM = ?

There may be more, but that's a good start.
Anyone have experience w the numbered figs in pots? I'm in NJ z6a. (Pots kept in barely heated greenhouse for the winter.)
Thanks!

After last winter I've learned my lesson. I'm heating my greenhouse. Only question is how? I have a $500 budget and I want to heat with 100lb propane tank. This leaves me with $350 for the unit. I was thinking something like:

http://m.globalindustrial.com/m/p/hvac/heaters/vent-free-and-room-heaters/vent-free-radiant-heater-hr25ml-liquid-propane-25000-btu?infoParam.campaignId=T9F&gclid=CLDIqcqUiL4CFU4R7AodVXMAMw&gclsrc=aw.ds

Any thoughts?

I have a harbor freight 10 x 12' greenhouse. I know I need 20-25k btu's. I figure kick on at 40 degrees and off at 50 and let that cycle all winter. I know I'll get cold spots so that should be fine. I thought I'd add a fan for circulation. Any idea how long the propane lasts?

The fist fig I ever took cuttings from needs to be severely trimmed. I think I will have 1000 cuttings to share. I'd trade for any variety I don't have or $20 for at least 25 cuttings (including shipping) I don't have the ability to store them long term as cuttings so I'd rather not bundle any smaller than that. I need to take this fig down to the fence line so you see how many I have. You can search my older posts for pictures. It is a golden yellow fig from Sorrento that I call U. 'Sorrento.' Please email me (easier to keep track that way). Thanks.

I have a friend in China. Last week she went to visit Wuhan University. I happen to have the fig 'Wuhan'. It's very interesting to me how figs traveled all over the world and I can have a piece of history in my collection. Apparently Spring is a little earlier there than here in NJ. Here's a taste of spring from Wuhan China. She calls these Sakura Cherry but I think they're Yoshino. Enjoy!

They sell Pro Mix in 2.8 and 3.8 cubic ft bags. (They call the 3.8 a bail). It is clear to me that one is more compressed than the other, so it's not really that the bag is only 1 cubic ft smaller than the bail. Does anyone know what the actual, usable volume is for each? I can get the bag for about $18 and the bail for $38. What is the best deal?

I had a similar issue with Sphagnum Moss, one supplier sells it by volume and another by weight. FYI the $4 bags at Home Depot weigh about .5 oz. (32 per lb!)

Anyone ever try to start cuttings in paper cups with the usual potting mix? I was thinking of rolling my own out of old magazines or newspapers. I could make them tall and narrow so I could fit quite a few in a tupperware bin. My original idea was to use root riot cubes but I've been discouraged by the reports of root rot when up-potting. I usually start my spring /summer cuttings in 50/50 pro mix HP and pine bark fines so I figure this should work for dormant cuttings as well. They would also be easy to up pot. I know a few people use the peat pots, but they seem awfully shallow to me. I figure a 2.5" x 6" paper pot could let a cutting grow for 8-10 weeks before it would need to be up potted. For my best cuttings I will use the 'ol sphagnum moss. But for the others I thought I'd try this.

I know Root Riot works well to root cuttings but I've heard that it tends to rot them once transferred to pots. I use 50/50 Pine Bark Fines / ProMix HP. Should I be worried? I hear that the answer is, as always, don't overwater. I'm pretty careful when I water. Am I just being paranoid, or should I not use them? I think I'll be rooting 300 cuttings. More or less. Has anyone had good success with RR? I've heard enough horror stories. What kind of mix did you use to pot into?

Has anyone heard when UC Davis will be shipping this year? Does anyone know if there is a limit on the number of varieties you can request in a year? The process seems like it is more complicated than it needs to be. Is there a "frequently asked questions" page? I saw one that focused on where to find info on the site, but nothing much on the ordering process. Is there a "leftover" cutting time when I could say "just send me whatever".

Last week I attended the MANTS show in Baltimore. For the 99% of you who don't know, it's a trade show for nursery growers to display what they have to buyers like me. I'm the purchaser for a large landscape company. Anyway... My wife accused me of wanting to go to only look for figs. I assured her that she was right! There were a few vendors who sold figs but Eastern Shore Nursery of Virginia stood out. They do an outstanding job of growing all kinds of fruit trees including 9 kinds of figs. They are the usual suspects but great for Newbies. Tey are a wholesale to the trade only company, but I know many Agway Markets sell them in my area of NJ. You can find all of their fruit products under the name "Hollybrook Orchards". I've paid about $30 each for 2 of their figs I bought from Agway. Now is the time to ask your local nursery to bring some in for you. Happy Figging!!!

I buy, sell, and trade figs. Many people here do the same. I propose we have a standard policy that if a variety is not true to name the seller should make that transaction right. I am only able to do what I do based on the word of people before me. If I say that my variety is "X" it's only because someone else told me it was.
I do my due diligence, I research the leaf and fruit to try to make sure everything is correct, but we are all human. People make mistakes. This will force me and whoever will also offer this to keep better records and put our money where our mouth is. I will put this out there as "the buck stops here" policy.

So here is a policy that I will implement for myself, if anyone has any input THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL please chime in.

A 200% Guarantee. If you can PROVE that a variety that you got from me is not true to name, send it back to me. I will pay for the shipping, and either reimburse you for twice the money (value) or offer you another 2 choices of figs with a similar value. I will pay return shipping.

I cannot do a DNA test on every fig in my collection, but I have a small but growing reputation to protect. This is my way of saying I will stand by my product and if it's not right, I'll make it right. Look for this guarantee on my trades and sales and buy or trade with confidence.

Subject: Root Riot for Christmas! Replies: 3

One if my gifts this year was a Root Riot system. I've been excited to give it a try since I heard rave reviews about it on the forum. Last year I started my cuttings in moss, but the Riot seems so much easier without the risk of shocking the new roots while transplanting delicate young cuttings. I do not wax my cuttings but it seems to make sence, I'll prob start. When starting the cuttings I gave them a fresh cut on the bottom. Is that necessary? If I wax the bottom, should I cut off the wax before they go in the Root Riot cubes (or moss?).

I was wondering if any of you were planning on attending this years MANTS Show. I'm not sure if I will be able to attend myself this year, but I thought this thread could be used to help forum members network at that time. If you've never heard of it, it's refered to as "the masterpiece of trade shows" at least as far as green goods and the landscaping industry is concerned. It's a two day show and if you are in the wholese business it will take that long to go through it all. If you are a landscaper, retailer, or wholesaler, this is the show for you. Sorry, it is NOT for the home gardener. Who is planning to attend?

So here's what I've been thinking of trying next year. I'm a landscaper and I have very good access to 15 and 20 gal pots. So what if I took a 20 gal pot and turned it into a kind of self watering pot, but instead of having the water in a larger (expensive) solid pot, I drop in a smaller solid pot where the roots could grow down to it. Let me know if you think this would work or not. :-)

I do not have a lot of indoor space to start cuttings. I was wondering, what is the minimum temp that cuttings will tolerate and still root? I understand that ideally they like 70-80 deg. But I think I will need to start them on the back deck. I will be trying the root riot for the first time, and they will go into large clear Tupperware containers for humidity (humidity dome). If temps get below freezing I can bring them in at night but what is a safe temp to leave them outside? I plan on starting them in mid march, so that by mid April I can transfer them into containers. By that time temps are a little more consistent and I could cover with plastic (hoop house) if I need to. What temp is safe to leave them outside?

Has anyone ever tried to root in Soil Moist Crystals?  I know you can root in water, but I hear that those roots are not really the best.  Soil moist hydrated with liquid fertilizer should work, right?  I would want it on the dry side, but still moist.  After roots develop the crystals should just fall off when its time to up pot.  Well that's the theory.  I'll have to give it a shot this winter.  Any thoughts?  let me know.

I am on the middle of building this 10x12' greenhouse from Harbor Freight. There are quite a few opinions about this greenhouse available online. As I have not finished building mine I'll reserve comment. I have recently gotten nervous about overwintering my figs in it. I do have the auto opening vents so it should not get too hot. But I am worried about it getting too cold. I have 4 small heaters that I plan on setting with a thermostat. Possibly at 35 or 40 degrees. Will this be ok? I'm thinking the daylight hours should be fine and some heat will remain at night, but for 4-6 hours they may be very chilly. Can potted figs (1 year old 3 gallon mostly) withstand a frozen root ball should something go wrong? I also don't want to make it too warm so they never go dormant. Any advice???

This is not my greenhouse but the same kind.
I will repost on all of the modifications I will be making to it in a later post.

Here is a great fig. It was brought over from Sorrento Italy. It now lives in NJ zone 6 uncovered. I had to pick these figs a couple days early because the squirrels are relentless. The color is chartreuse to golden yellow. The flesh is dark pink. It tastes to me mainly like a honeydew melon. Very sweet without being overly "figgy" tasting. I would call it a dessert fig. When ripe it will drip honey. If someone could ID this for me I'd be happy to send you a rooted plant when they go dormant. FYI, I will have plenty of cuttings in the fall-I like trades. PM me.

I plan on taking a lot of cuttings this fall/ winter. As to get them to to the tree stage more quickly, is there any reason why I can't just use larger ( longer) cuttings. Most of mine have been 6-8" or so but why not 24-30"? I realize that I will get less trees, but I would take that trade off. I was thinking of starting these in large Tupperware containers with just 1/3 or so in sphagnum moss and the rest of the branch outside the moss. This would be a "winter air layer" without the parent plant. Am I on to something or asking for trouble?

I was thinking of waxing both ends and using a food vacuum. I'd like to take cuttings in Nov-Dec and not start them till April. I do not have the indoor or heated space to deal with them much earlier than that. Anyone have a better idea? I am prob talking 10-20 cuttings each of 15-20 varieties. (Not my trees and would have to take them when available at the end of the season before owner wraps the trees)

I seem to have caught the bug as I just started collecting in march and am up to 80 varieties. Just had my first air layer success after just a month of rooting time. I would never want to propigate my own figs any other way.

Is it better to up pot then to leave in 1 gal pots all winter? I ask because I want them to be pot full of roots before up- potting and for some of them it may be late fall before that happens. #1. Is a 5 gallon pot 5 gallons? It's my understanding that it is more like 3.9 gallons.
#2. How many bags of pro mix in a cubic yard? 3.8 cubic ft is about 7 bags per yard.

When you do the math: 1gallon = .00495 yards, 3.9 gallons (#5 nursery pot) is about .019305 cubic yards.
In other words I think I can get 52 #5 pots out of 1 yard (7 bags) of pro mix.

Or am I completely wrong???

The next question is how do I lower that cost? I've used pine bark in my .5 gallon "first" pots, but that's not practical for the up-potting. Can I mix just regular nursery mulch in with my pro-mix? I get that for about $15.00/yd. at $35 per bag of pro mix I'm looking at $600 + 2.5 yards of mulch. (To make 5 yards of potting mix)

Grrrr. This is getting expensive. Then I have to run drip irrigation to them. That's the next issue.

I was also thinking 1/3 good topsoil, 1/3 mulch, and 1/3 promix. Any thoughts?

My babies have been in a hoop house with the min temp set at 60. Some days it can get up to 90 in there. I want to start to wean them off of the heater. How cold is too cold for them? What is the best way to acclimate them to the cold and lack of humidity? I was thinking of killing the heater during the day for a couple days, then less and less at night. In a week or two we'll have night temps 45/50. Is that still too cold for them? I'm thinking once the temp is ok then I can worry about acclimating to the lower humidity by opening the cover a little more each day. One problem at a time. Any thoughts?

I have been using a 50/50 pro mix HP and sifted pine bark mix. It is getting a little expensive. Can I use cedar mulch instead of pine bark? I can get that on bulk.

Just got my delivery from Stuewe of 4"x9" tree pots. Can't say they were cheap but I think they are perfect for growing fig trees. I'm a roots first kind of guy so the deeper I can start my cuttings the better. I think I can keep them in these pots for a year. We'll see. If you trade rooted figs with me someday, they will in these pots. I do have some extras that I would trade for figs. Send me a PM
