Subject: Phoenix fig varieties rising from the ashes Replies: 11
Posted By: SCfigFanatic Views: 318

I get a couple small trees that usually die back in winter.
It has never killed enough figs to make a note of which variety.
They almost always grow back and set fruit. No matter the variety.
I look at my whole orchard, planted in stages.
All 1 year old trees look about the same as any other 1 year old.
Same with the 2 year olds, and the ones over 3 years old.
There is a definite pattern of growth between the ages of the tree.
I don't worry about die back, just roll with the punches and learn.
I've lost more trees to rodents chewing bark when I
put straw around the tree base than winter die back.
The straw in winter collected mice.

For planting in ground, everything is about the environment around them.
Chill hours for your location limit or extend the growing season.
If you grow a apple tree needing 1200 hours of chill, it most likely will not fruit in a zone with 400 chill hours per year average.
Same with black sweet cherries.
Live and learn.

http://www.gardenality.com/Articles/1055/Resources/Calculators-and-Charts/Chill-Hours-Map-Chart-For-United-States/default.html
If I could grow oranges like they do in florida,, I would.
I'm just not in the right zone for it.
But I would have no need for a green house as I picked more than I really wanted already.
My season is plenty long enough for figs, but not suited for many other fruits.
Just my thoughts.

In ground it takes 3 years average for mine to survive winters without any added
protection. Even when I get winter kill back, the new growth often is 4-6 feet of growth in one summer.
And still produces fruit.
My zone is warmer, and does give a longer season.
Not sure about zone 6, I moved from a zone 5, you don't see figs in ohio.
Those that do will be in pots.

Talking about dormant trees.
Last Thanksgiving I took dormant peach- 2 varieties, a nectarine, and a plum cutting.
Then I grafted those onto a peach tree grown from seed.
It has been in the closet, it looks like leaf buds are swelling!

I have figs still hanging on too, but the leaves have dropped long ago.
The question was asked if figs needed to go dormant.
I say no.
That is one way to explain fall.
The trees are tired.

Ok, so why are your figs not growing like they do with long daylight hours of summer?
As daylight hours get shorter the plant knows its time to save its energy in the root system.

In areas that have longer daylight hours and do not get cold, the figs never go dormant.

Try to take a dormant fig and give it 8 hours a day of lighting.
Even inside they stay dormant.
Increase lighting hours and they come alive.

I have tried it.

Most grown like this put fruit on in their first year.
Remember these are young trees that you do not
want to let it fruit.
I let the tree concentrate on its root system.
It will sync with nature, and the provided daylight hours outside.

Sas,, the top picture was taken nov 11. Would you call that slow growth compared
to the same trees in the lower picture?
I have grown many figs through winter and put them in ground first of spring.
They grow fine during the winter and really take off when
they hit the dirt.
It is daylight hours that "trigger" plants.
Just my experience so far.

Just home made lighting.
top photo shows date taken, the pic under it is the growth since then.
These will go directly to the orchard in march.
Winter fun, in a closet.
It is the extended daylight hours that brings them out of dormancy.
I run 12 on 12 off.

I ALWAYS cut a fresh cut at bottom of cutting.
I leave 3/8" to 1/2" below last node but no more.
The extra left below last node seems to promotes rot.
Just my experiences.

Sounds like spider mites.
I use a teaspoon of canola oil, teaspoon of liquid soap, teaspoon of lemon juice.
Mix with water in a hand sprayer. Repeat 1 week.
Has worked for me in the past.

I have had cuttings in a ziplock after sitting in the crisper drawer a full year take off and root.
I have never cleaned a cutting, afraid of killing good cells of cutting bark.
I use liquid electric tape to seal ends, it peals right off.

I always wanted to convert a chiffarobe or bureau to a growth chamber.
Never got around to it.
By the way the figs are growing, they will be 4-5 foot tall by march.
My electric bill was $58 this last month, with a all electric 4 bedroom house.
Not bad. At least plugging in the 350 total watts of LED made no noticeable
difference in my electric bill.
Guaranteed, you cant say that running High pressure sodium, or MH
lights.

I'm stuck on LED lights.
They do everything and more than I would expect.

I'm sure the last few remaining will cooperate.
There is a underscore _ in my paypal address that causes issues.
I gave everybody a lil extra something.
Makes it fun, to surprise somebody.
The last batch has some boxes with 4 or 5 cuttings all
marked individually and in just 1 zip lock bag to hold moisture.
It was 2 day shipping so I figure they will do just fine.
Good luck with everybody rooting.
I have to find me some cuttings to root over winter.

This money came out of my pocket to ship it to you, please do your part of re paying your

This all has become too much bother trying to share cheap cuttings, and having people be responsible.

Personally I like to let it all grow, then pinch the tops for side branching after it is full of leaves..
I'm sure you will be fine. It may stunt growth temporally.

Good work.
It is fun, if nothing else.

Dragon fruit shoots.

I love my LED lights.
just cheap Chinese led's still running after 4 years on the one fixture with 2- 50 watt led's.
Colored led's are 5 years old.
Good enough, especially for all I had to pay for the leds. And they work just like day

I live in zone 7b-8
I have 70+ fig trees in ground.
I root in winter then transplant in early march to the ground.

Die back to the ground is common in my zone
for the first couple years of growth.
They almost always have grown back from the ground come spring.
Each year I get less die back as the tree gets older.
It has been average about 3 years old for the in ground before I stopped getting the winter
die back.

I just put all my figs and dragon fruit in a closet that now has 2- 100 watt warm white LED's.
I also have 120 watts of the red/blue led grow lights.
The closet stays between 78-80 degrees with the lighting and heat being moved with fans
on the led lights.
This is my best artificial lighting set up yet.
My plants will see no sun until March.
I have been taking a picture every 3 days to track progress.
It will be fun to watch the plants thrive under LED lighting through out the winter.

I have rooted many many cuttings smaller than pencil diameter.
For the way I root, I cut down each cutting to about 6" long.
When I give or sell cuttings, I try to use only larger than pencil diamter
and I cut them at 7-8" long each.

I rooted a Croisic last winter just for something different I have
to get duplicates.
The first to fruit was MWasmley with a light fig and yellow center.
I took pictures of it but lost the picture when I had to reformat computer.
They will stay in the ground, some figs like the green greek took 4 years to fruit.
But when it did this year, it was loaded.

Thanks Alan. Many have contributed to adding to my orchard.
Thanks to all of them as well.
