Those bulbs are mini ovens, burn at 500 – 800 degrees and maybe more. Right now that’s a 250 watt, rather small. I think I’m going to move some of my smaller real BM’s that are loaded with fruit in there, raise the light a little and put in a 400 watt. I don’t know if you’ve ever grown under lights but it’s a good idea to level out the canopy so all get approx the same light. I have barbell weights on the floor with cord pulling down the branches to kind of level them out otherwise the taller might burn and the lower will not get proper light. You have a “BM” from Portugal? I’m not sure this is really BM. It might be black and from Madeira but that doesn’t make it Black Madeira.

It’s sad to see the season ending so I decided to extend it for a few weeks. The mother tree is on Madeira Island. He called it Black Madeira. Its 2 years old. I know it has a red inside. Puts on lots of figs like Jon’s BM, ripens about the same time, leaves look somewhat similar. The first ones that started ripening disappeared quickly. I was determined to taste/see a ripe one even though it’s not optimal growing conditions. I brought it inside under metal halide. Hung some plastic sheeting from the ceiling (I can do these things since I’m not married :) Today it was 86f inside and 70f outside. I have room for another one in there.

I had to pick one to see the inside. The last 3 that made it this far disappeared. Surprisingly good taste for an unripe fig.

My first fig from a 2 year old tree. Didn’t put out any figs the first year. Nice rich taste even though it wasn’t fully ripe. John had 2 trees same fig. His big one had to be the tallest tree I’ve seen in north Jersey, I estimate 30 – 35 feet tall.

John was old and a little strange. First time I met him he was the nicest guy in the world. He said I could eat all I wanted, come back anytime. I had some figs but they weren’t quite ready. He said I could come back and do an air-layer. He says don’t even ring the bell just do whatever you have to do. I go back about 2 weeks later after several days of heavy rain but his car is not there. I do the air-layer and gorge myself on figs. Lots of splits. I’m just about to leave and John shows up. I’m not sure he remembers me. He is clearly agitated because I’m in his backyard. I try to explain but he doesn’t remember it that way. I apologize and I get out of there.

5 weeks later I’m not looking forward to going back for the air-layer. Over the next couple of days I pass his house few times until I don’t see his car. I go in the backyard and the air-layer is gone.  I took some cuttings and got the hell out of there quick.

This is John’s trees/fruit.

My first fig from a 2 year old tree. It started to split a little so I picked it. Very nice, rich taste. I also have Brogiotto Bianco. Unfortunately it dropped all figs the first 2 years. Mother trees are in Italy.

Thanks for the link, this one could be Stella. My leaves seem to be a little more decorative but leaves can vary, sometimes a good deal.

Most, not all of the figs are slightly deformed. These are my first figs. Netting works good for the day creatures but not so good for the night creatures so I’ve been bringing this one in at night until it ripens.

Depending how far the shipping destination, once you go over 1 cubic foot, 1728 cubic inches, shipping almost doubles.

35 x 8 x 8 = 2240

31 x 8 x 8 = 1984

Thanks for the tip. Can anyone post some pics of their Stella leaves? I emailed One Green World who claim to have reintroduced Stella but haven't heard back yet.

Not sure that leaf matches up

This one was almost perfect.

I first noticed Getty Green about 4 years ago on Getty Ave, Clifton. I’d pass every 3-4 months on the way for routine blood tests. My Doc is always trying to find something. I never saw anyone outside. I must have visited 40 times over the years. No one ever answered the doorbell. Finally I saw an elderly woman spraying a young child with the hose. Clifton has a lot of ethnic neighborhoods. Unfortunately her English wasn’t the best. I had a hard enough time explaining that I wanted a cutting; I didn’t bother asking her anything else.

These trees are about 5-6 blocks from Getty Green. I rang his doorbell every time I rang hers. He never answered :(

I haven’t covered my 6 in ground trees for about 6 years. After losing all above ground growth last winter I will be covering this year. I use these

You really only need 4 or 5 feet to have a good crop. The cages are stackable but you need some type of stake or the winter winds will blow them over. Tie branches together tightly, prune, stack 1 or 2 cages, wrap tightly with tar paper, hold temporarily with a staple, tie cord around tightly.  Previous years I would pile a little dirt all along the bottom to deter mice. If they find their way in they have a warm house and all the bark they can eat. This year I will be using Bass’s suggestion of a bowl with mothballs at the bottom instead of dirt. I fashion a top from tarpaper and hot glue. The wrap takes about 15 minutes a tree.

Some say VM and VDB are the same fig. I’ve been growing both for about 10 years. They are similar, both are excellent but I think they are different. In my yard VM is a stronger grower and more productive. DNA testing showed VM is the same as VDB but how deep do they look? My sister and I share the same DNA but of course are completely different. If I could only grow one it would be VM. This year VDB fruit are smaller than usual and somewhat tough on the outside. VM put out a nice crop of  breba this year which was also unusual.

There was a thread about VM a month or so ago. I don’t remember who it was but they had a large tree with no figs. In my experience VM pushes out lots of figs year 1.

In ground VM, all the necks on that plant are at least that long and some are longer.

I have a lot of varieties with long necks this year. Sals (EL), MBVS, Hardy Chicago and a bunch of unknown locals.

The potted VM with the short necks is about 4 years old and came from the in ground VM.
