This came to me as Noire de Caromb. My first figs. Can anyone growing it chime in? I'll post a pic of the inside if it survives the critters.

Hey, thanks for the endorsement. Glad it arrived OK.

Thanks everyone :)

I can vouch that KK's plants come well boxed and look just as it did on ebay.

I've never grown Latarolla, that I know of. LW and Lucy's have a similar taste, sweet with hardly any figgy taste. Probably why its one of my Mom's favorite figs, she has a huge sweet tooth :)

Both are strong growers. Before Lucy's I thought LW was my most vigorous fig but Lucy's may be even stronger.

LW tends to have longer necks. The trees were about 8 miles apart.

I didn’t expect these first ones to taste fantastic. Rooted last winter, has about 20 figs, root bound in a trade gallon and requires water twice a day which should water it down.  MY 2 year old hasn't ripened any yet.

About 10 years ago I noticed some yellow jackets had managed to enter a small hole at the very edge of the roof deck. It was early spring and still pretty cool so there weren’t many of them yet.  I had a good vantage point from one of the upstairs windows and noticed they would crawl up out of the hole and sun themselves for a minute or two on the roof before flying off. I did a little research and ordered Tempo SC Ultra from a Florida pest control company. At the time it was not available for non-commercial sale in New Jersey. I brushed some on their favorite singles and in about 5-6 days they were gone.

In my yard LW is sweet, still the fig my Mom asks for every year. She was a little depressed when both were killed to the ground. They sprung back nicely, about 9 feet tall and will provide some figs.

Yours seem to have short necks. Of course that neck was an exception, they have long necks but usually not that long.

Thats a quarter in the center

I stumbled upon Lyndhurst White (named after Lyndhurst NJ) next to a 7/11 two blocks from my house about 12-13 years ago. The owner was a very old Italian guy with a huge garden, grapes, tomatoes, eggplants squash etc. He had a communication problem so I was unable to get much from him. His son in law told me the original tree was from Lyndhurst but was long gone. He also mentioned as he walked away, “The key to this fig was pruning”. He never explained and I never saw them again. That winter the tree was left uncovered (it was covered the previous winter) and the following spring there was no garden.  Soon the house went up for sale and the tree disappeared.

His tree was trained to the side. A single trunk about 8 inches thick, about 10 - 12 feet long. The top was cut and about 6 – 7 feet off the ground. He would trim all the branches off at about 1 – 2 feet long. The new growth would cascade down like a waterfall and then go back up. It consumed a lot of room in his yard. Some of his figs were the size of my fist. I’ve been unable to grow them that big.

I grow mine as a bush. I have a small sun challenged yard and could never train LW like he did and use so much room. I covered the first 3-4 years. This past winter both LW’s were killed to the ground. This was the first major damage in about 5 years. LW is sometimes too vigorous for its own good. It tends to shoot branches out from everywhere. First couple of years I got some splits. Can’t remember the last time it split.

Don’t laugh at the artwork but this is kinda how he trained his fig

Rosemary had no idea the variety. She told me her dad planted it “about” 50 years ago. I think the figs will get a little bigger. I don’t have ripe pics off my tree only ones from Rosemary’s tree, which was covered with birds and not quite ripe. I have no idea if its a Mt Etna variety.

I know how you feel. About 10 years ago, when we paid to have our grass cut, the guy bumped into a tree and was attacked by a swarm. They took him to the hospital. I carefully scan the trees before I cut the lawn.

Two years ago I look out the window and see this huge hive on the corner of our yard.

2012.jpg

Last month I find this small hive forming right above where I acclimate the figs. 5am I sprayed the hive and out they came right to the ground dead.

Subject: Secrets of the Vatican: Fig Leaves on Statues Replies: 5
Posted By: KK Views: 318

We’ve all seen the idealized nude statues and figures in the art displayed in Rome and elsewhere in Italy, dating back hundreds of years to when nudity wasn’t something to be hidden. On a trip to Vatican City, however, you’ll no doubt see some nude statues and some that have a fig leaf placed over their genitals. Those fig leaves aren’t original — they were added later.

In the Book of Genesis, it’s the leaves of the fig tree that Adam and Eve use to cover their nudity, once they feel ashamed by it. So when the Catholic Church’s Council of Trent decided in the mid-1500s that nudity in religious art was no longer acceptable. Of course, much of the religious artwork already on display in the Vatican featured nude figures. Rather than get rid of it, church officials decided to simply cover the genitalia in the same way Adam and Eve had — with fig leaves.

On many free-standing sculptures in the Vatican Museums, you’ll still see the added fig leaves — some cast in plaster, others carved and added separately. In paintings, fig leaves or other forms of drapery were added to many nude figures by later artists. Even Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement,” which covers the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, was scandalous when he finished it in 1541 for all the nude figures. It wasn’t until after his death, however, that the nudity was covered up by another artist. When the painting was restored in the 20th century, some — but not all — of the drapery was removed.

Art restorers could theoretically just remove all of the fig leaves and drapery from art when it wasn’t part of the original design, but some art historians argue that the fig leaves are now part of the history of the artwork. While you’re touring the Vatican Museums, you’ll see examples of both the original nude figures and some with their fig leaves or drapery still intact.

Every so often I see this guy running in shorts and bare-chested with earbuds. I’ve seen him for years. He runs in the dead of winter (maybe not last winter) in shorts and bare-chested. Over the years I’ve seen him many times in many places so I more or less have his route figured out. I’ve seen him in Passaic, come through Rutherford and East Rutherford. He must be running to work cause I’ve seen him run into the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

Today I was in the backyard watering and he passes right by, stops, pulls the earphones out and asks me if my in ground figs died to the ground. I said they did, he said mine too and off he goes.

The breba’s were decent, reminiscent of the main crop but nowhere near as good. They could have ripen a day or 2 longer but everyday 1 or 2 disappear so I grabbed them while I could. It will be 4 years old at the end of the season. It’s in an 18 gallon tub. Vista is a strong grower that puts on figs from the first year. I also have one in ground probably close to 10 years old, died to the ground last winter.

Not sure about leaving so many leaves on tho. Common sense tells me a cutting won't support that amount on top, so still a bit skeptical. More than happy to be proved wrong on that score.

It is, I have several sizes. I've caught hundreds and hundreds. I use about a 1 1/2" square piece of white bread covered in peanut butter, deadly. I also made a cover out of chicken wire that eliminates tripping the trap from the outside do to their curiosity. Do you put the peanuts on the trip plate or after the trip plate? They must step on the trip plate.

I've tried many recommended baits for groundhogs. I've caught them only with broccoli. They like the tops much better than the stalks.
