Is the general consensus here that most (if not all) of the foliage should be removed? Leave just the smallest leaf + shoot, or no leaves at all?

I go small and try to leave as many leaves as possible. After removing them I put them in the shower for a day or 2 and regularly spritz the walls. They all took.

Congratulations! I probably had Chestnuts every year as far back as I can remember. They’re big around Thanksgiving, we always had them. You bake them in the oven. You need to make a little slit with a knife first otherwise they explode.

I hate ringing bells and usually pass by many times hoping to catch someone in the yard. I always open with “I couldn't help but notice your beautiful fig tree…….”

Most people are fascinated that we trade cuttings all over the world.

Not 1 person would allow a cutting from a growing tree so I usually add “could I come back in Oct/Nov and get a small cutting….”

Probably approached close to 30 people the last several years, only 1 bad experience.

99% are happy to share. Like one person said, when I do ring a bell I retreat down the stairs giving them plenty of room. I usually carry a letter or follow up with a letter with my name, address and phone number.

Not 1 person knew their variety. Every person thinks their fig taste fabulous. Most people with dark figs call it black.

I’m not above a midnight requisition. The way I look at it is the more figs I grow the better the critters eat.

I’ve only done 1 midnight requisition. I must have rung this guy’s bell every day of the week at least 20 times total. I finally clipped a small cutting from his front porch. It didn’t root. Justice!

Couple of years ago while hunting for fig trees I came across  2 large trees loaded with fruit. Had a nice talk though the screen door with the elderly woman who lived there. Her German Shepard clearly wanted to eat me. As usual I leave my name, address and phone number. Couple days later I get a message on my cell phone,  The son in law warns me not to come near the house.

No, never had that problem. It was a 3rd year RDB, pretty vigorous fig. The pic was taken in early April, all were successful. After I removed them I let it grow for a month and a few days ago I started 5 more on the same plant.

I am not giving up on it just yet. The tree is too vigorous and too pretty for that. Hope springs eternal for fig-addicts like myself, I suppose.

Vista is very vigorous. That plant is into its 4th year, in a 18 gallon tub, probably has 10-12 tips that look like that. Good luck.

I use PRO-Mix. It comes in several formulations. I use BX cause that’s the only one my supplier carries. I add extra Perlite (I don’t measure) and crab shell (approx 2% volume of soil), kelp meal (approx 1/2 to 1 tablespoon per gallon of soil) and a general-purpose granulated vegetable fertilizer (this year is was Jobe Tomato and vegetable 2-5-3, approx 2 tablespoon to 5 gallon of soil)

I fert my potted trees every 14 days rotating between Miracle Grow (24-8-16), fish fertilizer (5-1-1) and fish with seaweed fertilizer (2-3-1). All my in grounds died to the ground so they are also getting ferts.

Last winter was an anomaly, I hope. All my in ground trees were last covered about  4 years ago and suffered little to no damage. Earlier I thought they did not die to the ground however, Vista Mission, MBVS, Sals (Gene), Hardy Chicago, 2 Lyndhurst White died to ground and all sprouting nicely

I expect to get some figs this year.

Jim

I find that green growth quickly molds wrapped in paper towel so I remove any buds early from cuttings that are nowhere near rooting. I bend them off way before I get leaves. I only remove the green. The cutting expends energy producing those leaves so I remove them right away when no sign of roots.

everybody has their own way that works for them. I pot up to 7oz cups (you can fit a lot more into a bin) when they look like this. In a week or 2 you should see roots reach the side of the cup. I also break off any green growth when its clear roots are a long way away

I had tremendous rooting success this winter, for me best ever. Easily over 90%. That’s a good and a bad thing. I quickly ran out of room and was forced to do some pruning to reduce canopy size. They tolerate pruning very well.

I hate the heat and keep my place about 60 in the winter. This year I added bottom heat to the bins.   I root in 7oz cups, peeling away the cup when time to move to clear quart containers. I need to see the roots up until gallon time. I try to water only where I see roots, sometimes only on bottom, sometimes tipping the container to water the roots only on one side.

We have 4 TV set top boxes that generate good heat. At night I put the bins on dowels (12 inch glue sticks), on top of the set top boxes. I have to adjust the top of the bins from fully on to ajar depending on the moisture dripping from the top. I use grates meant for overhead lighting on the bottoms of the bins to raise the cups up so I can keep a little water in the bottom.

I fert as soon as I see roots (just a little bit of ferts). I rotate between  Miracle Grow (for veggies), fish ferts and fish ferts with seaweed. I use weak dilutions every 15 days or so. If water comes out of the bottom, I watered way to much.

I use PRO-Mix BX.

That’s like saying Fig Newton’s = Fresh Figs  :)

I get my boxes from a warehouse a few blocks away. The other day the forklift driver who picked my order asked me what I shipped in those tall boxes. I told him fig trees. He looked a little puzzled and asked "you mean Fig Newton’s"? I’m going to bring him some figs come August.

Left over from last year Hendersonville Green local unknown (TN).
My first year plant put on figs but did not ripen. Received this from Chris in TN

Comes with a story
"Hendersonville, TN. The story goes that this 80 yr old woman's Grandfather brought a small tree
over from Italy. He kept the tree alive with water from his canteen while traveling by boat
from Italy to New York. One of his cuttings was planted 40 years ago on the side of
her house and the rest is history. The figs are large green with a strawberry colored pulp."
