** both taken **

PM me. If I don’t get back to you don’t take it personal, its already gone.
Received this in a trade last year. They said it was a Black Ischia tissue culture.
I don’t have red buds, maybe its still too young http://figs4fun.com/Info/Info_Black_Ischia.html

The plant I received was tiny and didn’t look like a fig. Took forever to get moving and then it grew pretty good but did not put out any figs.

It varies depending on how much growth I’m seeking. Early on I’ll push them, 24 on 8 off.

This is the cheapest I found 12.5 cents each, no tops, including shipping to NJ. I didn’t think I’d be around long enough to use 500 so I bought a 100 at my local Chinese restaurant.

Different things work for different people. If it were my plant I would not move a 3 gal BM to a 15 gal, but that’s just me.

I had a one year old thoroughly rooted BM in a milk gallon container. The next year I moved it to what they call a 20-pound pail, about 4 gallons.  At the end of the season I pulled it to check the roots and take some pics to sell on eBay. Keep in mind I was photographing the sides with the most roots to make the sale. These roots are pitiful compared to every other fig I’ve grown. I see more dirt than roots. I never did sell it.

And I fert every 10 – 14 days. My 1st BM (Thanks Jon) lived in a 12” clay pot the second year. The next year I moved  to a 15” clay pot and then a 20” clay pot. It now lives in a 20 gallon plastic tub. I can't be sure but I think it did better in a clay pot.

Sometimes its obvious when you over water a small cutting. When I do it I put several sheets of crumpled paper towel in a similar sized pot and gently push the over watered plant down into the PT. Drains the water right out in a couple of hours. If it was really over watered I'll do it twice. Its important to crumple so the PT reaches into the drainage holes.

I believe watering is critical. Normally they are slow/weak rooters. The weakest rooters I’ve grown. I’ve read some stories about BM dying. Over the last 10 years I’ve grown about 80 BM’s to various stages of maturity and have never lost one but I have seen them drop all their leaves after transplanting into a pot with too much soil. It’s my experience that they prefer a high ratio of roots to soil. Early last year I transplanted 6 well-rooted quarts into gallon milk containers. A high ratio of soil to roots. It unexpectedly poured one night and all 6 were drenched. Over the next week the leaves began dropping until there were none left. Took 2 months for them to comeback. The BM picture at the end of my BM auctions was in a 12” clay pot.

I fert newly rooted cuttings every 10-14 days with MG. The scoop MG provides has a big end and a small end. I use 2 level small ends to a gallon of water.  I only water where the roots are.

He will start a light colored fig from a cutting :) .

Seriously, the question is more: were those trees productive ?
if not, we all have already done that !
He was just lazy and waited a bit longer than the gallon stage ...

For big trees, I do agree, they are a threat as well . They should be kept under control for safety reasons.
But everyone is free to do has they like !

It was very productive, the birds loved it. I think it was a spur of the moment decision because last fall he pruned 4-5 feet off all branches.

I grew up in North Jersey, we were the only Cardinal fans for miles :)
My Dad brainwashed me early on. My parents hated the Yankees.

I worked many years in New York City. Of course 99% of the people in the office were Met/Yankee fans.

It was 1985, STL and the Mets were in a race for the division title. The bet was if STL won they would get a cheese cake covered in strawberries and if the Mets won I would bring in a cheese cake covered in blueberries. The strawberries were extra SWEET that year.

I have a feeling he did this to gain access to his backyard. He has no driveway and only a narrow walkway on either side of his house. That blacktop in the foreground is the parking lot of an office building. Since he took the fence down I’m guessing he’ll be using the parking lot as a driveway into his back yard. BTW, there were 2 trees, one behind the other.

I traded with a guy on Gardenweb last year, he said it was a tissue culture Black Ischia, tiny plant. Some posters said it looked like Blue Ischia on eBay from Hirt, others said looked like Mulberry.  The plant put out a lot of branches but no figs the first year. Rooted cuttings this year.

Some of my garaged figs suffered bark damage  last year, not much but enough for me to take notice, first time it ever happened. I declared WAR. Picked up a dozen cheap traps at Lowes, 2 for a $1. These 2 fell for peanut butter.

If it does not taste as good then is not Identical to Adriatic Jh,it is only similar,in leaf shape.
What I can see different,is that Adriatic jh is solid inside and your fruits have a little hole in center.
Both discrepancies could be that your plant is young,or not as healthy as Adriatic jh.
The leaf positively is identical to Adriatic jh,so grow them side by side and decide if they are the same!.

That’s very interesting Herman. I’ve always thought Anton’s GG was very similar to JH but never quite as good. I received Anton’s GG cuttings about 7 years ago, a few years after receiving plants from JH. Are you saying you solved JH’s origin?
