Brings back thoughts of 9/11. I live about 5 miles outside NYC, I could see the Towers burning from my attic window. At the time my Dad was in Hackensack Hospital. The Hospital called around noon because they were discharging some patients early to make room for 9/11 victims. When we got there they had a huge triage set up outside waiting for casualties that never arrived.

You also need to air your tubs out every day or so especially after spritzing. I pop the top and use it as a fan to exchange the air.I don't mist/spray all the cuttings only where I see mold.

For years I used a 10-20% solution of Clorox and a Q-Tip to dab mold away. It was only a temporary fix as the mold usually came back but was enough to keep it at bay. I switched to a Hydrogen Peroxide solution (1 tablespoon to a cup of water) in a mist/spray bottle. A spritz here and there works just as good and is not as caustic.

Came across this short PDF today containing info about  organic ferts and amendments.

32. Hydrogen Peroxide

It is this hydrogen peroxide in rainwater that makes it so much more effective than tap water when given
to plants. With the increased levels of atmospheric pollution, however, greater
amounts of H202 react with air borne toxins and never reach the ground. To compensate for this, many farmers have been
increasing crop yields by spraying them with diluted hydrogen peroxide (5 to 16 ounces of 35% mixed
with 20 gallons of water per acre). You can achieve the same beneficial effect with your house plants by
adding 1 ounce of 3% hydrogen peroxide (or 16 drops of 35% solution) to every quart of water you give
your plants. (It can also be made into an excellent safe insecticide. Simply spray your plants with 8
ounces of 3% peroxide mixed with 8 ounces of white sugar and one gallon of water.)

My NWL had Bush Doctor® Kangaroots® for $9.99. Saw the same stuff a few weeks ago at a Hydro store in Fairfield for $27. Loaded with Mycorrhizae, for $10 I couldn’t resist.

The Hydro store also had a cloner stuffed with various cuttings. My eyes were drawn to the fig cuttings. The guy said the owner lived in S Jersey and his fig trees suffered major damage from superstorm Sandy. The cloner was continually spraying/misting the cuttings with water constantly running off the ends. He said it was the first time they were trying to root figs. I see failure right around the corner.

I have some cuttings I clipped today from a local unknown. Rosemary’s New York Ave Purple located in Lyndhurst NJ.
Rosemary tells me her Dad planted it “about” 50 years ago. They just sold the house, moving to Arizona on the 1st. She tells me the new owners are cutting the tree down.
When I visited last August the tree was covered with birds so I didn’t get any really ripe figs but the ones I had were pretty good. Right now I’m doing 3 requests you pay postage, USA/Paypal only.

If I don’t reply to your message you didn’t make it.

Actually they have a pretty good chance of making it through customs, at least NY customs.

I recently traded with Indonesia, China, Germany and Portugal. They all arrived but you definitely are taking a chance.

I don’t have any problems acclimating to room humidity. Most of mine usually have more roots than leaves as I pluck off any vigorous buds while developing in paper towel land.

I fertilize regularly using ¼ teaspoon Miracle Grow to a quart of water. I’ve tried this on plants that are pretty dry with no apparent side effects. Your mileage may vary.

2) At what point do you feed your cuttings, and what is your method of choice? What I have handy is 'BioBizz Fish Mix liquid fertilizer', 'Jobes organic fruit and citrus granules'

3) Thus far I have NO GNATS (knock on wood)...I am potting up some of my cuttings into 1 gallon containers and using pro mix HP. Would you recommend I isolate these up-potted plants away from my gnat-free cuttings? I did not use pro mix HP for my cuttings in cups.

Thanks.

Back in Oct I had about 30-40 flying around at any given moment. Haven’t seen a gnat in months. Sand worked for me but its a PITA. My sand is usually wet, when its dry my plants need water. I use about a quarter inch on top and restrict access to the drainage holes. No Chemicals were used.

KK, in Los Angeles you can get those for free at big box grocery stores like Ralfs etc. They are large and nice. I tried to root a fresh cutting in some garden soil covered with a zip lock bag with 2 holes over that plastic container. They root and grow just as fast as using a baggie method + potting later.  The stores sell potato salads/pasta salads in those containers.

I tried wax and the black pruning goop that takes forever to dry. Started using this last year.

Air dries in under an hour, 5 minutes if you put it in front of a fan. Peels right off in 1 piece. The bottle will dry out in a year so between uses I run a layer or 2 of black electrical tape around the top.

And it comes in several colors. Next Xmas I'm doing the red and green thing :)

My sand is usually wet, when its dry my plant needs water. Can't decide whether sand acts as a mulch to retain moisture in the soil or as a wick to dry it out faster. I'm leaning towards a wick.

I found this tree on Palisade Ave Garfield. Had to be almost 30 feet tall. John was allergic to figs so I ate a bunch, nice taste, crunchy. He had 2 of the same tree. Couldn’t tell me much about it. I went back about 2 weeks later after several days of heavy rain. Good amount of splits. I’m still going to grow it this year and give it a try.  I found about 50 different trees this summer without hardy trying. Managed to get cuttings for about 20 of them. Some really tall trees.

I get fungus gnats every fall/winter/spring. About 2 months ago I had about 30-40 flying around at any given time. I started using sand to combat them. This only works if you also deny access to the drainage holes.  They will crawl right up the bottom and lay eggs. I put my planted cups into an identical sized cup to keep the suckers out of the bottom. Sand is a real PITA to use, gets all over everything especially when you tip the cup to check the roots. It also makes watering little more of a chore. Sometimes soil will mix with the sand so I replace the sand. The only thing I hate more than using sand is fungus gnats. Sometimes when you pull a cup out from its barrier cup a gnat will fly out. They are now completely under control. I see maybe 1 or 2 now and then. I boil my sand before use.

I’ve been growing my veggies in the basement every spring under lights for about 15 years and get gnats every year. About 5 years ago I tried the Dunks from Home Depot in the watering containers to combat them. Maybe I used too much because my plants ended up stunted. I'll never use them again. I bought the veggies that year.

I’ve had some pretty bad infestations and never noticed plant wilting.
