Subject: Famous Fig Wasp Spotted Today in Los Angeles Replies: 6
Posted By: akrouus Views: 247

I remember seeing them last summer on the leaves of my black jack, but this afternoon, unquestionably i confirmed the presence of the famous fig wasp in my backyard. they were on the surface of my soil in my yellow long neck container. I put a piece of white printer paper on the surface hoping they would hop or fly on, so that I could take a photo, but they wouldn't bite.

So does this mean a capri fig is located nearby? What is the maximum distance they can travel from a nearby capri fig tree? 1 mile, 5 miles?

I'd hate to have to cut it down or back if we had to do work in the house or something. Any opinions are appreciated.

always heard warnings of figs being planted close to structures. i wouldn't do it. its really a matter of timing, and when , not if. You may not see damage to the foundation in the first 15, 20 yrs, but it will eventually impact your foundation.

mac, do you guys have armstrong nurseries in your area? Every year, they have 4 ft and higher trees, including VdB last year. I just went to my local store and they had kadota, black jack, and another honey fig (forgot name) this week. i think they order from dave wilson. home depot and lowes occasionally have that size as well, but i recommend calling them first to see if they are in inventory. these two stores usually have mission, and others, like kadota, desert king, and brown turkey

i will guess confidently that varieties from the middle east like ajloni, sefwari, bayadi, hmari, khdari, suoadi, khurtmani, mwazi, aseli are tens of thousands years old.

so if its below 7, say 4.5, we add limestone to get it to the neutral PH of 7? the lower the number the more acidic right?

i got my Red Israel from KK via Harvey. it is a great fig. I told Harvey it was a keeper. It is the most productive of all my trees thus far, with the caveat that some of my other fig trees are still not validated or verified. The taste is not the sweetest, but the aroma and complexity are awesome.

As elin and harvey mentioned, the khurtmani (khortmani) is not Red Israel. This is guaranteed and validated and verified by family and friends who lived in Israel. It was an overwhelming consensus when they saw my ripened Red Israels - all agreed it was not khurtmani.  if you want to "view" the real Khurtmani (khortmani), Mr. Sami Kassoum occasionally has a picture of it on his ebay site. As Elin also verifies, its interior is a light beige color, with a tint/hint of red.

i agree
i like its shape; training like a tree is nicer to me than a bush... and it looks really nice as a tree near your house. eventually, it will be a beautiful shade tree giving fruit. much nicer than a multi-stem bush in my opinion

paul. i guess i haven't learned anything yet on this forum. what is a whip? the tree looks 10 to 15 years old, or more, from my amateur perspective. It was planted in 2011?

picture below from 1st year Lebanese Red plant, rooted late last year. It was my second time tasting a 'Trees of Joy' fig after Dark Portuguese.  It was a great figgy, berry taste! A keeper for sure!

By the way, for comparison, my wife liked the Dark Portuguese better, and I will probably agree with her, but just barely.

thank you guys. the sbayi has an amazing smell when i walk by it sometimes. it reminds me of the mid east when i visit. i can't wait and have a feeling it will be my favorite.

thank you for the thoughts and perspective Eli. Indeed, we have a lot in common in terms of desires. Are you in the mid east?
Also, my two sbayi trees do not (currently) have any signs of pink on the stems or leaves. they are about 1 year old trees. is there supposed to be pink continuously throughout growth cycle  or only at certain times during growth (i.e, spring, etc)?

lovely eli.
did you ever grow khurtmani or red israel as its known also. If so, how would you compare sbayi to khurtmani (red israel) since it is widely recognized as a more favored fig in Israel, where sbayi comes in second?

i have heard very good things on red Israel or khurtmani, especially since it is the top fig in Israel, followed by the sbayi. most who have actually tasted it in Israel/Palestine also give good reviews. can't wait for mine. thanks Harvey
