Dennis,

Let us know about the Scott's Black results.
Mine is a super fig, one of the most vigorous and tasty, very productive too.

Chris,

The leaf is a typical MtEtna. It one of the most reliable long fruiting figs for me.
If I choose to have only a few, it will be one of them.

I used the aluminum to cover the pots, worked well. I believe the aluminum pans would work in a similar way.
Good luck with this , please let us know on the results

Interesting question. Are all three Caprifig crops pollinated?
Cannot be, right? Since only the Profichi contains the viable pollen

As I mentioned above, the variety discussed is the

Thank you for the suggestions!
Yes, a danger of loosing a tree or two is there but I am not really worried about this.
The wild figs as a weed are practically everywhere and the city at some point will give up or run out of the resources :)

I live about 40 min from Culver City. I usually just drive through, now I have a reason to stop by. Thank you for a link.

jds,
I my case, it is not one of many that ripen, I would say 80% of the figs might get to the edible state.

Thank you, Francisco.
Very helpful, as usual.

As a side note, this might mean that shipping the profichis does need to be overnight since the wasps can survive months inside the rotted figs.

It is interesting that most of the caprifigs I am aware of, grow on the public streets that are cleaned at least once a month, there is very little chance the figs would stay under a tree for long. Still a mystery on my side.

Kiwibob,
This fig goes under the name Unknown Pastilliere, it is a Smyrna and is different from the Common Pastilliere fig you are referring to.
Sorry about the name confusion but it is what it is.

Sid,
I do not know if the wasp was active in September, but even if it was, the pollen was not available.
The profichi figs with pollen are only there in the Spring or early summer:
http://waynesword.palomar.edu/pljun99a.htm

It also seems that there would be a zero chance the wasps survived several months with the pollen still viable.

Yes, but the pollen is supposed to be available in the spring/early summer only.
There are no ripe caprifigs in the Fall

This happen last year and is puzzling me again.
I just collected a few ripe Unk. Pastilliere figs (Nov. 15th), it is a Smyrna and must be pollinated to ripen. The figlets appeared about 2 months ago, in September, way past the pollination season. Regardless of that , the seeds sink and sprout. Why???? How did the pollen get in and from where???
The photos below are from today.

Edit: sorry, I cannot post a photo . I am getting an error " Limit exceeded" for any size :(

1. They might but you have to take of 3 crops instead 1.
2. Between a half and 1 cherry sized depending on a variety.

A very nice large fig, not a berry tasting, very productive tree. The skin is edible but it was hardish for me because of the dry climate. Tastes like a mix of watermelon, peach, and strawberry.
At least 8/10, pollinated. The tree is in the ground.

Peter's honey would be a prolific honey addition. Atreano too.

Smith seems to be a good Adriatic / exotic berry choice that gets rave reviews and fruits early for a lot of people at least for an Adriatic berry. Adriatic JH is another one highly recommended.

Florea or Improved Celeste could be good early and hardy sugar varieties but lack flavor by most reports. I personally like Florea and the fact that it will fruit first. Hoping Improved Celeste's flavor improves on my young tree. Celeste would be a good sugar choice as well and a standard in the south.

Gino's black, Black Greek, MBVS, and other Mt Etnas are great if you want more dark berries.

Negronne, Nero 600M, and VDB are good Bordeaux berries if you wanted more of those and I think they taste different than RDB.

Don,
There are different Zingarellas floating around, one is a Mt Etna type and another from Richard Watts that looks like Grantham's Royal, it is not berry fig .
Not sure where the confusion started

It seems you would need an RdB or MBVS.
I can give you the cuttings but don't have a rooted plant and it is not enough time to root them .

A very important factor in the taste is pollination.
With it, many dark figs taste very close to each other and all become Black Madeiras :)

Yes, the summer cuttings root just fine. If they are green, you may need to provide extra humidity but shouldn't be a problem in general.

Squirrels, coons and possums are my eternal enemies.
So far, I am loosing. Only a fine metal cage will help for a 100% protections, with everything else, the animals figure out how to get around.
Stray cats help too, sometimes dogs.

Subject: Repotting or not for fruiting fig tree? Replies: 9
Posted By: greenfig Views: 227

I have a different experience uppotting with the fruit every time. You will do no harm and your figs will be bigger and better tasting . One important factor for figs as fruit is the moisture consistency which is hard to achieve in a small pot and large roots.
Basically, I would uppot it but try to disturb the roots a little only.
