Subject: "Up Potting A Root Riot Cube" Replies: 24

I used to use them and got great results with initial rooting, the problem came when up-potting... The sponge holds on and absorbs alot of water so I would lose most due to rot. If you try peeling the sponge off you run the risk of breaking roots... I stay away from these now...

Thanks Ryan, I hope to get a good handful of figs this year. It gave me like 3 last year and they weren't that great but as we all know, the older they get the better the fruit... I do remember it having that redish tint last year and now I'm wondering if it comes later in the season when fruiting. I have 2 airlayers from my VdB and are now both in 5gal pots and are the same exact hight, one has that tint and the other doesn't, go figure...

Here's the leaf pattern on my 2 year old Black Mission, no red tint though. I traded for this little tree last spring from a nice older lady who runs a small nursery near me and she swore it was Black Mission. I also have a small rooted cutting from a 100 year old BM but the leaves are too young to compare this year. Was able to get 2 good leaves in the pic.

Subject: What is your experience with fungus gnats using Coconut Choir as rooting medium? Replies: 16

So I only set up a few cuttings because I wanted to try my hand at grafting this year. These 3 cuttings are from the same mother tree, my Black Jack which is pretty vigorous, all roughly around the same diameter. The 2 on the sides are in damp coco coir and were put in 32oz deli cups on 12/25/15, the one in the middle was put in the same size cup but in old soil mix (lost a rooted cutting from last year and recycled the soil) but the thing is that I didn't do it until mid/late January 16. The 2 x-mas cuttings were washed and dipped in wax, the 3rd one was't even washed or dipped!!! I have noticed some spider mites but no gnats in the soil mix and no bugs at all with the coco coir and they are in the same humidity chamber.

Coco coir works great but liked I said, my only gripe is the weak roots. When time for up-potting, I use the same coco coir with the soil mix I choose for that rooted cutting. I don't really shake off the coir. What ever sticks, stays!!! I feel like the extra shock of completely new growing medium hurts its chances of surviving so I leave most of the coco.

One more detail, the middle cup has roots all around while the coco coir cuttings are only what you see...

Gnats are the worst, they do kill your chances at a higher rooting rate. My main gripe with coco coir is that no matter what variety I try rooting they have very thin and weak roots. I've tried plain water and also with light fertilizer and I get the same result. When the time comes to up-pot them is where I loose some.

Comparing coco coir rooting to sand, the roots are much thicker when rooting in sand or even in regular soil if they survive the rooting process.

What type of paint would that be, and what type might harm figs? (oil, latex or water based)???

In my short time in this new hobby of figs, I have noticed that VdB the SLOWEST and most sensitive at everything, rooting, airlayering and just overall slow grower... But you can't beat the tasty figs... I'm looking for a Vista to compare, I've read that Vista is a more vigorous grower...

Hey Blake... I get those on the citrus, but liked you I don't know what they're called... I use a water/fabric softener mix and spray down the tree, works well for other bugs too... Real light mix though, I usually just eyeball it to where the water turns slightly blueish...

This is the first year I have extra rooted cuttings and airlayers and have gifted them to family... Mostly Black Jack and VdB... I tried gifting to neighbors but been turned down because there is this "belief" that fig trees grow so fast and wild they cause more damage than good... Doesn't matter how hard I try to convince them that they are super controllable... Oh well, maybe family thinks the same way but don't have the heart to turn you down, haha...

No it doesn't matter if you peel them or not, couple cloves or the whole head. I usually do whole heads of garlic on the corners of my yard, just kinda break it up with my foot and drop them in about 6-8 inches deep. They don't like the strong odor. Now I on;y do the surounding parts of the yard where there is grass because they will sprout shoots and come up but the mower takes care of that... I'm thinking of having a couple areas this spring dedicated to garlic, maybe only like a foot squared off here and there to intensify the odor...

I've got a littie one who is gonna be roming the yard this spring so I can't have traps or spikes out where little mama will find them...

As wierd as it may sound, I've always had luck with garlic... I bury garlic cloves around the yard and it keeps them away, works every time...

I'd like to hear about your thoughts on earth worms in pots with young and older fig trees...
I noticed that some of my 1 gallon pots that sit on open dirt tend to be lighter in weight than pots sitting on concrete or patios away from open dirt, obviously from the worms eating up stuff... Is there a benefit??? Bad issues???

Black Jack has become one of our favorites. It's a 2 year old tree, and 1st year in ground. Now I've seen the difference of what putting a fig in ground does for the taste and production, big difference from last year.

I've noticed that my regular neighborhood trees are having an off season too.
This time last year I could stop almost daily on a particular tree and grap a couple figs,  I swung by the other day and I noticed the figs looked different.
First the size was way down, second the taste was just watery and bland, and from what the owner told me this tree is atleast 10 years old.
An older Black Mission also near me hasn't set any at all!!!
OT... All the stone fruit trees on my street had NADA going on this season.
I've got @ dozen avocados hanging from my 2 year old Hass, hopefully they'll hold on...

Igor, I was thinking the same thing until two weeks ago. Seemed like all my potted figs were stunned this summer, not very much growth, some didn't grow at all. My only in ground fig (Black Jack)did well and is still ripening figs. Anyways, in the past 2 weeks there has been a growth spurt on most of my potted figs and am seeing figlets. I'm not super experienced but the slow-to-no growth is very weird, something about this summer was off.

All the HD's in my area only carry 4 varieties, Brown Turkey, Black Mission, Kadota and Panache. I'm sure if you'd went back to see their stock on hand they'll probably have a green fig and most likely it'll be the same as yours. Your fig looks like my Kadota. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Hopefully someone will answer my question. A friend from work knows how much my wife and I love figs and he gave us a few. He really doesn't know anything about figs or the origin of the tree but I'm guessing it's a Brown Turkey. He picked about a dozen figs that weren't completely ripe but edible and I noticed a few had a brownish color on the inside, almost dry looking. Is this because they weren't ripe enough? Hopefully the pic has enough detail.

Hey Shawn. I was at a home and garden show this past weekend in Anaheim and Cal Tropical Fruit Tree Nursery had a booth there. Don't remember the name of the lady I spoke to but she had a couple Lamb Hass in 15gal pots for $85 but it was too big to stuff in the car. If I didn't have the wife and baby with me I would've stuffed that and a couple other trees in the car!!! Anyways, they're out of Vista, not too far from you I'm guessing. tropicalfruittrees.com. look'em up...

Blake, I see your point in different varieties but out here it seems everyone has an avocado but there is nothing like Hass for me, followed by Fuerte, which I have access to at my parents house down the street. That and my limited space is why I'm sticking to what's good, plus with so many knowns and unkowns around here, cross pollination isn't an issue...
