Thank you all for the sweet messages. It truly is a great feeling being a father. Strangely, I thought I'd be a bit nervous but I'm feeling so confident and ready for fatherhood, haha. Lets see how long it takes for her to turn me into jello at her command.

@Aaron, that would be such a great thing.

...but I definitely don't mind. I'd give this cutie pie my last fig, ha! I'd like to introduce baby Sofia too the forum. This is our first baby and we couldn't be happier. Mama and baby are doing great and we're on our way home. Anyways, I've been in this forum for only a few months but send like I know all of you, just wanted to share my joy... 20150208_105621.jpg

I was gifted a Black Jack last summer by my sister, I ended up with @ 8-9 figs that were pretty good. I'm looking forward to having more this summer as I hear that figs from any tree get better in the 2nd, 3rd years and beyond. I knew a little about figs before that from neighbor's trees but that being my first personal fig, it's a keeper. The reason I mention this is, propagating is HARD!!! I learned a lot since last summer and I have a few new babies that might fruit this summer but it's nice to have fruiting figs till my babies get big. Plus I learned how to air layer off my BJ and a couple others I bought. Like Greenfig said, any fig will be awesome with the wasp.

Subject: Gnats: when to call it an emergency? Replies: 28
Posted By: Elfarach Views: 789

Hello everyone. Brett, I'm in the same boat as you my friend. I was asking myself "how do gnats get in here so quick??? And when???!!!". I had one cutting that rooted well and was just beautiful, then all od a sudden it was producing gnats like that was it's job. I bought something from my local hydroponics place without chems, it worked well but left my cuttings drenched because it has to be applied with water. I decided to transplant a couple as a trial and as I went into my soil bag it was also full of gnats. WTF!? I thought, the bag was closed pretty good but they still got to it. That's when I realized I was using "infected soil", infected with gnats and their eggs, that's why I have gnats in my cuttings. So I made a batch of soil I had used on cuttings that rotted or died, put it in a plastic bag and zapped it in the microwave (when my wife wasn't looking) for about 3-4 mins, let it cool off and transplanted a few cuttings in the sterilized soil mix. I might get gnats again but it'll give the cuttings enough time to mature, hopefully. I did 6 cuttings in sterilized soil and put them together in a plastic bin and left 6 of the old cuttings that are rooted well but infected with dirty soil in another bin, it's only been a week but no sign of gnats in the new batch. Btw, my wife found out I used the microwave to heat up dirt and I've been banned from the house if I'm working in the yard now. Bought a microwave just for the garage and to sterilize my mixes in the future. Soooo, that's what I did and seems to be working well for me...

Welcome to the forum Heather. If the wood is also striped you do have a Panache. I bought a few fig trees like you and instead of prunning, I made a couple air layers. WAYYYYYY easier then rooting. I'm not planning to prune my babies till year 3 or so.

HAHA, now you're just showing off Brett. I have a few cuttings that seem to be stronger in the root dept then the stem dept, and vice-versa. I'm happier with stronger roots, seem healthier. What's in your mix?

Rafaelissimmo, I did the same thing as far as adding the MYCOR after up-potting. I did two methods, first just pouring the MYCOR into the hole for the rooted cutting and the second, mixing it into the soil. Killed two cuttings doing it the first method and the other cuttings are doing ok. I'll never just pour in the MYCOR again, I think it was too much for them. What do you think?

I'm about to make my first SWP or SIP, have heard different names for them. My local donut shop sells 4 gallon buckets for 1 dollar and $1.50 with a lid. These buckets are filled with jelly they use in all those delicious donuts we all love, AMIRIGHT!!! Anyways, most places probably throw them out or would sell them. So I thought I'd share this with all of you who might be looking for extra buckets, check your favorite donut shop. . I included a pic to show the difference in height compared to a 5 gallon bucket from HD, 2 of the smaller buckets are about an inch taller then the single HD bucket.

Aaron, let's see how natural I do with the next stage, HA...
Bob, the initial taking out and tugging at them and realizing this could be bad was the worst but like I said, after a couple shakes they came apart pretty easily. I'm hoping to have the same luck with the CH cuttings I got from you...

I think I broke off a small root, it wasn't too bad but I think it had to do with rooting in coco coir, couple shakes and most of it falls off. I personally have never tried rooting in perlite. I'll try a couple this spring just to compare.

Don't root two cuttings in the same cup!!! HAHA...
Took me a min to untangle them but surprised how nicely they rooted. These were extra small pieces that I trimmed off of longer cutting and couldn't just toss them away so I just threw them in a cup not really expecting much. Started rooting 10/30...

YES!!! Besides all the good you already heard I see one more thing, FILLER... This hobby of ours can get pricey with trying so many different soil mixtures, soil-less mixtures or what ever new combination we read about... I probably go through about 3-4 of the 3lb cans of coffee a year, might not be allot but if you can get extra from a coffee shop for free, that'd make a nice pile... That's how I see it...
