Greenfig,

Thanks for the info, looking forward to working on my new baby. I know I'll have to deal with atleast one rogue squirrel that's always in my fruit trees, this guys a monster too.

JdsFrance,

I do like the whole idea about starting from scratch, seeing it grow and pruning in your own style but just knowing it was a VDB and already grown a few years I was just imagining all the great figs I'd get, haha... Unless I come across another well known variety I must likely spend so much on a tree...

Thanks everyone. Yeah my dad always lets me know how I'm turning into him, haha... I'm thinking to myself, crazy how many people from so many different areas are members here, very cool though... Learning a lot about the new addition to my mini home orchard...

It was from Armstrong Gardens, not sure if they're nation wide but it's a pretty reputable nursery around here. Plus I had been eyeballing it for a couple months and picked from it once or twice, hahaha... It has three tags on it (all say VDB and dated) which I guess wouldn't mean anything if someone just put them on. And I also asked one of the clerks to look it up in their inventory. I didn't know what else to ask but I'm pretty confident it's the real deal...

For those who have a VDB, can you please tell me a little about the fruiting pattern, like when they start and end. Does it make a difference in location? Thanks again...

Well its sitting in my front yard now, it only took reading the first few replies for me to realize I shouldn't pass on it. I bought a small plum from them in early june and I noticed it then but the original price felt to much for me but I remember reading about VDB and knew it was rare to find it around here. Swung by today to pick up some seaweed mix for the wife and I saw it was still there. I talked the manager into giving me a discount since they've had it for so long. Will look it over closer tomorrow and see what I may be able to do with it. Bummer it's done fruiting though...

Thanks to all of you for the quick response, made my decision way easier...

Had these in water for about 3 weeks and showed signs of rooting, as soon as I put them in soil they busted out with green. I might have just had beginners luck with these.

Was trying different methods of rooting and in water was the only I was able to get them to show signs of rooting. I think I know my mistakes with trying to root them in baggies or in moss and will try those methods again next spring. One thing that did surprise me was how quick they would rot in  moss (too wet) but they looked great in water, go figure... These cuttings are from a neighbor and decided to give the water method another try but this time they grew fungus. They were the last couple cutting I was gonna try to root, wanted to try air layering next and started one last week. I wanted to get some practice in just incase I ever find some nice fig cuttings.

So I noticed this fuzzy fungus on a couple cuttings I have in water. Are they still ok to hold on to? Should I wash them off? Suggestions please... Thanks...

Good morning forum... My name is Simon, I live in So. Cal(El Monte, SGV.) with my wife of 12 years.
As a kid growing up I never got why my dad had so many fruit trees in the yard, I hated the extra work it gave me with watering and raking up leaves. I would curse all fruit trees and vowed never to have any as an adult. Hahaha... He had everything from citrus to avocados, cactus to a small mexican cherry tree, mangos to guayabas, but his prized possession was a GUAMICHIL tree(which he smuggled in 30 years ago) a prickly mesquite type of tree that would give these pod type of fruit that would curve like a pig's tail. Guamuchil is a bit more common now but 25 years ago there were people always knocking on the door asking about it. He even had a fig which I didn't like. Hahaha, like I said I didn't get it.

Fast forward to 25... I fortunately was able to buy a home, it had one avocado and a guayaba tree. Hmmmm, my first thought was hacking them down. My dad talked me out of it and pruned the hell out of them and said to give them a shot to work for their spot. Unfortunately the avocado was right on the property line and had to come down for a wall, the guayabe followed shortly to make room for a back patio cover. As soon as the guyaba tree was gone I did notice how barron the yard looked, no more natural shade, it was a big tree. The house had some bushes and roses but I wasn't happy at the work I had to put into them and I felt like the reward of just having a nice looking bush wasn't enough. I began to understand the feeling my dad would get out of picking something from the tree or bush...

I'm sure you guys know what comes next, hahaha. I went out and bought an avocado and an orange tree. Some thing about caring for them when they were small triggered something inside me. Now I have limes, lemons, nectarines, apricots, I even have a small GUAMUCHIL from my dad's mother tree, hahaha...

Couple of years ago I was helping out an older neighbor in his yard and he handed me this familiar looking fruit that I knew I didn't like, a fig. I didn't remember why I didn't like it, I just knew my dad had one and it was more work for me, hahaha. Anyways, this fig was awesome, really sweet. He sent me home with some extra and my wife loved them also. So the next couple of summers I would get a nice batch from him and man were they delicious. So after he taught me about how he cares for his fig tree I deceided to try to have my own, so early this summer I bought my first fig tree, a Black Jack followed by a brown turkey and a Kadota. Those are the basic varieties my local homedepot carries. I started reading up on fog and man was I overwhelmed at all the info I found, had no idea how many different varities there are...

Tried rooting some cuttings from a few mystery figs from the neighborhood that look different from what I have and I seem to have had some luck with them. I bought a few live figs from ebay last month, this was before I found this forum, hopefully they're true to what they told me they are and I didn't get taken for a ride.

So that's my story and I'm sticking to it, hahaha. I learned so much already from being on this forum for one week and I hope my dumb questions don't get on your nerves. And I do have a lot of questions...

I currently have Brown Turkey, Kadota, and Black Jack that I have had some fruit from and those little live figs I bought from ebay are: Violet de Bordeaux, Lattarula, LSU purple, Desert King, Olympian and a Green Ischia. Like I said, I hope I wasn't dooped, hahaha...

Black Jack was my very first buy a few months ago from a Home Depot here in So. Cal, I'm guessing it's it's first year bearing fruit, 3 to date and have been pretty big and tasty. Has two more in it, going they'll ripen soon. Out of eagerness I think I picked them a few days too soon, haha. I will try to hold off on there's last two. Definitely gonna try to root some cuttings from this one...

There's have been in water for about 3 weeks. What can you guys tell me? I change the water out every 4-5 days and have been using rooting hormone every other time I've changed water. Soil ready?

Phil...
I think that was mistake with the baggie technique, too damp... Will definitely try again next year though...

Jdsfrance...
The rooting hormone was just out of habit I guess, and I know what you mean on the ornamental trees. Few of those in the neighborhood but mostly citrus and avocado that people to have from a seed... I have citrus and avocados but they are grafted so they do bear fruit... I learned to be patient with those so I know I'll eventually get going on these figs. I'll definitely keep an eye on the progress of cuttings from older or newer branches.

A little side note on mystery figs: about a month ago on a trip to Homedepot, they had one lonely fig tree with no tags on the tree itself or the pot. No visible signs of fruit but it looked real healthy, talked the young manager into a 50% discount cause I figured I wouldn't know what variety it would be till next summer. To my surprise it sprung a lonely fig and it looks like I'll know what my mystery fig will be by the end of this month, hahaha. Being it was from Homedepot, most likely will be a BT or Kadota since they don't carry a huge variety. It has a short stem just like another kadota I have so I think that's what it might be.

Thanks guys... I've had the worst luck trying to root cuttings, have tried in a bag, plastic shoe box in peat moss, straight into a soil/perlite mix and nothing. My wife says I just wanted them to root SO BAD I jinxed myself. anyways, my last attempt (out of boredom) was just dropping the cuttings into a plastic water bottle with a little rooting hormone I use for my plumerias. BOOM, I got the first signs of rooting action within 5 days. I immediately drop in 3 mistery cuttings from 3 of my neighbors who have fig trees (one of which I'm almost certain it's a brown turkey, the other 2 are green with red flesh but definitely different varieties). I started with 3 cuttings from the same branch of each fig and noticed that the bottom that the bottom portion has the best signs of rooting, center cut then the tip showing the slowest action...

Newbie here in So Cal... I've noticed when reading a few threads that people prefer different parts of a branch used for cuttings. Is there a real difference in using the bottom part of a branch as opposed to tip cutting or even center cuttings???
