Annually, I cut back my trees pretty hard to store them in a single garage bay. My namesake shares the other bay… I have to cut them back to get them all in there. This year I am going to offer up the cuttings on the forum. I am going to make a photo album that should have most of what I have to offer in there. It will be a work in progress, so ask me if you don’t see something and I’ll let you know if I have a picture. Cuttings will be at least 6 inches with three nodes, most will larger 8-9 inches and at least pencil thick. Some are very thick. I will let you know what is available. Some varieties are more limited then others. I will try to respond as quickly as possible to all PMs, please be patient. The price is per cutting. PM for details.
Shipping is priority mail $6.50 flat rate envelope for 1-15 cuttings. $13.50 medium flat rate box is for 15 or more cuttings. No international shipping only continenal USA.

Just like everyone else's my trees are slowing making there way into winter storage. The big ones are getting a pretty good trimming to fit in the garage so I would like to try to follow the lead of others and offer out a variety pack of cuttings that would be good for the members just getting into the hobby. I am asking $30, plus 7$ For priority mail shipping in a flat rate envelope. Each package would be two cuttings of each variety with at least three nodes and at least pencil thick. Otherwise, I will let you know what I have. If I run out of a variety I will see what I can do. I will update if and when I run out. I would also mention that although I have not seen any FMV in these trees. They have been great growers and survives many all the cold winters thrown at them so far. I can not guarantee they have not been exposed. The offer is only good for shipping within the USA accept California. PM me for details or any questions... Ok, finally after years of having the tree. killing it to the soil line bring it back and every other mistake, I finally have some perfectly ripe figs and can take some pictures. This is a fig I got from my wife's grandfather he got it from another Italian in Trenton NJ in the late 50s. It was one tree out of 11 that he had, hence the number. Most turned out to be Kadotas or Brown turkey type figs. Only the tree that he has had either got 60 years ago are great figs. This is one of them. It seems to be in the Sicilian family of large figs like sals corleone, but the pulp is darker, the skin color is different and it tastes way better. It seems to be more productive as well. I'm debating referring to it as his name instead of his initials. Calogero Dark.

I remember it coming up periodically about lyndhurst white and latarolla possibly being the same. I have not seen any comparisons with pictures. I wish I could have had them side by side, but finding the ripe lyndhurst was a surprise the next day. From what I see they are the same. The leaves and fruit appear the same, and the same variations. They also taste the same to me. There are pictures below. Also, both trees are from very good sources.

Does anyone else have this fig or know if it was every identified? It was an Italian unknown that was passed out on garden web about 6-7 years ago. I don't know who many people got. Its a good fig and productive, maybe a bit small. Any info from anyone who still has this tree is appreciated. I linked the original topics below.

Ok, I have a couple of Bills Figs SIPs. I haven't used them in a few years and I am going to set them up again instead. I originally used the soils he uses and the pot is HEAVY. I plan to keep them on my deck and I don't want to kill myself. I have had discussions in the past with other members and I see a lot of people using peat based miss with SIPs. I have been using Farfard 52 for all my trees the last few seasons and I usually won't add anything and its been working out good. So, any last minute recommendations for something better then Farfard 52 that is easy to come by, anything I could add to the 52 to help? Will it be good for a few seasons? Keep in mind I would like them to be a as light as reasonably possible without water in the bottom...

Ok, there has been some discussion in the past on these and some varying opinions. I would like to plant one or two trees on the south side of my house. It's a newer house and the basement is block(cinder?). I don't beleive fig roots are that invasive and I have seen plenty of trees planted very close to houses and walls and I havnt heard of Damage, but I'd like to be safe and not have issues or have big tree right on the house if it ever got that big. I'd hate to have to cut it down or back if we had to do work in the house or something. Any opinions are appreciated.

Now that spring is approching and we are all thinking about this years growing season. I'm starting to think about what I am going to do differently with my new property. Last year I definetly had a mosquito issue. I noticed this even at my old house, which was not as bad, but the same thing. Mosquitos seem to love hanging out in my fig trees. I ended up having most of my trees clumped on and around the deck in the back, so it made a nice little shady canopy for them, but it was to the point that I would get eaten alive every time I had to water. We didn't even spend any time outside since we were busy with the house. This year I would like to enjoy the yard a little more, but not instantly swarmed. Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions on mosquito control? I was debating spraying the yard, but I don't want to spray my figs or future garden.

A few years ago I offered out figs that I collected from my wife's grandfather. I just labeled them CM 2-10. I sent them out to a lot of people. I don't know how often most of the members post or visit anymore, but I wanted to start a topic to see what results people had and what they think. I have to say most of them turned out to be nothing special, but there seem to be one or two winners.
My results so far:

Cm 2 California brown turkey/ black Genoa.
Cm 3 died and had to start over no figs for me yet, but from one source it was a good white fig.
Cm 4 turned out to be the same as cm 2
Cm 5 still no figs well ripened figs yet after some bad weather years.
Cm 7 excellent dark fig decent cold hardiness possibly cm 5 is the same.
Cm 8 turned out to be a kadota/ dottato
Cm 9 turned out to be a peters honey type.
Cm 10 was also a kadota type fig.

Here is the original topic.

Has anyone ever kept figs in public storage or anything like that? I usually keep my figs in my detached concrete garage. It gets very cold in there and I hardly every provide a heat source. all my decent sized and larger trees survived this past winter. I only really lost one tiny tree and a few that were weaker died back, but that was it. Now it looks like we are selling out home and may be displaced for who knows how long. I can probably keep them here until some time in December early January. Then they may will need to find a temporary home. Do you think a public storage facility, like one of those outside not climate controlled units would be ok? They would be in total darkness, which should be ok. OR does anyone else have any ideas or experiences moving and relocated your trees/plants?

These varieties where introduced a few seasons ago now. I haven't seen much about them since then. I finally got Some fruit this year. I'm curious to hear feedback on these two. Baskinta purple is definetely a Brunswick type fig. I only got two figs from this one. It had a large open eye and I had to pick it early because of squirrels. It seemed to be sweeter and have a better flavor then my in ground Brunswick, nbut appears identical. I didn't get any fruit from Bruswick this year to compare. As for Baskinta brown a few people in past topics say it is a Celeste type. It definetely has a Celeste taste to me and looks Celeste like. Any input is appreciated.

I picked up this fig from my coworkers father. This is the first year I am getting any fruit from it. The figs look a little small since the tree is young. All my coworker knows is he got the fig from a catalog 20 or so years ago. I feel like it may be a mission fig. The pictures of the fruit are not totally ripe, but the squirrels are taking everything so I had to pic them early just to have some chance of figuring out what they are. Any opinions are appreciated.

This was a picture of a fig she brought from his tree last year, but I didn't get a chance to get a picture of the inside.

I picked up this fig three years ago and it finally fruited and I am hoping to get some feedback from anyone else who picked up this tree at the time. It was introduced by a member who hasn't posted since this tree was offered out as a trade. Myself and another another member who picked up this tree that is sourced back to the same person both believe this tree the tree is a Celeste or Celeste variant in both taste and appearance. Now, I don't know if this is what an actual BC#93 is or if this person didn't know what they had or if they were straight up scamming. Here is Bellaclare's description of the fig. A popular Neopolitan fig from Naples, Italy. Also called Fico Piccolino. Small to medium purple-black, blood red center. This doesn't seem to match what I have. If anyone else out there has this tree let me know what you think.

This is a a dark fig that I picked up last year. I'm not sure of the origin probably Italian. The figs are all ripening small. The person I got it from and has had figs form it says they are small figs, but these seem pretty small. I have been seeing a lot of figs on other trees ripening smaller this year, so I think they should be a little larger. I feel like there is some resembelence to Mt. etna type figs. Ok, it looks like my wife and I are going to try to move this summer. I have four unground trees, they are not super big, so it should be as bad. They have only been in found 3-4 years. I think in an ideal situation I would take cuttings or air layer them since three of them are not uncommon trees. The problem is this winter killed them basically to the ground. I have seen some green under the bark a few inches off the ground, but no signs of life so far So, I figure since the trees will look half dead anyway, maybe I should try to dig them out. If I do this I figure I will cut back all the dead branches then dig around basically the circumference of the mulch and go down as deep as I can. Is this a bad idea considering how badly they were damaged this past winter. Does it matter? How much root do I need to get? I figure I will put them in a 15g or larger if need be pot with 5-1-1 mix until we have a new house. What do you guys think?

Last year was the first year I was using a good mix for every tree and had plenty of pots to keep up with the growing trees. So I ended up with a lot of trees in 10,15 and 25 gallon pots by the end if the season. I was up potting at various points during the summer, so some trees were not in a 15 or 25 all season long.
The tree in the pictures was in a 15 all season long. I have seen people mention in many topics that 15 is there final pot size or that a tree should be able to stay in a 15 gallon pot for two seasons. This tree doesn't look like it's totally root bound, but don't know if I would get a whole other season out of it with issues. The tree isn't even as large as iI have seen some in this size pot. This isn't the only tree I have like this after one season. If I can only get 1 season from a 15 then what will I get from a 25? I was really hoping to get at least 3 seasons from a 25g. What do you guys think? I don't think I'm doing anything wrong since the trees are growing nicely, but do I let trees like this stay a whole second season? How are you guys getting two season or more out of a 15g pot?

It seems like all of my larger trees are having problems. I bare rooted and did a little root work on thie tree well over a month ago. It has been outside for atleast 3 weeks the tree was fine. The temps have not been bad especially in the last few days. I go out today and there is a big split at the base of the trunk. The tree seemed ok, previous to to this I could see little buds coming out from the truck and branches. Can this be attributed to over watering during the winter? Should I try to do anything for this or just let it go and see?

Subject: winter damage questions Replies: 10

This past winter was the second winter I stored trees in my detached unheated garage. two winters ago it was very mild and not a great test. Everything survived with no damage. This past winter I stored a lot more trees of all sizes. It was a little colder overall and we had decent cold snap. A few times I turned on heaters in the garage to bring the temps up a bit short term, which maybe caused issues, I don't know... I re-potted, up-potted and root pruned all my trees over the past few weeks and put them outside. What I am seeing now is that my larger trees have some significant die-back and I am wondering if some are going to make it. Some are budding and look like they will make it. What is interesting to me is that the small trees are all fine. Most are breaking bud or swelling. They were all pretty much in the same place. I scratched a little bark and it looks alive, but but I'm not seeing good signs on the outside. I am also seeing some splits in the wood around branches on a few trees. I know this topic came up a few weeks ago and maybe I watered to much over the winter.
I know people store trees with no issues in similar situations and colder climates. If these trees come back I want to make sure this doesn't happen and the small trees I hope will be larger this year I don't want to set back.
What I think happened is that the larger trees that seem to have the issues are trees that rooted into the ground last year early on and I could not get them up until fall when I just cut the roots. These trees ended up getting stuck in pretty small pots relative to the sizes they ended up growing to because they got roots in the ground. When I cut them up I stored them in these pots. When I repotted them they really did not have a lot or root mass. I tried not to take off to much. Could that be the issue? Maybe they didn't have enough root mass to store energy or now they don't have enough to sustain the top growth. When I pruned the roots they seemed to be a live. It has really only been the past few weeks that I can see what branches are dead.

I am am repotting and root pruning. I am starting to accumulate a lot of old mix that still has good qualities. I am trying to get in to good habits. i would like to reuse it by remixing it with the fresh mix. I have read the common methods for sterilizing. i am not putting it in the oven or the microwave. So that leaves me with boiling water and solarizing it. The mix is pine bark, promix and perlite. I'm leaning towards the boiling water method since it will be faster. Will this method work with this type of mix? If I go the solar route. The mix is currently in black contractor clean up bags. I do have clear plastic bags also, Can I just leave them in the black bags in the sun for 6 weeks that thats it? Six weeks was recommended for cooler weather. Is there another method? If the boiling water method is ok. Can I just dump a pot of boiling water into the bags?

Anyone in the Northeast? What makes me nervous about them is that the soil temp triggers the release instead of watering. It seems like there is a bit more calculate involved in figuring out how much to use given the area of the country you live in and length of time you want to fertalize. If I am undertanding the instructions you just add more in cooler climates to compensate for the soil temp being cooler. Subject: Up pot a larger tree now or wait? Replies: 6

I have a few trees that seem very large for the size pot (3 gallon) they are in. They rooted into the ground mid summer and I left them. Now they are dormant. I cut the roots and I have them in a detached unheated garage now, but I'm wondering if they would do better in a larger pot. I'm sure the pot they are in is all roots. My thinking would be if I put them in a larger pot now they will have a little more insulation when it gets colder and retain moisture a little better. Or should I just wait until early spring as usual?

All this talk about the storm I'm thinking maybe I better play it safe. I don't think anything will fly away or be washed out where I'm at I can see wind damage breaking branches... I have a bunch of mostly 2nd and third year trees that have rooted into the ground over the summer. I was going to leave them until they go totally dormant then cut the roots. Would it hurt them to cut the roots now to move them inside until the storm passes? Most of them still have atleast half thier leaves and are not really dormant yet.

I picked up a Battaglia and Verte last year as one year old trees. I finally got some ripe fruit. From what I can see the what I have as a Battaglia is not correct. All the pictures I found have a deep red interior. The Verte looks correct to pictures that I have seen and it had a jam taste that I have read about. Can anyone confirm the Verte looks correct and maybe guess what this other fig is?

Battaglia?

Verte

It's a little late in the season to find this out, but after observing a full season and developing a system for taking care of my trees I'm wondering if this is working as well as it should. I used MG about once a week to supliment the slow release fertilizer I used. I would water them withthe MG applicator you hook up to the hose, now I'm wondering if the applicator mixes it to weak? Does anyone use the MG feeder? My only evidence is that of this is when I mix up MG in a jug the water is clearly blue. When I fill up a jug with water from the feeder it is not really that blue colored.
