Subject: Planting a fig tree near the house(foundation) Replies: 17
Posted By: 71GTO Views: 630

Ok, there has been some discussion in the past on these and some varying opinions. I would like to plant one or two trees on the south side of my house. It's a newer house and the basement is block(cinder?). I don't beleive fig roots are that invasive and I have seen plenty of trees planted very close to houses and walls and I havnt heard of Damage, but I'd like to be safe and not have issues or have big tree right on the house if it ever got that big. I'd hate to have to cut it down or back if we had to do work in the house or something. Any opinions are appreciated.

We hang it in the garage until it gets warmer out then around May/June they go into the basement where its still cool. At that point they are almost done.
Here they are in the basement under salt

Also, I do plan to plant some plants that deter mosquitos, but the property still needs work before I can landscape.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try watering with that stuff or something if that nature. Im sure that was one of the culprits last year. I don't know how I or my neighbors would feel about trying to attract bats in.... I've have some good ideas now. I think a few things should take help.

Now that spring is approching and we are all thinking about this years growing season. I'm starting to think about what I am going to do differently with my new property. Last year I definetly had a mosquito issue. I noticed this even at my old house, which was not as bad, but the same thing. Mosquitos seem to love hanging out in my fig trees. I ended up having most of my trees clumped on and around the deck in the back, so it made a nice little shady canopy for them, but it was to the point that I would get eaten alive every time I had to water. We didn't even spend any time outside since we were busy with the house. This year I would like to enjoy the yard a little more, but not instantly swarmed. Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions on mosquito control? I was debating spraying the yard, but I don't want to spray my figs or future garden.

My experience in NJ is she. I've kept them really close together because I had no choice they grow up high or in in any direction they can get sun more and not always in a nice form. The branches that were shaded die or drop thier leaves and didn't grow. Keep in mind these were a lot of trees very close together, but sometimes ther isn't much you can do if you don't have the space to spread them out.

Thanks guys! I really want to plant one at some point soon. You let them soften in the tree? My wifes grandparents have a tree and I think they pull them off hard and keep them in a dark closet or paper bag until they are soft. Is that right? Is it best to let them tree ripen?

Do you need to spray persimmons or do any thing special for them?

Subject: Too cold to leave outside tonight? Replies: 21

One cold night won't kill your trees. I've been moving my trees in regardless since it's that time of year anyway, but I left one of my big trees outside since I need the hand truck to move it and I was tired. One cold night shouldn't hurt it in fact some long time members liked to leave them out for one or two freezes to make sure they would go dormant. It will probably zap your leaves though. My leaves have been gone for a while now.

Just like everyone else's my trees are slowing making there way into winter storage. The big ones are getting a pretty good trimming to fit in the new home so I would like to try to follow the lead of others and offer out a variety pack of cuttings that would be good for the members just getting into the hobby. I am asking $30 including priority mail shipping in a flat rate envelope. Each package would be two cuttings of each variety with at least three nodes and at least pencil thick. Otherwise I will let you know what I have. If I run out of a variety I will see if I can replace it with something else. I will update if and when I run out. I would also mention that although I have not seen any FMV in these trees. They have been great growers and survives many all the cold winters thrown at them so far. I can not guarantee they have not been exposed. The offer is only good for shipping within the USA accept California. PM me for details or any questions... I will try to respond as soon as I can and let you know where I'm at.
The variety are:
Marseilles Black VS
Hardy Chicago Low
Gino's Black
Violette De Bordeaux  Low
Lyndhurst White Low
Verdone Low
Pappa Jon Gone will replace with another variety. Check with me.

I'm in NJ a little south of you and I've kept my trees in a detached garage and have never had much of an issue. It regularly went down into the teens. I would think in your attached garage it should be ok. Maybe just keep it way near he back walk away from the outside doors.

Thanks guys. I think there is a difference between the Sicilian Red that had been around a long time and the Red Sicilan from Marius.

That's what I figured... I have had other strains of Sicilian red and I have a small actual Sicilian red. Just like to get some opinions. It's definetly a great gig and had been grown in ground in a good spot but with no protection for a long time. I haven't been back to see how the tree made out the last two horrible winters...

Thanks, I would guess southern Italy or Sicily. Long story short my wife's grandfather who is Sicilian bought this fig from another Italian who had a backyard nursery in the late 50s early 60s.

This topic was from last fall. I had them in storage all winter and in my case the trees survived better then ever. Moving isn't great at any age, unless you have plenty of money for movers and storage or not much stuff.... Trying getting engine blocks, fig trees, tool chest, random heavy crap in a storage unit pretty much by yourself. The only good thing I can say is that I've had to learn to work a bit smarter and also that I need less junk in my life.

It was a 10x30 I had a car and all my garage stuff in there it was full, but not stacked to the ceiling. I'm sure it helped to have that much stuff in there.

No, the climate controlled units are two warm. It was just a regular outside unit. There was insulation board in between the walls and ceiling. I opened it up once when it was really cold out and it was warmer in there for sure. The sun beating on the roofs warm them. I didn't loose a single tree in there.

A few years ago I offered out figs that I collected from my wife's grandfather. I just labeled them CM 2-10. I sent them out to a lot of people. I don't know how often most of the members post or visit anymore, but I wanted to start a topic to see what results people had and what they think. I have to say most of them turned out to be nothing special, but there seem to be one or two winners.
My results so far:

Cm 2 California brown turkey/ black Genoa.
Cm 3 died and had to start over no figs for me yet, but from one source it was a good white fig.
Cm 4 turned out to be the same as cm 2
Cm 5 still no figs well ripened figs yet after some bad weather years.
Cm 7 excellent dark fig decent cold hardiness possibly cm 5 is the same.
Cm 8 turned out to be a kadota/ dottato
Cm 9 turned out to be a peters honey type.
Cm 10 was also a kadota type fig.

Here is the original topic.

Hopefully, this was a one time thing. We closed on the sale of our home early January and our new house is still a work in progress... These units are not that air tight. The only thing that I wish I could have done more was get into the unit with some water for them, but it was packed so tight I couldn't get in there until a few weeks ago.

All my trees are out of the storage unit. I think they all made it. It was a pretty bad winter. They were in there with no heat or light for months. I see some buds swelling now, but I'm guessing Some damage may show up as it warms up.
