Todd, Welcome!  I jumped into this not long ago trying to find anything and everything I could get my hands on cuttings wise.  I still get what I can but the ones I keep will be the ones that truly have a background or story so I completely understand where you are coming from on this and wish you the best of luck with it.  Paradisio seems to have a decent story that comes along with it.

The photo came from here http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/jolly-tiger-fig-mystery-7478121   This is the only reference to that photo in the Google image search.  This would be my guess and im pretty confident in it.

Thank you!  And @Ross I appreciate your ingredients list, please dont take me mentioning mine as being closed minded.  I was simply using what I had on hand from growing this past summers garden.  Im 100% open to amending or creating a new mix for fix rooting / growing.  So I appreciate it.  I just wanted to make sure my message didnt come across as "this is how im doing it, and how im going to continue doing it." because thats now how it was meant.  Im a sponge trying soak up the info and figure it all out is all :)

Also I buy my Perlite by the 4CuFt bags at a time so I have plenty on hand, I started trying to root in only perlite but then I figured it was a bad thing and started to use my mix.  I root in horizontal bins with the cuttings buried under 2" of mix on top of 2" of mix.  I pull them out when I can see roots on the bottom or the top.  I can swap this to perlite I guess since its not really the nutrients they are after anyhow.

When you get your Black Mission fig and get them growing it will be some of the best Jam you've had.  We made a good amount of it a few months ago from figs we got off someones tree.  Black Mission has such a great color and the Peters Honey Figs are amazingly sweet in jam as well.  If I can get some more Black Mission fig cuttings I will let you know and help knock one off your wishlist.  All the cuttings I grabbed are rooting right now.

My mix from the start has been a variation of what I use for my Grow bag garden mix.

The grow bag garden mix is setup for wicking and is as follows:
2 five gallon buckets full peat moss
1 five gallon bucket well rotted horse manure or compost or worm castings
1 and 1/2 cup garden lime
1 large coffee can full of perlite
1 handful of epsom salts

However I have upped the perlite to about 50% of the mixture, lowered the composted horse manure to 1 gallon and have dropped the garden lime since I was unsure what PH figs liked.  All of my cuttings seem to be doing well in this mixture right now.  I had read the other day that equal parts peat, sand, perlite, was where I wanted to be so I bought sand to try it and obviously that didnt go well.

I appreciate the explanation on the antimicrobial and warding off pests, that was something I hadnt known.

Im still relying on their will to live, to outweigh my mistakes :)   As for the video, the ones I just had in the sand mix and removed from the sand mix were straight out of a vertical rooting container.  One had maybe 12 1.5" roots and the other had about 20 2" roots.  Definitely not a rooting system yet.  I successfully took them out and moved them into a different mix, losing only 5-10% of the roots on each.  I think I got lucky.

Ross, most definitely Home Depots best play sand :(   If I get adventurous I may see what I can do to get them out of that mix and into something else.  They are larger branches that I typically have been trying to root (about 12-15" with a Y) so they went straight into 1 Gallon containers of this heavy mix.  Im just excited to be screwing everything up that I can, so I am learning more lessons than most :)  Thank you, I will be on the lookout for other sand.

The other question I forgot to add. I'm building a green house and obviously rooting and growing these cuttings when they should be dormant. How does this effect their first season of growth dies it mess them up or do they just adjust once in pots or in ground? I assume I won't really get any real fruit in year 1 from these cuttings but I can't wrap my mind around will they be 3 months off their normal cycle or does it just elongate the growing period. This is likely the stupidest of the bunch but I'm half asleep so I am adding it :) thank you Ross for adding to the answers.

I read a local gov article that said 1 part sand 1 part perlite and 1 part peat. I up potted 2 in that tonight and it seemed really heavy. Well keep researching the mix piece.

I became the proud father of my first fig cutting on 10/19/15 and since then my mailbox has been spitting out more left and right.  So while working through the learning curve I have ended up having a bunch of what for lack of a better phrase would be "Stupid Questions" that I am having trouble finding answers for.  Ive read the sticky posts, ive read the entire list of definitions etc etc.  So here goes, maybe some of you might chime in with some answers, and maybe it might help others that have similar questions.  Thanks in advance :)

1. Roots, does rooting need to take place in total darkness? Is this one of the biggest keys to getting bright while healthy looking roots?

2. When I see photos on facebook groups of rooted figs for sale in other countries that look incredibly healthy they are packed in BLACK looking fine dirt.  They all look so healthy and theres no visible perlite, no sandy grit etc, is this just compost?  Is a mix of perlite, peat, and sand really the best medium to root / start growing in?

3. At what point do figs really need to be up potted? From everything ive read it seems like figs like to be a little bit root bound so I dont want to get them into a bigger pot before they need to be. (going from a clear solo cup to a 1 gallon pot)

4. Trees I see at home depot and also for sale on peoples sites all seem to be perfectly straight vertically... do I need to trim and train these cuttings to grow straight up and have no branches?  Right now I have cuttings that are almost all branching, do I let them grow or cut / shape now?

Aporto, that is what im currently doing.  However I imagine there needs to be a very fine balance between watering and then adding the humidity again which could easily and quickly cause an overwatering issue.  Part of me wants to cut off most of the leaves surface area until they have weened off.  The other part that makes this harder for me is im doing it with ALL of my cuttings so trial and error is a lot more scary when its all or nothing and its not just 1 tree :)

Thats awesome and great that it was saved.  Someone with a Brown Turkey in town posted she was selling figs a couple months back.  I ended up meeting her and it turns out she bought a house with a tree in the back yard having no clue what it was.  The tree has to be 75-80ft wide and 40 feet tall.  Im not a fan of brown turkey figs but im sure I will help her prune it and get some cuttings.

Potting mix vs potting soil are 2 different things. My potting mix that I use for vegetable gardens in wicking bags is about 25% perlite, 60% peat, 10% well composted manure and then < 5% garden lime and Epsom salt. I mix by volume so % are guesses. I've just adopted that mix for starting these figs. I dropped the lime and Epsom salt, upped the perlite for better draining and less wicking and am not using much of any compost. Really I'm just using what I have. I use the same upped mix in my cups so 40%ish perlite and the rest is peat. I don't think the mixture is as important as the fact that it's well draining and airy. That's what the perlite is for. I hope this helps. I'm currently rooting roses in the same mix.

You can build a smaller 1 or 2 panel setup on top of your trees, you dont need a tarp as a base, I just put one there for my application.

Try Goodwill, Re-Store, or any of the salvation armys, you can get strands of lights really cheaply!  I found 100ft strands last week for $4 a strand at a local Re-Store.  They are LED and dont give off as much heat as the older style christmas lights but they are also less likely to have bulbs breaking if you go the xmas light route.

This is the beginnings of my 7x7x15 greenhouse.  Its just 16'x5' cattle panels.  Was very easy to setup. Might be a tad low for trees but you could go narrower and get more height out of it.  $20 a panel I believe it was.  Im going to heat it with a radiant heat oil heater in the evenings and some solar heating methods.  For the cost, im happy with how its turning out.  Im in NC so the winters arent that bad but I think the cattle panel would hold up to snow.

I have also just used a short strand of led christmas lights under a seed tray as well.  I have 2 sets of solar powered rope lights from Harbor Freight that im going to use to heat some seed trays in my greenhouse.  It seems like a good setup if you insulate it so the heat doesnt dissipate too quickly

Weening to ambient is my current battle.  The biggest reason I went the way I chose to is sheer volume.  I dove in head first from 0 cuttings to 150 cuttings in a week.

Sure, the reason I went this route is because its incredibly simply.  I tend to over complicate things, so I started trying to do it in a glass of water, then I started to do them sticking straight up in perlite, but was worried about the roots so I then started doing them this way and had a lot of success with it and its so easy.  Doing them just stuck into plastic cups of mix and then placed in a taller bin to seal in moisture is how I will do them in the future I think.  No risk of breaking roots that way since you arent moving them.  You want to talk about nerve wracking, wait til roots gets too long on you (3-4 inches) and you are trying to bury them in a cup without breaking them.

Dont cut deep into the fig wood like I did on this one, this was one of my first rooting attempts, I stuck it in mix, outside and it didnt take.  So I brought it inside to try it again and its rooting, you want to just slightly take away the outside bark exposing the green underneath.  This one could rot on me because of the slices I made but its the only 1 I have rooting to show you haha.

I am very new to all of this but if you want my suggestion and its something that has worked incredibly well for me.  I have 150 cuttings right now rooting / rooted.  I have tremendous success doing this.  I took a potting mix that I mixed up, 30-40% perlite, to 60-70% peat moss, my mix typically has a little epsom salt in it but I doubt that is necessary for this.  I then wet the mix down, then put 2" in a 6" deep plastic bin, I rubbed off some of the bottom of the cuttings so the green layer was showing on the cutting then placed them on the damp mix.  I think placed 2 - 3 more inches of mix on top of them.  I sprayed the top with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide just to avoid any mold issues (again not sure its recommended or necessary but it didnt hurt mine).  I placed this on top of a set of grow lights for heat.  Within a couple weeks you will see roots and possibly leaves poking out of the mix and on the bottom of the tray.  Pull them out and carefully pot them in cups, dont let the roots get too long before you do or they will be prone to breaking.  Almost ALL of my cuttings started roots this way.  If they didnt, I left them in there longer until they did.

I tried the 100% perlite method and breaking roots scared me so I went to this instead.

I found this thread through googling "What is the rarest fig variety" lol  After reading everyones posts I couldnt help but laugh to myself how odd of a question it is to be searching for the rarest of something.  Like someone posted its typically about money or about collecting.  I think for me the reason I was trying to find the rarest was because it would be something with a story that I could pass on.  I think thats what would make a fig tree more rare to me.  For example theres a person offering cuttings from a tree he found in a Brooklyn lot that was being cleared out.  I found a fig tree on a very old homestead that had the house torn down and just a very old brick storage building left standing there.  The building was so old the bricks were rotting clear out of it.

I would love to find cuttings of a fig tree that was a piece of someones family heritage in Greece, or cuttings from a tree that once stone at Monticello. Etc etc.  I am new to fig growing, I am currently rooting 12 varieties just because I want to and I look forward to seeing how it goes.  But Id love to have some trees with a known pedigree that every time I eat one of the figs I could remember its history or tell its story.  To me, thats what would make a fig tree rare.  Maybe im crazy though :)

I definitely think space is quickly becoming my biggest issue.  I have a greenhouse im building that is half done that I guess I need to fast track so I can get some grow tents put up around these to keep in the humidity while allowing them a chance to grow a bit.  Thanks guys, I am in 8a as well Snaglpus, down here in Wilmington, NC.

Also Jdsfrance, thank you for the information regarding the roots, I appreciate that and its something I will look for.

Sarakt, I appreciate that advice and while it sounds like a great solution, I dont know if the logistics of it with this many cuttings would work in the space I have.  Thats why ive been trying to shuffle plants of similar root growth into bins together to give them the best shot at reacting the same.  I may try it and see.  Im really hoping their will to survive outweighs my shortcomings.

As long as I know I should be ok to trim the dying / dead leaves and or leave 1 semi living leaf and it has a shot, im much better off. I just start weening, see a negative reaction and get scared of losing them all so I put the lid back on and nurse them back.  I want to kick these out of the nest as soon as I can to make room for the next batch of whatever I want to grow.  Theres about 150 cuttings rooting right now.

I really appreciate both of y'alls help.  I quite honestly have very little clue other than what ive read and thats just enough to make me semi dangerous to the cuttings. :)  Theres 12 or 12 different varieties in those bins and ive never grown a fig before.  Hadnt actually tasted one til maybe a month before I collected cuttings.  Someone local has a couple Beautiful Peters Honeys Trees that im waiting to get some cuttings from soon.

HoosierB that seems a lot like what is happening to be honest.  Here is 4 more photos.  2 show the cup of one of the wilters and 2 show (2) more different bins if ones with great growth in full humidity, no holes in the cups, and no wilting.

Thoughts on remedy?  Cut the dying leaves and continue weening?  I keep trying to cycle the same "growth stages" into the same bins.  I have some that had no foliage yet and no visible roots as well.  I also know a lot should be done in no light and I missed the boat on that early.  (learning curve)

(also a learning curve on how images vs files work here sorry)

Fignutty also the other piece of this is, while in the bins with the tops on they are fine.  That wilting didnt happen until I popped the top open by about 2 inches.  Then the wilting starting occurring which is why I was assuming it was more humidity related.

They do not and the reason why I opted for that was because the perlite had so much water in it I was worried too much wicking would occur.  I have not actually watered these figs from the top since 10/19 when they were just packed in moist soil.  All of the water has been coming from the humidity in the chamber.  The cups have had small beads of water on the inside but they are definitely light and not water logged at all.  I want to say 2 days ago on this last ween is when I tried to finally put 1/8th a cup or so of water in each cup.  Im 100% game to put holes in them all and drain the water from the perlite if you think that is the issue still.  I understand if I was watering them from the top or they were heavy cups full of water but as of now they arent.  (just trying to give a better idea of how this is setup)

Im willing to try that tomorrow, can poke holes with a soldering iron.

I have a bunch of cuttings at various stages of rooting.  This is my first attempt at all of this and I have 2 groups that have a bunch of roots showing throughout plastic cups and have pretty nice looking leaves.  When I ween them off humidity a good bunch of the leaves start to die off.  I assume they dont have enough of a root system to support the growth but im unsure if I should just trim the growth and still ween them off or put them back into full humidity.  Im worried at this point im going to start loosing a lot of them to mold so not sure how to proceed.

I have them all in clear plastic cups, in potting mix medium with 40%ish perlite.  I have perlite in the bottom of large bins with some water in for humidity and then the cups without holes in the bottom, stuck in the perlite for vertical support.  They have been in there since about 10/19 now.  I just dont know how to get them from where they are now, to the outside air and bigger pots.

Now Ive seen a lot of posts which amazingly helpful advice that really just summarizes down to "you did it wrong, next time do it this way".  While that is amazing advice and something that I look forward to, I would REALLY love someone to also chime in with an actual solution or option to go from where I am at now (no matter how much I may have done it wrong) to get a viable crop of cuttings if at all possible.  Thank you!!
