Danny,

I had e-mailed Vivian and sent her some local Celeste cuttings over the holidays.  Like others, sometimes life gets in the way of other things, even the figgy forum.

On a side note, I let you down........all three of your unknown purple fig cuttings failed to grow.  Totally my fault.  You sent me those cuttings in Aug 2013 and I tried rooting them over the Christmas holidays.  I should have started them much sooner. : (

Pete,

You need to try Charlie Papazian's recipe for Barkshack Gingermead.  It like a cross between strong flavored ginger ale and champange.  Aged 1-2 years it is to die for.

bb1977,

Photos please.  Also if you have fungus gnats flying about try the spray below which Lowes and Home Depot usually sells.  Fungus gnats can make you crazy.  I had some last year, but none this year, go figure.......except I drenched the soil mix /cuttings with Gnatrol solution at the get go and didn't wait for gnat sign.  Maybe that was the trick, preventative rather than reactive.

Smith and Celeste.  Agree with Dennis, even here in the Houston area my 2 year Smith is very sensitive to cold.  I've probably lost 25% of last years growth due to cold.

Do good intentions count?  Here's my spot from late last November where I was planning to plant my LSU Tiger in ground before it got way to cold way to quick.  Oh well, maybe in a couple of weeks.

Two cuttings about 6-7 inches long. I found this fig recommended for TX on a Texas A&M website. It produced a lot of figs but none ever ripened and all dropped. Maybe the tree needs to be older to ripen figs. Worth the experiment to someone especially when free. Hey, if you are new to figs this might be a good way to practice starting cuttings. PM me of interested. I'll pay postage. US only.

I started a lot of fig trees last winter and had some figs this past summer in a 3 gallon nursery pots.  5 gallon pot........you will have figs this year, no problem.  Try TangleFoot for the ants but be sure you place some kind of barrier around the tree (masking tape, painter tape, etc) before applying the TangleFoot on top of the tape.

Doing the same thing I did last year.  Cuttings were started day before Christmas.  Up potted these from 32 oz deli containers to 1 gallon nursery pots this past weekend.  On a table in a south facing window and for 2-3 hours at night they will get light from a screw in grow light.

Pete - any reason you don't like or want to use grow lights?

Figfan203,

"Instead of doing the indoor plastic box, heating mat, etc method... Can I just root the cuttings and bring them outside when it's warm enough? Will this cut down on the chances of me messing it up, which I'm afraid of."

How do you know you will mess it up unless you try?  I tried directly rooting cuttings outside in 1 gallon nursery pots here in hot, humid Houston and it was an absolute failure.  I'm sticking with the plastic box, heating mat method. : )

Another free to good home.  Doing some more spring trimming.

I have two thin cuttings about 5 inches long with 3-4 nodes.  Althought thin, these cuttings are much thicker than the cutting I started this tree from last year.  Both cuttings to one person.  PM me if interested.  US only.  No charge for the cuttings or postage.......paying it forward.  Note for those of you without the figgy wasp, you only get an edible breba crop.  Description from the Figgy Forum Variety pages below.

Origin Madera, Calif. 1920. Large, skin is deep green, minutely spotted white, pulp strawberry red. Sweet, delicious fresh or dried. Commonly matures good fruit without caprification near the coast. Tree highly vigorous. Hardy, best adapted to cool areas. (023) (075) (026) (026a) Excellent coastal variety is unique in that it produces a heavy breba crop, which ripens early, followed by a light fall crop. Delicious sweet large green fruits with strawberry colored flesh. Does best in the North West and other cool areas. A vigorous growing and hardy tree. (1158)

Yeah, Yeah.....I know, DK is for cool weather areas, but I couldn't resist the experiment.  This year will be my first year for the breba crop.  We will see how it goes.

rafaelissimmo,

Doesn't help with your problem now but next time you may want to switch your ratios.  66% perlite and 33% peat moss.  The high amount of peat moss in your mix may be keeping your cuttings too damp.

LE,

Strange I have photos on my laptop but didn't post or note how it tasted.  OK, posting photos now. : )  Note the very large eye.

I seem to remember that the taste was very good.  How do I remember?  Well, I think I only had 1 or 2 figs from this tree this year and I remember thinking (or wishing) I had more and couldn't wait for the 2014 growing season.

I started my cuttings March 4, 2013 and this tree was my absolute strongest grower by far.  I'm guessing the diameter is 2 inches or more.

Todays windows typically have a coating that reduces the sunlight intensity a great deal on the inside.  You know, keep your house cooler, reduce furniture/carpet fading.  So go very slow introducing your new figlets to sun, especially southern sun or you will end up with this........

The tree did survive.

Bob,

I've not had issues with tip cuttings, in fact I slightly prefer tip cuttings since they give a straighter start to the tree.  I know in a few years a non-tip cutting will morph into a large straight tree, but to me I just get a bettter warm fuzzy feeling with tips cuttings.  Perhaps the cuttings feel this positive energy and respond kindly to me, kinda like talking to your plants.  Don't know about you, but I spend so much time talking to myself I don't have any extra time to talk to my fig cuttings and trees. ; )

Suzi,

You may not be looking to be a Mom to another fig but I have a suggestion.  Try a Salce from Saxonfig.  Of all my one year old trees this year the Salce seemd to need the least amount of water this past summer.  It may love your hot and dry environment.

Cuttings started either the day before or the day after Dec 25.  I used Dip n Grow not because I'm a big believer but because I had it handy.  A few back ups were started in Root Riot cubes and glad I did.  Seems as if Gino's Black is a very slow starter in 60/40 perlite/potting soil in 32 oz deli containers but a faster starter in Root Riot cubes, go figure.

I start my cuttings in a window that does not get direct sunlight but then transition them in a 24 quart Sterlite container that does get direct sunlight.  I taped a couple of plastic coat hangers together to form a tent with a clear plastic bag.  After 3-4 days in this set up I start opening the bag slightly to decrease humidity and get the figlets accustomed to lower humidity levels.  At this point I put them on the window sill with full sun until they get up potted to a 1 gallon nursery pot.  Then I put the 1 gallon pot on a table in front of a window that gets full sun and supplement that with a screw in grow light in a pole lamp.

I mix up a small quantity of Gnatrol WDG and water.  2 or 3 teaspoons per 32 oz deli container, depending on how dry each is.
