James,
I am in NW Arkansas, zone 6b,  Iffy for in ground but I am trying it with protection.  Had some die back (even with protection) on my in ground Gino's  BL and MB VS this past winter but both came  back well and I expect to have a decent crop. As we know last winter was a heck of a cold winter.  Perhaps someone in the Denver area, or a similar zone can give better information?
I will try Hollier and several others in ground but will have at LEAST one back up in a pot, just in case.
I am a relative newcomer to the fig world and still feeling out the different cultivars.  I will reduce from my current 40+ eventually, probably, maybe,,,,   ;o)

God rest his soul.
Crazy story indeed.
But you did not finish the rest of the story.  Did the cuttings root?  do you now have a tree(s) and figs from Emilio?

LOL all, she thinks I am nuts as I have over 40 cultivars in pots.
the "plan" is to evaluate and weed out to get to ones I want to put in ground or are worth the effort to keep in pots.

I did not take the time to take a picture as was busy trying to get stuff done to leave town, again,,,
but had my first Hollier get ripe on my small 7 gallon tree.  Cut it in half and gave half to the wife.  Her reaction,,,,,  with an amazed look on her face:

OMG!! that was incredible,,,, do you have more???  What kind is it?  You need to be sure and save that tree, it is a keeper!!!

It was really good, looking forward to getting more from it.  A good sweet figgy/berry.
What is peoples experiences with is as far as cold hardiness in ground???

Building a new sun-room (converting a covered patio) (so, "new construction" on the openings) and bought some miss-ordered windows from a local window place at a HUGE discount.  When looking at them this weekend in preparation for installing them, they did not have nailing fins for mounting. I have looked on line and these are most often used for replacement but can be used for new construction but I cannot find out a lot on how to physically do this w/o the mounting fins and with no previously finished opening to mount them in.
Anyone walk me through this?
I learned a lot from my dad, helping him remodel and flip old rent houses when I was in high school. I am reasonably competent but will not call myself a skilled carpenter.

unlikely as it has burned stored energy in rooting the first time.
you never know until you try.

What Steve said, I use the foil and do air layers all summer.
Ifyou want figs maybe wait a little later and let them get ripe as you are airlayering, or pull MOST of the figs as not to tax the young plant as it develops roots and starts off on its own.

Surprisingly good for a less than one year old plant that overwintered in the greenhouse.
Pulled off all baby figs but 2, wanted a little taste.
Little to no seed crunch, skin was tender.  Pretty sweet and slightly figgy.  Closed eye.
My first "light" fig.  I still like the dark better but am NOT a hater of the light!!  ;o)
Sorry for the quality of the pics.Atreano whole.jpg  Atreano cut.jpg  Atreano eye.jpg  Atreano close.jpg

Leaves are the "solar panels" for the trees and how they collect and convert energy for them, are they not?
With no leaves, how does it have energy to make fruit and grow?
or am I totally out in left field?

I am a meat scientist, not a botanist,,,  ;o)

you can do a search as there have been many conversations in the past over cold hardiness as well as this past winters effects.
in a nutshell, this past winter, pretty much everyone had die back on pretty much anything that was not protected and many that were.  some are coming back, some are not

Super bummed.
After thinking about it for some time, I ponied up and splurged, and bought a couple Sumaki cuttings from Bass this winter.  A few weeks ago I got them in perlite and started them.  They both took off and were doing well, althought still at the fragile state, not ready to up-pot.

Fast forward to 2 1/2 weeks ago.  I had a business trip, and planned to be gone for a week and asked the wife to mist my cuttings twice while I was gone.  At the end of this trip I managed to get by to see my elderly parents (out of state from where I currently reside).  While there, my mother developed complications from a (now known to be botched) surgery and I spent the next week with my mother in the hospital, trying to help my sisters in getting her through this rough time.

Well, in dealing with all this, I neglected to ask my wife to continue the mistings (unbeknown to me, she had negelected to mist the previous week as well).  Long story short (yes, I know, too late for that) when I got home, they had gotten too dry and I lost them,,,,, I am sick,,,,,,
