Blake
you could have also said that the prices are very reasonable ( I received my order 2 weeks ago).
Raintree Nursery also has some good varieties. Yesterday I got my order from Rolling River for a Tena and Beall: Tina was (had been pruned) 4' tall and 3/4'', Beall was about 4 feet. Shipping I found a little steep but when I saw the trees I thought it was worth.
I also bought 3 Papajohns from Petals from the Past, about a month ago and I got 3 very nice plants. Worth every penny.

Has anyone tried to spray the medium with Sevin ConcentratedBug Killer? It is made to spay fruits and vegetables and controls (kills) over 100 insects. It is a poison but by the time the cutting will fruit, it will not be effective anymore. I tried it today on one small pot (half a gallon) and tomorrow I will inspect it to see the results.

Since the cuttings were in an enveloppe, wrapped and protected by the wind in the mailbox, I would give them a chance and try to root them. Who knows?

Is any member familiar with this seller? I found him on the other web site (Gw) but I would like to know if anyone has done any kind of transaction with him and what is his reputation: PVSUCCESS19@aol.com

I have emailed him but when he answered, there is no signature and this aroused doubts.
I would appreciate any input

I read somewhere that : "Dr Paul Recher has some kind of tropical fig in his collection that's a least 5x bigger than carica".
One member also mentioned in this Forum that somewhere in Central America he came across (Ecuador?) a fig he thought at the beginning it was a pear.
I would appreciate any information regarding those tropical varieties (including avabiality) since I could not find anything in my search on the web.

I agree that names mean nothing but it is a way to communicate and understand if we are talking about the same product. A large and tasty fig appeals to our senses and nobody cares what it is called but when I try to buy a fig tree online it is nice (and reassuring) to know if it is a Black Madeira or a Brown Turkey.

I would bury the cutting almost horizontally in the soil and wait. When it will be time for re potting then I would cut it in two, during dormant period and increase exponentially my chances for success.

Subject: Is Verte a Cold Climate Fig? Replies: 18
Posted By: vitalucky Views: 1,333

Here in South Florida, my Verte does not want to grow. I tried to make a tree out of it but after growing for a season, the next season the stem remained exactly the same: no growth at all. Instead it branched at soil level. Now I will let it grow as a bush and see what happens.
Compost, mulch and fertilizer did not help. I was careful not to let the soil dry out.
Had a few fruits and they were very good. I thought this climate might be to hot for the variety.

Here in Florida, it is like in Alabama: a lot of rain in the summer and then it drys up. I did have a couple of brebas that were really bad but as summer progressed they got better and now they are really good. It seems to like moisture, so reducing the watering, especially in a dry climate, must have a negative influence on it.

Subject: Tena Replies: 4
Posted By: vitalucky Views: 692

This is how EL describes Tena: "Medium sized yellow fig has delicious tender amber flesh. Good for warm climates. Midseason ripening". Can anybody confirm this to be true? How does it behave in humid weather, does it split? Being mid season, does it mean it has no breba crop?
Thanks

Last week I ordered 3 Papajohn from "Petals from The Past". They were only $9 each and when they arrived, yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised: they are the best plants I ever bought. They are not shown on their catalog but if you contact them, when you place the order they send you Papajohn.

Subject: --- A thought about the rare figs Replies: 22
Posted By: vitalucky Views: 1,794

I believe the BEST ONES are not rare because when people move around and bring a fig variety, of course they bring what they consider a good one. So unless it is one of the new hybrids, the exotic ones are not necessarily the best ones. They are rare, those who got them ask a higher price as for any uncommon commo0dity.

I believe that since Mediterranean people have been trading for thousands of years, many varieties have been exchanged and are in different regions with different names.
Also, because of the difference in climate, soil and even culture practices, the behave and fruit differently. If they looked and tested good, someone was taking them home....

Posted By: vitalucky Views: 472

I had Brebas about 2-3" from the ground.

I got 3 Atreano and they had a Breba crop as now there is no main crop.
Here we had a very humid, hot, rainy summer. Could this be the reason for the lack of main crop?
Or since new growth is just beginning, could a main crop still arrive?

What about the leaf pattern, the flavor, the number of seeds etc etc......?
Maybe it would be useful to regroup all similar figs in a category!
We could "explore" then some NEW varieties instead of "sweating" to get a new variety and then realize it is a CLONE of what we got already!

In   the Canadian site brugmansia-quebec.com this is how they describe  Peter's Honey:

12.99$2

What I bought as Peter's Honey turned out as......something else, so I cannot compare but I have Lattarula and Italian Honey: does that mean I should not buy a Petyer's Honey or those people are adding more confusion to the would of figs?
Could someone who has those varieties explain the differences and similarities?
Thanks

Tami

I live in SW Florida and our soil is infested with nematodes. They do not like mulch and concrete.
To control them either we plant near concrete (a wall or a pathway etc..) or we supply some compost to the soil and then we add between 4 to 6 inches of mulch. This keeps the soil moist and eliminates the nematodes.

Subject: Fig of the day - Sucrette 08-26-2013 Replies: 11
Posted By: vitalucky Views: 2,889

I have a Sucrette and in my zone (10b) it is an excellent performer: it ripens in very hot weather and it is not affected by the torrential rain we have been having this year (doesn't split or crack). It has a good fig flavor but the skin is tough. A closed eye prevents spoilage and bug entering. A very good fig for hot and humid climate!

Subject: Root pruning Replies: 5
Posted By: vitalucky Views: 740

I read some time ago that the most effective way to root prune is to:
-Wait for the tree to be dormant
-Let it dry
-Pull it out of the pot
-Cut the round root ball into a square
-Re-pot
-The next time you will repeat this operation, cut at the corners of the square (now a cylinder again). This is a way to rejuvenate the root system.
You will be stimulating a lot of new roots, especially capillary ones which are responsible for water and nutrients uptake. It also seems simpler than cutting in a circle.
