I would guess the "soil from deep in the wood" is really a natural compost because of the decomposed leafs, grass and branches; with the addition of composted manure Marius get the "best of the best".
I wish we all had access to such "black gold"!

Thanks Pete
I have used EL several times and I was happy with their service and their product.
I also have to admit that if I could not afford a bigger tree, I would prefer buying the 2" pot from EL at $5 than the tissue culture at $5.99

The tissue ones would only be the last choice for a variety I could not have by any other means

I would like to add that people from USDA keep an eye (and know who buys on eBay).
This winter I decided to get some cuttings from Turkey. In April a USDA inspector from Miami appeared at my door with a copy of my invoice and papers to seize the cuttings for destruction. He was extremely nice!
It so happens that anyone can ship anywhere but at the port of entry problems arise.
Also, most of the good varieties where brought in by immigrants in the past but without the proper name. Buying from other country might give you a variety that is already in the USA under a different name.

I have to agree that a cutting from a reputable source is a better alternative but when someone does not have the budget for a VdB plant (on eBay at many $$$) and cannot find a cutting could this tissue culture plant be an alternative?
Also, doesn't UC Davis use tissue culture?

Fig trees including VdB for $5.99 and up to 3 items for $7.99 combined shipping.
It seems a good deal.
Does anyone know this seller?

I have this fig (zone 10b) and when it ripens it is like seedless jam. Even when not fully ripen the taste is sweet. It is a good grower and never cracks or spoils not even in rainy weather. The eye is closed and they get yellow long before ripening. When extremely hot some figs drop. Completely seedless.
Definitely a keeper.

Thanks for your understanding and I wish to add that those of you who received LSU purple cuttings from me, those originated from Rolling River.
It has been a lesson  and now before I buy anything online, I do my homework.
This Forum has thought me a lot. Without it, I might have gone for years never realizing I had been had and believing I had a Peter's Honey.
Many thanks to members who made the effort to explain and posted pictures and to those who helped compiling the "Recommended Nursery List" which I am certain will help many fig lovers avoid the negative experience I have had.

PS: Those who received Peter's Honey cutting from me, please mark them as UNKNOWN (since they come from an unreliable source).

Some years ago, before I was a Forum member, I bought two trees from Lowoe's: a Brown Turkey and a Black Mission. They turned out to be both Brown Turkey.

About 3 or 4 years ago, I ordered a Magnolia, a Kadota and a Peter's Honey from tyty (I went back and found my receipt, after I started having doubts because I had learned enough from this Forum) and guess what? I now got a Magnolia, what seems to be a Celeste was tagged as Peter"s Honey and a Brown Turkey.

Unfortunately I have shared some cutting of that fake Peter's Honey (the fruit color was said to be different in every climate) and I am sorry for it. I not only have added to the confusion by doing this but some Members will feel cheated.
Tyty gave a good description of the variety but the tag was handwritten: I guess the just write the name of the ordered variety no matter what it really is! And I did not know any better

Now all my figs come from reputable nurseries or Forum members. I have learned my lesson.

Florida Hill Nursery has 8 fig varieties at $6.99 each but when you read their information page on figs, it has a lot of misinformation's, like "their flowers are fragant..." and "....when planted too close there will be cross pollination..."
For those interested it might be a source of plants at very low price. (are lab grown)

I had mixed some minor elements (liquid form) and decided to spray the leftover on 5 small potted fig trees. When I saw these trees after a week, the leaves where dark green and they had no rust at all.
I was so happy with the results that after a month (two weeks ago) I resprayed.

My question: has anyone tried foliar application of minor elements?
In the affirmative, what were your results?

I loved your video and it made me dream. I like what you are doing but being a Floridian myself, I started to wonder about nematodes which plague the Southwest (I live in the Ft Myers area). Is your area nematode free? It seems they do not like mulch but what happens when the roots spread?
The Algerian that is not producing, could it be that it needs caprification?
You did a great job and it is an inspiration to fig lovers.
I love it! Congratulations!

It is OK to use grass clippings but keep them away from the bark. When they touch the bark, it rots (as the clippings compost, they generate heat)and the tree might die.

My Smith is to small to judge but LSU purple is a good variety for espalier, because it has a tendency to branch out a lot, almost like a  tomato vine. Begin by making it a tree structure, then cut the leader and new branches come out to begin your espalier.

I do understand that shipping is a problem with fresh figs but the event of farmers markets should develop it as a local crop. I know several produce buyers and they would be thrilled to find  local crop. Also, a lot of people enjoy fresh figs but it is not widely planted as a backyard fruit and I thought it was because plants are not easy to find, especially good varieties. When Lowe's, HD or Wal Mart have them, they sell them all.

A great buy that Cogshall mango. They have a sweet taste reminiscent of a sweet, light pineapple. One thing to remember (I grow them) they ripen from the inside out, so if you wait, like for the other mangoes, it will be over-ripe. The tree gets to about ten feet and here in Florida it is a very good producer. The taste is excellent but is not commercially produced because the skin in thin and it does not ship well.
Nice picture

I believe we should not fertilize after the end of June and reduce water (irrigation) by September or according to our zone, so the trees stop growing and have some time to harden. This prepares them for the winter and might make the difference between survival or loosing a tree.
I would leave the tree alone: many fig tree die back but regrow and sometimes produce a crop the first year on the new shoots.
