Marcus

The flavor profile definitely changes versus fresh, but you can certainly tell the difference. It is more acidic for lack of a better word and has that rich berry flavor.

Marcus that's usually the one thing I'll ask for... new jars or lids to replace the ones I gave.  Unfortunately very few people do, but the ones that do get first dibs on the next batch!

I am hoping for another large crop this year.  I NEED to make more of this jam.  My wife gave my last jar to my Father in law, thinking it was just another fig jam jar.  He's spoiled now!

I would say potential root rot.  The pot may be staying too wet.

Fall.  This is when most folk's trees have lignified and gone dormant.  The cuttings will be fresh, full of energy, and root well.

Justin, I would up pot the airlayer you got from me in a week or two.  I don't completely disagree with Sas in that waiting until it goes dormant is the best time, but that airlayer will get root bound pretty quickly in that small pot and it won't grow as well throughout the rest of the season without up potting it.

As far as getting cuttings, most folks won't have any until the fall when they prune.  Many members list their cuttings on eBay, some list them on here, and others will trade with you if you reach out to them via private message.

I agree with the above, switch to drip irrigation and save yourself a bunch of headaches.

Also, bury the rest of your pots at least part way.  It will keep those black pots a bit cooler as well as help provide additional moisture from below if needed.  It will also prevent the figs from falling over during storms.  I learned this the hard way my first year and lost multiple nearly ripe figs due to falls.

I have a feeling that not only are there multiple Genovese Nero's floating around, but there are also multiple versions of Rob's Genovese Nero NOT at this point too.  I'm not sure who I got mine from last year at Bass' fig fest, but mine looks very different than this.  Last year the main crop didn't ripen properly and may need caprification.  If that's the case, I plan to either destroy mine to limit the continuation of the misnaming or label it "Unknown" and ship it to someone in California that wants a fig to play with.

It depends on variety, your preferred taste and environment. In the northeast, figs may sour due to humidity if left too long. If you are in a dry climate, you can let them dry on the tree. I have found I like my figs with a bit of firmness, but others like them as ripe as possible.

Suzi I would put a bag or something over it!

I love the SIPs and how well they grow figs, but I've gotten away from them the last year or so.  My reasons are pretty simple... space.  They take up a lot of room in my garage and they are too heavy to stack on top of one another.  They are also too heavy to do the fig shuffle with.  If you have the room and the strength though, they grow figs better than anything else I've found.  For now, I've started using tree pots with holes only in the side and burying them halfway in the ground.  We will see how they work in comparison.

To address a few of the questions I saw... much like Dennis I've used landscape fabric and burlap and I have seen no difference.  I can say by the second year, there is no burlap left (I haven't checked sooner to see how fast it degrades).  I've experimented with plastic on top and plastic off.  I believe the plastic helps in keeping the soil damp and allows a larger root ball to form.  I haven't seen any serious degradation not using it either though.  The only downside to not using it, is you get a lot of suckers.  If you are trying to grow the fig into a tree and not a bush, it is more convenient to use the plastic covering.  I use drip irrigation in my potted orchard and some SIPs I use a fill tube and some I do not... I don't think it matters either way as long as you water enough to fill the reservoir.  I tried to root prune some of my 55g barrel cut in half SIPs last year and I couldn't get the tree out.  It was just too heavy and too stuck in there.  So I ended up using a sawz all and root pruning blade and cut sections of the root mass out and then filled in with fresh soil.  It wasn't perfect, but seemed to work.

Pino I have heard that Brogiotto Nero and Bourjasotte Noir are the same fig.  Looking at pictures of BNs online, they have the same characteristic squat shape and light stripes when stagnant, so yes I believe they are likely the same fig.

My top 10 for figs I have tasted in more than a single summer:

Black Madeira - amazing flavor and large juicy fig
Preto - very similar if not the same as Black Madeira
Violette de Bordeaux/Negronne/Nero600M - excellent flavor
Angelos Dark - early ripening and great flavor
Green Ischia - great flavor, ripens in colder weather
Malta Black - productive and good flavor
Chicago Hardy - good flavor
Brogiotto Nero - large meaty fig, good flavor
Sodus Sicilian - large fig, hardy
Excel - great flavored breba
Improved Celeste - ok flavor, but very early ripening

Rob most of us move our potted trees at some point, so they need to be acclimated on both sides so that when moved, the other side isn't burnt.

That being said, I don't acclimate well and deal with some leaf and fruit burn.

Yes that looks burnt to me.  It will either fall off if burnt too badly or will hang on the tree producing some energy for quite a while.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Figs are tough and they will sprout new leaves.  It may delay your figs slightly if it is a small tree, but it shouldn't be too bad.

Marcus I am all out of Sodus Sicilian cuttings for this year, I'm not sure about the other members that I have passed this tree on to over the past couple of years.  It is definitely a unique fig in my collection and I'm looking forward to trying it in a fuller sun area this year to see how it affects the peachy flavor.

I find my Pretos to taste best if I pick them as soon as they drip honey. Waiting too long after gives them less flavor in my opinion.

It's a green fig, how good can it really be?  Just kidding, somewhat.  I have heard that Frank (FMD) got a fruit to ripen in Florida, but didn't see any update on taste.  If nothing else, the inside color and flavor will be different from the pollinated fig overseas.

To me it looks like a lack of moisture getting to the leaves.  Either it was in a high humidity area, such as a greenhouse, and your air is very dry... or possibly the root structure was damaged significantly during planting.

So just remember that BM is a difficult variety to root. If you have experience rooting, go for it! If not, you may want to spend the extra $ on an already rooted cutting.

Black Madeira / Preto have a berry flavor like VdB, but it is kinda like the difference between straberry jam and strawberry cake. They both taste like berry, but BM has a sweetness to it that is just amazing.
