Yeah I am surprised that no one elses has fruited or ripened. Mine is prolific. I did let it grow inside all winter, so perhaps I have a head start.

My thoughts on three similar figs...

Don, the spoiled figs are pretty aweful. You don't notice the larvae, but the rancid fruit is pretty strong. However, I had a rotten watermelon once and it was 100x worse.

I took a video last night to help explain the problem with figs and Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD).  Please do not watch on a full stomach...

I don't have too much to add other than high humidity will increase eye size on some of my figs, Sodus Sicilian in particular.

Thanks Frank. Yes it was in the greenhouse a month or two before being put outside. I believe 75% of the figs on it still may not ripen in time, unless I move it back into the greenhouse.

I don't think it is Brogiotto Nero, as all my immature figs have subtle stripes.

Thanks Biil. I'm finding it is tough to get them the same ripeness as the Negronne seems to ripen "more fully". I have to pick the VdB much more wrinkled to be at the same ripeness as the Negronne. I picked this Negronne barely hanging today to try and get them close.

Here is another pair of Negronne (left) and VdB (right). I picked the Negronne early, when it looked closer to the VdB.

It is really difficult to tell with such a young plant, it could be several different things. The important thing is if the seller is reputable, when buying such a young plant.

Sal if you bought it from Bill it may only ripen breba. There appear to be two distinct Melanzanas... the one from Bill has yet to ripen a main crop without pollination for me.

Ok tonight's experiment was homemade fish hydrolysate! Theresa and I fish Lake Ontario almost every weekend and always have a lot of fish carcasses.

Hopefully, in about 3 weeks, it will be ready to try out!

Jarrett, the tree to the left of the stairs looking out is a Chicago Hardy that I had planned to grow in the greenhouse all summer.  I had to move it out as we are getting a floor laid in the greenhouse this weekend.  The tree went kinda whacky in the greenhouse and had I not installed French doors, I have no idea how I would have gotten it out without cutting it.

Dennis, I'm glad to hear the three you got look right.  My guess is there were some mix ups, but they are making good on any mistakes.  Do any of yours have fruit on them yet?  The one shipped to me has a couple of small figs, which will ripen this year albeit in the greenhouse perhaps.

Once we can confirm the ripe figs, it will be an incredible deal to get a Black Madeira for $29.99.

I received the replacement Black Madeira from JF&E last night...

As far as I can tell, it looks to be a Black Madeira. I won't know for sure until it fruits.

Next time, less honey and I think I will cook the figs. Without cooking them, they were frozen fig pieces kind of like the chunks in strawberry ice cream.

Posting in this thread as well as the two others regarding JF&E Black Madeira...
Ok I have an update. Brandy at JF&E contacted me today in repsonse to my email. She was extremely nice and very upset about the mix up. She provided me a copy of her USDA receipt from 2008, to show the authenticity of their Black Madeira. She also provided a picture of their mother plant:

There were also two pictures of child plants:

The pictures she provided look exactly like Black Madeira. Brandy was also very insistent that JF&E has a strong "true to name" gaurantee. I told her my Brother's tree was healthy, so no need for a refund, but that I would like to purchase another true Black Madeira. She insisted that I not pay since I did not get the correct variety.

Mistakes happen. Sometimes cuttings get dropped, swapped, confused, etc. The important thing is once realized, the seller makes good.

Two important things to note:
1) JF&E appears to have a true Black Madeira UCD
2) There was a mixup with at least a couple of their trees
3) They are willing to ensure their customers are happy

I will report back when I receive the replacement tree next week.
