There were two sexy sisters waiting for me when I got home today!

Black Madiera

Ronde de Bordeaux

The Black Madiera will get up potted tomorrow and go into the semi heated greenhouse in hopes that I can get a couple of ripe figs. The RdB will get up potted and go under grow lights for the winter.

I still can't believe how many figs are on the BM! Pete I don't know what you fed this thing, but holy smokes!

I picked my first green ischia today and didn't expect much with it being such a young tree and the cold rainy weather lately. However, it was delicious! It was incredibly jammy, sweet, and a rich rasberry flavor. It outshined even my negronne so far this year. There are still two left on the tree, hopefully they ripen before frost!

KK nice setup! Those look like metal halides on the right, no problem with how hot they get? Which plants do better, the ones in the window or under the grow lights?

Bob what do you do a month or two in when the trees are larger than the spacing on the shelves? Or do you remove a couple of shelves to give yourself more room? I'm assuming you meant one of the shelving units they sell with like five shelves like this one:

I'm looking for ideas on a light setup for growing figs, or at least the fig trees, indoors this winter. I have a T5 fixture and a couple flourescent fixtures I used to overwinter my hot peppers last year, but I constantly struggled with a good way to hang the lights over the plants. So let's see pics of your setups or a description of them!

I have been intrigued by what looked like a fig tree growing in someone's yard in Sodus,NY all summer long. I was curious as it gets pretty cold up there, yet the tree was growing in a shady part of the yard with little protection from the harsh winds they get off Lake Ontario in the winter. I drove by the house nearly every weekend we visited (I live about 5hrs South, but spend weekends at the lake). I kept hoping to see someone at the house to ask if it was a light or dark fig, but never saw anyone.

Today was our last full day at the lake and on our last drive by my friend who was driving pulled over and said... "You've driven by all summer, why not go ring the bell?" I figured it was someone's vacation home and I had just been missing them, but I gave it a go. I rang the door bell and to my surprise, an old Italian couple came to the door looking slightly frightened. I wasn't quite sure what to say... so I just blurted out "um, I saw your fig tree from the road and I thought I would stop by and see if you knew the history of it?" The old woman's face lit up with a huge smile. "Come in, come in!" she said!

We spent a while talking. Her husband had a hard time hearing, but was elated that the younger generation was interested in his Italian heritage. They explained to me that he was now 88 and his grandfather had brought the tree with him from Sicily over 120 years ago! Since then, the tree has been moved from house to house as they moved and finally settled in Sodus in the 1960s. They don't cover it and suffer very little if any dieback each year. This may be the fig I've been looking for, one that can survive the winter outside and still taste delicious! They were excited to have me taste them and had two in the fridge. They were spectacular! They were close to the flavor of my negronne, but for lack of better words, creamier with a more pronounced flavor. I asked the couple if they would be willing to let me take a cutting and the old man hopped up like a teenager and grabbed his clippers and was out the back door with a big grin on his face! They sent me off with two large cuttings.

A great day... I got to meet a wonderful Italian couple and listen to a small part of their history as well as takea piece of it home with me to hopefully enjoy for years to come! Now the long wait of rooting, repotting, and growing the next couple of years to see how they do in PA! I took a few quick pics, but wish I had gotten some of the fruit on the trees. The ones in the fridge had dehydrated a bit and lost some of their color. Nick

So I could use some help with a fig ID... I bought a fig from the nursery down the road a while ago.  They said it was a Conadria from Edible Landscaping that they got about 7 years ago.  Problem is, it doesn't look like a Conadria.  I'm thinking it might be an Atreano.

The figs develop a light greenish yellow skin with red stripes when they mature.  It makes for a very pretty fruit.  The insides of the breba are bright purple rimmed with a red interior.  Below are a few pics:

I just picked my first ripe Atreano using my bags... worked very well, no more bird problems. We'll see if they wise up. It also kept the ants and other insects out... I tried cutting some small holes in a plastic bag, but ants got in that one.

Looking at Jons pictures I'm inclined to agree with the possibility it's an Atreano. Jon's pictures show the purple rim and seedy center.

Fransisco, as much as our figs look alike, our leaves do not.

If anyone has an Edible Landscaping conadria I'd love to compare as that's where the nursery said they got theirs from.

Still picking them too early... this one today dented when I touched it, but apparently still not ripe enough.

The fig was still bright purple inside. It will be awesome if the fig continues to stay purple inside with the main crop!

I have 9 more brebas, hopefully by the last one i'll wait long enough to get a ripe one!

LED by far assuming you get a decent light. Light output is more important in my other hobby, reef aquariums. Everyone is switching to LEDs for their output, lifespan, low operating cost, and flexibility.

Gene mine came from the nursery down the road. He said he got it from edible landscaping several years ago. I agree on the pulp, it is a very bright purple.

wow those are huge!  My conadria is a pretty large bush and has ~20 brebas and hundreds of new crop starting.  I had a couple of brebas about ripe, not sure what the last couple of days of large amounts of rain will do to them though.

Thanks Bob, there are still a dozen or so brebas on my conadria so ill need to wait a bit longer on them. Is there a general rul on how many days from the time they start to get soft?

Thought for sure one of my conadria brebas was ripe today. It was nice and squishy and had started to split a bit on the bottom. Alas, it was not. It had very little flavor other than that "unripe melon" taste. The next one I'll need to wait until it's all wrinkly I suppose!

I came home tonight to find the mocking bird stuck inside the netting again today.  I was going to leave him until the morning then grab him and drive a few miles away and let him go, but he was pretty beat up and I didn't think he'd make it through the night, so I let him fly away... he couldn't fly very well, but made his way off.

We put up a bird feeder today... with any luck the birds will fill up on that... more than likely it will just attract more birds.

I had never seen a mocking bird here in PA until my strawberries started to ripen.  Then I went out yesterday and found a bird stuck in the bird netting we had covering the strawberries.  Much to my surprise it was a mocking bird.  It suddenly dawned on me that my fig trees were only 20 yards away!  I let the bird go and he flew far far away...

This morning I went out to water the figs and sure enough, there was the mocking bird sitting in my fig tree looking at me... just waiting...

How many figs can a single bird eat?

Thanks noss! Yes I talked about it in my black mission thread… here is the post in case you didn't see it…

The self watering 2L are really easy... just take a 2L bottle and cut it in half, maybe 2" more towards the top.  Then take a couple of paper towels to make the wick.

Here's a youtube video showing just how to do it:

So after receiving cuttings of jimmy's St.Anthony (tbr), I placed the cuttings several ways to see how they would grow. I put one in a self watering 2L bottle, two in a potting soil mix, and two in the normal vermiculite/perilite mix after rooting in sphagnum moss. I then placed them in a humidity chamber.

Here are the results:

Self watering 2L:

Potting mix in a cup:

The second one was placed directly outside in the shade, looks pretty dead.

I was very surprised by how well the self watering pot did. I'm going to try this method more in the future as it's actually the easiest method since I don't need to worry about over or under watering.

Wanted to give an update on the progress of my black missions...

I just got back from vacation for a few days and they really took off! So much so the one on the left had the plastic top raised off the humidity chamber a couple of inches! Hence why it looks squished. I'll need to up pot these tomorrow into 1 gallon trade pots and get them used to the outdoors.

Not really sure, but it gave it a mild fruity taste that was very nice with the bitter balsamic flavor.

I wanted to give an updated on my Black Mission cuttings.  The growth in less than a week has been impressive!

Temps tonight look like they are going to get extremely cold again and I hadn't planned on moving my potted trees in, so I quickly had to find something that would allow me to pull in 55g barrels cut in half made into self watering pots... I have them on a drip irrigation system, so they were full of water and extremely heavy.  I stopped at Harbor Freight though and they had a hand truck with a nice wide platform on the bottom... along with a 20% off coupon it was only $80.  It worked well getting the trees into the garage!

I thought I'd share the progress of my black mission cuttings. I got a black mission from a nursery that looked like it had died over the winter. I figured I'd try practicing rooting some cuttings from it though. First I tried the damp paper towel and ziploc method... all of the cuttings got mold. I lightly scrubbed them with a toothbrush and dish soap and put two of the cuttings into a cup with perlite in my "humidity chamber" and two cuttings into a tupperware container with damp sphagnum moss. The cuttings in the perlite got moldy again within days, both rotted, but I managed to save a 1" piece from one and tossed it in the sphagnum container. I placed the container half on a heating pad set to low. About a week later, the 1" piece to my amazement had roots! The other two looked dead. I put the 1" piece in the humidity chamber in a cup of perlite. A week later, I checked on the other two cuttings...

LO

Amazingly, they burst with life! I don't quite understand why the mother tree hasn't sprouted, but there must still be life in it!

I placed these cuttings in a cup with a mix of vermiculite, perlite, and potting soil and placed them in the humidity chamber.

My humidity chamber is just a 10g aquarium with a plastic seed starter cover over it.

The next cuttings I get, I think I'll try in these self watering pots I made from a 2 liter bottle and paper towels, they keep the soil moist without it being soggy from oveGr watering. My peppers are doing well in them.

Hopefully, in a few months I'll have a couple nice little black mission trees!

The local PA (zone 6b) nursery by me has a large (5yr old) black mission and a large conadria in pots for sale.  They also have small black missions.  What would everyone's recommendation be if they could only buy one larger plant?  Would you get the smaller black mission since they grow so fast?  I'd like to get one larger plant to compliment my smaller (2yr) negrone, neri 2, osborne, and sicilian that likely won't have many figs this year.

Both large figs, the one on the left is supposed to be the black mission and the one on the right the conadria...
