@ greenfig
it is a fig that is known in the peloponnisos area...
peloponnisos is the part of greece that looks like a fig leaf.
there are many figs in greece that are known in other parts of the country
such as vavatsika, avgosika, mantzanosika and about 40 more that are well
known in parts of greece but you will not find them on google search. however you will find them
in many books and papers on figs.
greeks dont care much about names of figs.
that is why you will find in most nurseries just 2 types mavra syka and aspra sika (no name black fig and noname white fig)
end every nursery probably does not sell the same black as mavra sika or the same white as aspra sika
you have to go to a realy good nursery to find named figs.

i can tell you that i am 42 years old and have eaten figs all my life.
i sold the land that i had my figs in and bought a new one.
this is the first fig that i went out to the nurseries to look for.
not the world famous vasilika sika (black or white)
it took some time but i now have one.
as far as taste goes ill give it a try.
rich, with some crunch because of the seeds.
a bouquet of flavors that stays with you long after you are done.

@Rich  i will take it to a nersery ant try to find the info for you.
i hope i can help.

@ Tyler thank you.

@ Francisco
thank you my friend.
i like them 2-3 more days past this point but my 6year old boy never lets them get there.
i like to see the honey out the eye. it is not at this point yet.

@pino this is the main crop
and to me it is the best tasting greek fig by far.
much better than the famous vasilika sika

@ jdsfrance

i will try to get better pictures
as far as the fig goes it is one of the types that gets dried and sold as dry fig
it does not spoil quickly
but most nurseries cant sell it unless they buy a licence.

this is a rare greek fig named tsapelosiko
it is very sweet and with a beautyful bouquet of flavours.
the figs needed 3 more days on the tree so the pulp would get darker
and the flavor would get more intense.

@ Ed
i dont have to bother with quarentine laws (no one will check. public sector workers just dont care)
but the import tax is between 30-300% and you know that will be painfull.  ;-)

@Frank
i was in the states for 7 years (florida tampa bay area)
if i could have there what i have here, and most importantly
IF i could change my wifes mind (no luck so far)
yes i would change with you (but i would move back to florida)LOL
best of luck my friend.  Andreas

@ Frank
the Internodal distances are at a minimum because the plant grew in traders pot with plain dirt... not potting mix or good soil.
i guess it was the cheapest way out for the nursery.
you are right about the weather
we do have high light levels, full sun, and its warm.
we also have beatyfull islands... however the economy sucks... but its getting better LOL.

@
waynea

the eye should stay small
but with the way i treat it, (((trying to get it to set very fast in the ground with every other day watering
and lots of pellet fertilizer)))
and all that in the last 7 days that it has gone to the ground
one can only guess what the outcome will be.

@ Enigma
hello my greek friend
if you have the same plant, i see no reason to expect anything less than a 10

Hi Rich
if you go through all the trouble to grow just to compare
i think its only fair to the test to add mavra vasilika sika ( black royal greek fig)
you might just find a new #1 fig on your list.

I checked the formula of the cement and it seems there are no chemicals added so it should be safe to use.

if you do that you will lose your plants!!!
it will burn your roots.
i learned that the hard way.
i dont know if the cement here in greece is not the same as yours
but i do know that the company that makes it here in greece has bought out 2 major plants in the USA.

We read various pieces of information with generic descriptions of that cultivar  but fail to see pictures of the real fruit ! On some written material there are pictures not clearly associating images to text and the same pictures are found all over the Internet to show nice 'black figs'.

I decided to try and find out how could I buy some scions to root and/or graft them here and with some luck arrive at the real stuff,,, will keep pushing

As for the W/cup thank you  and hope Fernando may save the honors !

Vasilika Sika means Royal Figs
Vasilika Melissa means Royal HoneyBee

hi i am andreas from greece.
sorry for budding in but
you are both right and wrong.
Vasilika = Royal       Sika = Figs
Vasilika Melissa means Royal HoneyBee ... Melissa = HoneyBee
BUT MELISSI like it says on the photo is a color for the outside of the fig, and it means honey like color on the outside.

now i am sorry to say but the fig in the photo is not vasilika syka...
it has the wrong leaf and the inside of the fig is not dark red enough.

there are 3 types of vasilika figs (sika or syka is just the word for fig in greek)
vasilika mavra (black)
vasilika aspra (white)
and vasilika melissi (the skin is the color of honey)

@ m5allen
hi i just noticed that you are from st.pete
the best thing for you to do is to invest in a 45-50 minute trip to tarpon springs.
try to find local greeks and ask for greek fig tree cuttings. they may not know the type so they will call them mavra (for black) and aspra (for white)
if you get lucky enough you will never eat a mission again in your life!!!
best of luck. andreas

you should try to find the vasilika aspra at some point... you will not regret it.
i do hope that what you have does not look like the plant that is shown on post number 8

I live in the south of Portugal near Faro ( old city Ossonoba apparently founded 1500 BC by Phoenicians traders). These guys may have brought in the first figs.
We grow a good deal of varieties of all types, all tempered by Caprifig wasps freely distributing fig pollen all over.
Do you grow figs ? Are you based in Greece ? I am in fact interested in completing the Vassilika family and in this regard I shall send you a PM or email.

Once we live in a free fig community and if you are interested I can send local Portuguese fig scions.
we also have good Common, Smyrna and San Pedro varieties.

cheers
Francisco

i am in greece and i just grow some local figs for fun.
i have never used scions,i guess it could be fun... figs trees are not that expensive here they are about 15-18 euros for a 2 year old tree... so i just go and get the type that i like.
as for the wasp.
wasps go to figs just because of the honey that drips off the eye of the fig. what makes the difference is a small bug named Blastophaga grossorum.
let me know if you need any more help

KALAMATIANA are great figs. they are the kind people buy dry in the stores.

SMYRNAIKA are good as well.

vasilika melissi is a great choice... now all you need is vasilika mavra and vasilika aspra and you are set for life:-)
if you like i can go to a local nersery and help you get them.

Belleclare"s description of VS:
78. VASILIKA SIKA (Greek, Athens) (King & Queen) (a) large, white, pear-shape blood-red center (2 crops)

hi i am Andreas from greece
i am new here and i would like to let you know that vasilika sika does not have 2 crops.
there are 3 kinds of vasilika sika.
1) vasilika mavra        (black kind of fig)
2) vasilika aspra        (white kind of fig)
3) vasilika melissi       (honey like skin color)
sika is actually spelled with a y not an i but it sounds the same in greek and it is just the word for fig in greek.
any way i hope that helped you.
