Geez! What a surprise! And it's too bad he didn't stay put until you got him home, at least there you could've had a pet snake. BTW, if that was me, I would have been on the side of the road pointing at a snake in my car!

LOL Brettjm!

Welcome to the club!  I really just  got started in rooting cutting this year.  Previously I've only bought plants from members and only attempted rooting unknowns or Celeste from a friend's tree......that all failed!  So thanks for putting into words what all newbies are going through and good luck.

BTW, once you have plants airlayers are much easier!

Waynea, thanks for keeping this thread on track.

Herman, thanks for the ID. Wasn't quite sure but wanted a few more expert opinions.

Grasa, I hope you get an ID on your fig and see you soon. And if there is anyone who can ID figs, that's Herman.

Went to see my friend near the river a few weeks ago and found another fig tree in the same neighborhood.  The tree is about 20 ft tall and just as wide.  I was able to taste the figs and they were good, alot like Celeste but not as sweet.  The leaves are not quite Celeste but could be another variant?  I did a little research and it somewhat looks like a "Southern Brown Turkey"? The fruits on the plate are Celestes and the unknowns I'm trying to ID.  The larger ones are the UNK.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Von

Thanks Charlie and John.

John, hoping yours are not as waterlogged as mine. Hardy Chicago is a great fig. I've started to collect a few more to add to the season, but my HC is my workhorse with about 100 fruits this year.

Hey all. I finally got enough figs to share with my hubby for dessert tonight.  They are Hardy Chicago, a few needed an extra day or so, but with the rain they might have just been a little water logged too. Thanks for looking. HC1.jpg  HC2.jpg

I joined the bandwagon and went to Whole Foods tonight, picked up a Celeste, Spanish Black-not really sure what this is and a BT?, I believe not.  Here are pics of the BT?  This is at the Old Town Whole Foods in Alexandria, VA.

Charlie, nice project. I found air-pots locally for what I think as not a bad price. The .3 gallon are going for $2.50 each, planning on using it as an airlayer pot after some small modifications next year.

As far as maybe not liking figs? Wait till you taste one of your own! You will be forever hooked. And if that one isn't so great there a few more (thousand) varieties you can chose from. LOL

Subject: Stink bugs harmful to fig trees? Replies: 12
Posted By: twovkay Views: 485

Frank,

The only problem I've seen with stink bugs are tomato related. They will pierce the fruit while it's still green, causing a bruise and for the fruit to not ripen correctly or at all. I would assume, all stink bugs to be a bad thing and to get rid of them as best you can. The traps that they sell for them, were a waste of money for me. I've had to resort to getting up early in the morning and tapping them into a jar of soapy water. Hope this helps.

Did not realize that MBVS is not cold hardy? But amazed a fig that has died to the ground every year is productive, good to know. Thanks for the info.

Yes, it is a shame that what is marketed as figs to the public is a shadow of what truly ripe figs can be. Figs unfortunately are fragile fruit that are best eaten right off the tree at peak ripeness, a lot like most fruit, but let me not discourage anyone from trying to find a good fig that has been mass marketed. You never know what you may find, perhaps a gem, somewhere? This was to give a heads up to anyone looking at the figs currently at Costco, that buyer beware is in effect.

Hi, just wanted to update with my HC Breba.  This was picked and eaten last night, wished I had more to eat! But the main crop won't be ripe for another 2-3 weeks.  This is an inground HC, planted this year in early summer. HC Breba on tree.jpg  HC breba halve.jpg

Yesterday, I went to Costco and found these.  Not sure what they are, but I can tell you they were not all ripe and the ones that were, were just sweet and not much more.  Price was $6.99 for 2lbs. And not worth it at any price.

I was hoping that these were satisfy my craving for figs, but nope!
