Thanks for the run down of your fig experience this past winter.  It's very helpful.

Susie,

Nitrogen helps plant foliage to grow strong. Phosphorous helps roots and flowers grow and develop. Potassium (Potash) is important for overall plant health.  So N for more leaf growth. Hope this helps.

Susie,

The only thing I can see as missing is compost.  If you only have sand and gravel, it might be missing micro nutrients from loamy soil.  I top dress my pots every year with compost and given that you have a long growing season, I would do it twice a year.

BTW, I believe stem growth is directly related to the amount of sun available to a plant.  So if your trees are in direct sun, it might produce shorter stems, since it doesn't need to reach for the sun.  Please if I'm wrong with this hypothesis, correct me.  I have had the same plants grown in two different areas of my yard and the ones in the sun are smaller then the ones with some shade to them.

psilva,

I have had luck with both method, but recommend growing the new starts as indoor plants until next year.  Then treat it like any plant you are moving to brighter light, slowly.  I had a Hardy Chicago that was rooted late in the season, I moved it into the house and put it next to a south facing window.  It was fine and is about 2 ft this year and ready for the normal fig shuffle this coming winter/spring.

And yes, it is too bad you are in Canada, it sounds like a great fig to survive in Canada outdoors.

Nice tomatoes! I can't seem to get a break this year with deer and my tomatoes, so I will just admire yours! Have you tried Rose? It is a heirloom variety and great! Not much to look at but very tasty. Very meaty and low acid for those who don't like too much acid.

And jdsfrance, I have tried both of the ones you mentioned and both did nothing for me here. You might have the perfect weather for them to produce great tomatoes.

Thanks everyone. That's too bad about Hardy Chicago! It's the only one so far that I have extras. I guess they will have to wait another year before getting a fig tree.

Hi,

This question is for anyone in the Pacific NorthWest area, mainly Seattle. How does Hardy Chicago do for you? And when does it ripen? I've promise a fig tree to relatives in that area, but want to make sure this variety does well there. Or if not this fig? Which others do well for you? Thanks!

Steve,

I don't know, since I'm new to figs and just acquire this tree last year. I have heard that the onset of Breba will delay the main fruit, whether that means delay in ripening main fruit or delay in formation of fruit? Not sure, but I thought I had some figlets developing a few days ago, they turn out to be leaf nodes. My tree is about 5 ft tall with a side branch in a 5 gallon pot. I've seen a battaglia green recently in our area where there are fruits and they will ripen this year. The person who owns this tree removed his Breba and the tree is older, but again in a pot. Will ask him when he will expect to have his figs ripen and will report back.

Matt, I'm in northern VA, and I'm still weeks away. I have a Breba, 1st one this year that just started to swell and change color. It's still a few days from ripening. Will post when it does.

Otmani, I'm using 50/50, Fafard 52mix and miracle grow moisture from Costco. All my figs are in this mixture. The Fafard 52mix lightens the mix.

Thanks, Gloria!

The cuttings were planted on 6/17 and this was taken on 8/1, so about 45 days, put directly in pot with hormones on the root. I have another that has had a green bud for the last 3 weeks and has just started to break bud.

My Battaglia Green is a 2 year old tree.  It gave me 2 breba this year but no main fruit. Maybe next year.  This is the second breba with a small eye opening and could have use another day on.  It was sweet with a slight hint of berry and thin skin.  We noticed that the skin was as sweet as the meat.  The coin is a silver dollar. Thanks for looking.

For roses, remove the leaves and start spraying with a fungicide every 2-3 weeks. Roses are very hard to grow in my area. The conditions are just not right for it here. I had to make to sure to feed with a systemic feeder every 6 weeks and spray the fungicide every 2 weeks and I still had issues with growing them. I finally gave up and admire my father-in-laws roses when I visit Portland, OR.

If you visit a big box store, they will have ready to use rose fungicide and concentrate.
