Agreed! They look delicious! How do they taste?

Scott,

My Hardy Chicago gets to about quarter size before they stall, then swell and ripen. It looks like damage from a bug that pierced the fruit. Only suggestion is to cover the fruit with the organza bags until they are ready to go. I had a few that looked like that last year and they seemed to ripen anyway.

Needaclone, I'm open to all and any suggestion as to what it could be, including Brunswick. I guess at this time only time and a fruit will tell.

Thanks needaclone,

I have a brunswick and it comes close but not quite. All my brunswick fingers are about the same size.  I think this will be a mystery until I get some fruit.

Thanks waynea!

Mike,

I used a 50/50 of Fafard 52mix and Miracle gro 60% from Costco.  I did cut the bark on the bigger air layer, but just barely took a sliver out, added some powder hormones to the cut, pinned it down with sod staple, add additional soil on top of the cut.  As the roots grew, I took out the pin, added more soil and needed to add additional brace so more soil could be added.

On the smaller one, it was a green branch.  So I just scratched it a few times and put very little rooting hormones on it.  By the time I remembered to do those things, the bottle was already on and I was working in a tight area. Finally foiled to keep the sun off of the roots.

Both Air layers were put on the drip system, so they were watered twice daily.

Still attached to the mother tree with drip system.

Right after it was taken off.

Small one, when I started this the branch, it was only 1' high.

Yes! jdsfrance,

Figs has become an obsession, and other then doing a backup for Hardy Chicago, I have a few friends who have tasted this variety and have asked for plants. So a duplicates or 3 for each plant I like a lot, otherwise they will go to friends or for trade.

Thanks, jdsfrance.

Don't you just love all the "BT" being sold out there?  I'm hoping it will gives me some figs next year so I can repost with the fruit.  But I'm not holding my breath on this one.  Good luck with yours and if you find out what it is, would love to know.

Hi,

I am trying to ID this fig and was wondering if it is a BT.  It was sold as such, but as I have read, that doesn't always prove correct.  If it is a BT, what strain? This plant roots like crazy, I can't kill it!  Thanks for any input.

Very large leaf, about the size of paper.

The leaves on the left is Colsanti BT, the leaves on the right is the "BT"

On 6/4/14 I did a couple of air layers on my Hardy Chicago.  I have not been overly successful with cuttings of almost any kind except a "BT" which has never given me a fig and died down to the ground this past winter.

I removed the cutting on 7/25, about 50 days from the start and they are both doing fine.  I'm so ecstatic with the results.  Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed doing them and watching the process.

BTW, as a result, I'm doing an another air layer with Battaglia Green and LSU Purple!

Costas, I just brush it on with a pastry brush, not all of it will stick. I forgot to mention, I also sprinkle a little on the unripen figs. And its seems like if you are a little heavy handed like I am, the cinnamon will stay even after a shower or two.

Costas,

I reapply when I see ants again. We have been getting T-showers almost everyday and I'm not reapplying everyday. I'm also thinking of brushing some of the cinnamon onto the bottom of the trunk up about 3-4 inches.

Read on here from another member here, sorry forgot who, but cinnamon around the base and in pots too. I've tried it and it seems to work. I was able to get a battaglia green Breba before the ants did.

Thanks for sharing the article. I always wonder how interesting it would be if someone would do a documentary on the history of figs? I would enjoy it and I think other people would come to know our passion for them. It would be fun to see some of the huge collections out there.

I'm sure you are right, but since a fence is out of the question. I was hoping someone here had good luck with this method of deer control. Wishful thinking on my part.

I have been having a lot of problems with deer this year, they even took a bite out of my fig trees. Wondering if anyone has tried any of the electronic deer repellents? Are they worth the money? Thanks from a frustrated gardener.

Hi,

With weird weather we had this pass spring my VdB has just started putting on figlets. I'm located in the northern Virginia area and am wondering if I should remove them or do I have enough time to let them ripen? It is a 2-3 year old plant from EL, purchase last year and has about 4 figlets forming. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Tim,

I have a drip system for my potted plants which includes figs and it gives me peace of mind when I'm traveling. I am no longer depended on someone to water my plants when I'm not able. It is a very simple setup and not hard once you know the basic. I started with a container kit and added on from there. One thing that drip depot did right was to educated me on the sizing for tubes. I have it set it up where I use 1/2" tubing as the main line and work off of it with the 1/4" tubing connected to the pots. The 1/2 tubing will let you have a continuous line for anything over 50 feet. Another bit of advice for anyone wanting to do this is to buy extra 1/4" line, you use lots of it.

It doesn't get any better. I just brought back 4 plants from visiting my parents on the west coast. 4 hours of constructing a box to make them fit the airline rules and my husband was not too happy with me. Maybe the fig obsession will fade a bit in the coming years, but not quite yet....from one addict to another, welcome.
