What I experienced in my family's greenhouse is that the heater will dry the air immediately if turned on. We have got an electric radiator and although the temps are @ maybe 40-45° at night (inside the greenhouse in winter) the pots will dry out faster than it is warmer outside and you don't need to heat.

So you probably don't need to worry about high humidity!

How big is your tree? I recently bought a tomato green house for about 20 € and put it over my unknown fig to maybe get the main crop to ripen up faster.

The owner of a big fig nursery explained me that it's possible to have different leave shapes but the same fruit.

What I recognised also when I joined the forum, the Violett de Bordeaux's in Europe have an extreme different leave shape than the ones that I see from the mostly U.S.users here.
The U.S. plants use to have big leaves with a kind of "five finger look".
The negronnes or VdB from France or Germany or the U.K. are less shaped with rounder leaves.
I wonder what might be the cause...

As living in a more cooler climate I can't image how it's without any rain for such a long period of time.
This summer we had no rain for about 4 weeks and it felt like half a year.
I am glad you're able to enjoy sone rain now!

I think you have to have a good balance between light and heat. If it is dark and foggy over weeks in the winter you shouldn 't heat up the place too much. The young plants will shoot out very weak then. If it is sunny the temps can be higher.

These are my august cuttings that developed some good growth and strong roots. It seemed much faster than my cuttings in spring. The cuttings are grown indoors so I will definitely keep them inside till next year. They're also in a south facing window in an unheated room. Temps drop below 55 degrees in coldest time of the winter. I am curious if the cuttings will just stop growing or if they'll drop it's leaves and go dormant.

The more colder darker climates would basically need a homemade indoor greenhouse, and a growing light that does not burn the plants, and that does not dry out the soil too much.

I think I might keep it in a unheated room directly in front of the window so the plants get as much light as possible.
Because I started the cuttings inside and the nights drop down to temps at around  55 degrees now I will keep them indoors.Let's see if they 'll go into a dormant or slow growing mode in the winter...

I am asking myself what is the best method for getting an late summer/fall cutting over the winter especially when you live in colder climates with short and dark days...keep the young plant relatively warm and growing, or put it at about december/january in cooler place and let it go dormant?

Some update picture of my cuttings spending mothertree that is suppose to be "Bayernfeige/Bavarianfig  Violetta"

As i mentioned before the tree ist getting not much sun so i guess under the full south sun the fruit will be a lot darker?

Just to make sure once and for all:

BV yes or no? ;-)

I rooted several cuttings in March and now again at the end of August.
In my opinion fall cuttings root much faster than dormant ones. In fact I rooted two cuttings in just 6 days when it was very hot and humid over here. My spring cuttings needed about 2 to three weeks. The critical point might as others mentioned to get them over the wintertime when there will be a lag of light... I am going to learn more about that process too.

Hi Dale! Nice to hear from you. I chose "Feigenbaum" because it is the german word for "fig tree". I guess it is an old jewish name. I really like the sounding of it!

Btw: "Nussbaum" means hazelnut tree

Thanks rcantor and Liza,

I am not the owner of the mothertree but I received several cuttings from it. The spot of that mothertree is not very sunny but in the opposite it had no frostdamage at all this spring. .. so I hope to get some nice figs next year from that cuttings. Until now I grow all my figtrees in pots and they spent the summer on my terrace (south facing) where the stones can retain the heat from the sun. So I guess I am offering them a good micro-climate.

I think that is why you do not find it in Germany.

You could be right Herman!
Maybe only in a greenhouse.

I was just wondering, because i also looked on french sites and south france is a hot mediterranian climate too...and the Videos on YT where this  nice guy from New England ( Which has maybe a comparable climate to me) he also grew Black madeiras or ischia blacks or lsu gold...you find negronnes over here and ronde de bordeaux but such varieties i have never seen...

Yeah i was thinking exactly the same...the tree is not in a very nice spot for a fig it is overcast most of the time and only a few hours sun! This was the only fig this year but it was cutted a bit to heavy in springtime...

It is the mothertree i received some cuttings from. In my garden it will get much more heat and sun because it is south-facing.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome! :-)

So you mean with "the real deal" this could be really a  bavarianfig/ bayernfeige violetta?

I was taken some picture but not from the leaves especially...i remembered some of the leaves looked just like Brown Turkey leaves and some looked like a round type like a mulberry tree...i will do some pictures of the leaves tomorrow!

Hi guys,

My name is Christian i am 35 years old and i am from northern germany.
I was very into figs and citruses when i was a teenager but over the years my priorities went in another direction.

In  early spring i was given some fig cuttings from a friend of mine and i wanted to make sure they root and grow and mature to nice healthy fig trees.
So i searched a little bit in the www how to propagate figs and i was very inspired by a
pleasant fig grower from New England. He has great Videos on YouTube.

So i really "caught fire" again :-)

Right now i own several varieties like L'd A, Hardy Chicago,Goutte'D or, Brown Turkey, Bornholmfig, just to name a few...

I am very facinated like the US grown varieties Like Black Madeira or Ischia Black... although those varieties are originaly from europe you don't get it over here...
neither some one knows it.

Now I also got one question on this varietie,  because  am not very long into figs...this supposed to be a "Bayernfeige Violetta" or "Bavarianfig Violetta" but the fruit doesn't really look like the figs i find when i google them...

Sorry if my english aint the best ;-)
