Looking good Vinny, it goes to show that there's more than one way to skin cat when it comes to rooting figs. How long did it take the grafts to get to this point with such nice leaf growth?

Subject: How do you get fig tree trunk to grow thicker? Replies: 15

I read that silica can also help plants develop thicker hardier trunks. So I experimented on a basil growing hydroponically, I applied "silica blast" to it's regiment of fertilizer on a weekly basis. The stem of the basil was almost 2 fingers thick after a few months. I wish I took a picture of it back then.

I'm currently using it on my figs, it claims to help plants be hardier and survive drought and frost situations better.

pm me your address, I'll send you couple of cuttings to get you started.

The cuttings will not have roots. But there's about a million ways you can learn how to root them right here on this forum. It's where I learned and trialed all the various techniques. Some work better than others but you'll figure out after killing 1 or 200 what will work best for you. =)

I've rooted cutting in the dead of summer without any issue. keep them in your house where the temps are more consistent.

I first learned about Bill Farhat from a Seattle Times article.

http:// http://blogs.seattletimes.com/allyoucaneat/2013/08/19/a-fig-tree-grows-in-seattle-the-man-his-mission-propagation/

I love meeting other fig folks especially if they are local to me. So it was very gracious of him to share his experience with growing figs since he has been growing them for 30 years. He likes to keep it simple, which is a great lesson for most of us. I know I tend to over think things. =)

He gave me a tour of his fig trees and we discussed how he grows them in Seattle. Check out the Video below.

They are a favorite variety in Seattle and are a staple in many local nurseries. I made a convenient list on my page for online nurseries and individual sellers that should be helpful to you.

If you want cuttings I should have a couple that I can send you for free.

they are super easy to grow from seed and cuttings. They are also quick to bear, my 2nd year tree was loaded. I leave them out in the winter in pots here in the Seattle area without fear of winter damage

take a node or 2 to graft and the rest to root, best of both worlds! I did that with my P.T. and few other varieties.

Hi its Ben, First off thanks for watching the video.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone's ever actually watching my videos lol. But I do fig videos because I enjoy figs and want to share my passion for them.

For me, when I say umami about the Smith fig, it's more of the lingering rich almost buttery taste that I get from the smith. Most of that flavor comes from the syconium. It's like the same sensation and after taste of eating a piece of werthers caramel candy in your mouth. Not to the same intensity but similar.

That sweet slightly savory taste is what I was trying to describe as umami. I think it's a great fig and does well in seattle.

I'm still waiting for my Preto and and bm to bear fruit. Based on most accounts those have a spectacular taste even better than Smith.

I'm sure it will work. I've seen a papaya tree grown in DWC. I've tried it for my tomatoes and the results were 3x the amount of tomatoes compared to the soiled plants.

http://seattlegardenfruit.blogspot.com/2015/08/tomatoes-hydroponic-vs-traditional.html

Charlie Little also has a sand experiment completely soil-less without the bubbler and has some amazing results. His cuttings reached the ceiling within a few months.

Look up Dr Musaru Emoto's experiment on using positive words and it's affect on water and also the same experiment and it's affect on rice. After seeing that I'm religious about writing love on all my rooting and water containers.

The power of intention is a powerful thing.

Has it worked? Yes, I've seen much less mold on my cuttings.

Using my "amazing" artistic skills this is how i can tell if a cutting is upside down.

If you see a Big Smile its the right side up if it looks like a Frown it's upside down!

I bought one called the green goliath,

this looks different from magnolia. I saw another listing called just called "goliath" on ebay and that one does look more like a magnolia.

I'm debating on whether or not it's worth the effort to grow barbados cherries in the Pacific Northwest climate as a container plant. Which probably means bring it in for the winters.

This stayed on the tree a bit too long. It was so ripe it fell off the tree from it's on own weight. Half expecting a sour fig from the look of the skin, It was surprising good. It tasted like a cocktail of honey with fruit tones.
