Subject: collecting cuttings from trees that are not dormant Replies: 12

I have been rooting cuttings since July 2009 and still rooting some now and will be throught out the winter. Preferably wood thats atleast one year old works best but new years growth works just as well with a little more TLC.

The only issue I have found with new growth is if the leaf steams are not removed completely and cuttings are put directly into soil I have found they do mold and can rot alittle easier, thats why now I try to remove the leaves about a week before I take cuttings ofcourse this is taking them from my own plants.

When Travelling or in a few cases when you take cuttings and make a run for it lol I find putting them in the fridge for a week solves that problem as the leftover leaf steams readily fall out. Again this has been my own observation after rooting over 200 cuttings in the last year.

Yep they were definately fertile. Seeds from half a fig only can imagine if I would of thrown all the seeds in.

Rafed this Bronze Paradiso is a different fig than Joe Morle's Paradiso. My plant was given to me by Dusan who was the one that collected cuttings in Italy and since has shared a few plants with a few forum member's across canada. This particular fig also produces allot of Twin's two figs per node.

Akram my plant is now 4 years old and every year produces and ripens allot of figs. They usually start ripening from 3 week of august all the way up to mid to late october here in Toronto. Im sure you will be very pleased with this fig when it starts producing.

My favorite fig out of my collection, last month figs have been completely round very different than last season and its the only fig I have that almost feels like it tastes better as the temps start to cool down. In the last month figs have been excellent.

Bronze Paradiso Picked Last night

Hi Akram, The Ficazzana ripened quite a few figs this season I received the bareroot plant this year from Grimo in late may. First ripe figs were first week of september and it is by far the best tasting out of these three. The Black Yugoslavian was the first fig to ripen for me from Cutings I got from Dusan last summer flavour was average but plant is also very young flavour was very similar to the Monrovia BT I had. This was the second fig the Black Minho ripened first was allot sweeter and  ripened around Sept.15th This one in the picture flavour was just average.

Vasile to be honest with you I am having the same dilemma, they have been ripening one at a time almost a week apart not sure if its due to the cooler temperatures we have had the last two weeks, but I too only pick one fig at a time.

Thank You Vasile out of the other Brown Turkey's that I have tasted  this one so far is the best tasting one and is only in its first season so im sure with time it will only get better. The other Brown Turkey I have with the horrizontal growth had two figs that turned almost a burgundy colour but the squirls got to them before I did hopefully atleast one of the figs will ripen to see what it tastes like.

Ok Picked these figs last night from left to right we have Ficazzana from Grimo, Black Yugoslavian in the middle and Unknown Black Fig from Minho region of Portugal Supposedly.

BLACK YUGOSLAVIAN

BLACK MINHO FIG  not fully ripe

FICAZZANA FROM GRIMONUT

Best balanced flavour was from the Ficazzana followed by the Black yugoslavian its a huge fig need to eat it like an Apple. The Black Minho was not fully ripe but was sweet and had crunchy seeds looks very similar to brown turkey. All three plants are young and again we have been having rain every day this week and none of the figs on the plants split so far.

Thanks Sal I am impressed on how much this plant wants to please lol

Martin I have a few plants that are done for the season some of wich are already loosing leaves. But I have a few that are still ripening figs as we speak and most of them have been tasting quite good. Will I be rooting this winter well more than likely yes.

Rafed, this looks like a promising fig for cooler zones as does the pane vino white Im sure you will enjoy both. I cant wait to see how it will perform next season.

Oh I forgot the pics of the last two figs I picked these were picked on sept.28th took pics yesterday morning. This is after 3 straight days of rain

Not as sweet as the first two but still tasted good.

Hey Jon seems like you been lucky with quite a few of your seedlings. I recently discarded my Anatolian seedlings and only kept my Kadota seedlings think the odds will be a little better with the kadota but like you said just for fun. What colour were the figs from the RajaS ?

Herman that is very possible I usually dont pay too much attention to leaf shapes until I see figs but man these too just look the same to me, in leaf form ofcourse.

Thank you Bass for the photo, the fig too is similar both my plants are still small but hopefully next season they will both ripen some figs to see a little better. Bass you have both what do you think?

Fig tastes quite good an I had over 2 dozen figs on my tree this year but I picked off half seems like that did the job. Definate keeper

I was given a rooted cutting in late April this year by a fellow friend and forum member. By July plant had grown to 3ft and started growing figs. I was not expecting to taste any figs from this plant this year considering its only 6 months old but it surprised me, and cosidering weather has been cool and rainy the figs tasted quite good.

First figs that ripened on Sept.24th

My Monrovia BT wich I got rid of produced extremely large figs, this was the first to ripen and smallest at 160 grms.

And this is why I got rid of it.

Herman sorry to hear about your dog I too lost my pitbull this year also 14 years old best guard dog we ever had I sure miss him. This year the stupid squirls stole all my Capelas figs thats the only fig tree they attacked and I mean attacked those little buggers bit behind the fig stem and took off a piece of bark and all out of all the figs I had on the tree. Now I have patches of bark missing on the tree and doubt it will branch out there since the Branch embryos are gone where they did the damage.

Hey Jon, I have been searching for an answer for quite some time and cant seem to find anything on the net on this subject.

A common type fig like Mission lets say if it gets caprified those seeds become fertile, would this increase the amound of seedlings that would be of the common type compared to seedlings that had smyrna type parentage?

Or if one used a edible caprifig as the father and common type mother technically the odds should be even higher NO?

I mean somebody must of thought this through at some point when doing hybrids.

This weekend I bought some Kadota figs from California at a local grocery store as I was eating them I noticed every so often I would get one with dark pulp and tasted better, to my taste buds atleast. Just wanted to know if the ones with dark pulp could of been Fertilized? Ofcourse I had to sacrifice one of those figs and pull out the seeds and sow them just to see what would happen. Oh by the way the ones that had the darker pulp were greener in colour compared to the others.

Thank You Herman, no signs of fmv on either plant thus far. The Brown Turkey plant with the weeping branches seems like an ideal plant to go inground as it would be easy to cover up for the winter.

Hopefully they ripen some figs as its been very hot the last week hopefully this weather keeps up so we can see exactly what it is. Will definately be keeping both for a while and see how well they do for me.

Bob I dont really know any info on the either one of the plants both bought the same day at that nursery and both labeled fig bush, hopefully when fruit ripen we can try and figure out what it might possibly be.

Herman thank you for your reply I agree with the leaf shape and is the reason I bought it.The three embryos is definately a new one for me and dont doubt it was sprayed seems all too commong now a days. The second plant on the last picture on the right has a funny growing habit all the branches seem to weep and is growing bushy.

Here are some pics of the second plant I thought I had posted but clearly didn't.

A couple weeks ago while buying some potting mix and checking out the figs for sale at plant world a local Nursery I noticed this fig tree for 20 bucks and since I had some credit at that nursery I purchased it the only thing labeled was fig bush. One thing I did noticed on this plant that have not noticed on any other of my plants is that It has 3 embryos at nearly everynode basically producing allot of twins with a new branch in between the figs. Well anyhow here are some pics hopefully figs will ripen soon and will post pics to comfirm.
