Fespo,

I've had my Fiskars for 5 years now. I sharpen them yearly and they are just great. For something I use with frequency(a car, my home, etc) you can't replace quality with quantity. If it comes to something I use a few times a year, I'll buy the 20 dollar ones and maintain them.

For the price of afelco pruner, I could buy new Fiskars yearly.

Hi Gene

I have the same cuttings from George.  My Maltese Beauty is already 6 inches high, but in my case i made a mistake with my maltese falcon. The entire cutting sprouted roots so to gamble I cut it in half in an attempt to have 2 trees. While both are still rooting well, neither has pushed leaves. They look to still be in good health but I just hope that they have enough energy to flush some leaves.

I have but only when I have rust issues. I think there is something on the bottle that says its not to be used on food crops, but im careful and only spray the infected leaves.

All I know is I see red flags when a newbie comes in without an introduction and demands FREE cuttings.  But really, many of our members are "men of few words," but they still love to grow figs.

Rules?  Hate em!

I'm here because until now, this has been a very friendly and kind forum.  It's going down slowly.  Too much drama for me!  I may only lurk for valuable information, and conversations on PM with the friends I know and love.  Please don't ruin this forum....  I left Garden Web due to this kind of stuff.

FIGS 4 FUN!  FUN!  Get it?

Suzi

You are going overboard. Nobody is DEMANDING free cuttings. Your perception is not the reality.  People are grateful for free cuttings (like i'm sure you are).  People come on, are intrigued and are looking to get into the hobby for a low cost(as i'm sure you did).
I have heard that you have been pretty blunt with new members about not wanting to share your plants and cuttings with them and that's your right. But it may not be how other people on the forum want to operate.  Did you ever receive free cuttings when you first joined? Did you ever consider that maybe the lack of compassion shown towards new members is detrimental to the site? Does it really kill anyone to send 2 or three pieces of scion wood to a new person? What are you going to do when that noob you shunned finds a FMV free Black Ischia in his backyard? Will you be upset when when he/she won't send you any?
I myself was fortunate that a member of this board was more than kind to get me started. I am eternally grateful.  I have made it a point to pay it forward as best as I can; to follow his example. There are a lot of members here who i've given plants and cuttings to for free because of the kindness I received(and I still owe some people cuttings). Have I had a bad experience or 2...sure. But the good more than outweighs the bad. And i've made some friends along the way.
I'm still a "noob". I welcome other "noobs" to the board. I welcome everyone's input. It's a chat board. Along with the good comes the not so good.

Here's my update:
These are definitely no easy rooters. I have been trying both the bag method and direct sowing into cups with really well drained soil. 1 of the 5(in the bag of sphagnum) put out some small roots, which I potted. Fingers crossed. No other cuttings have put out roots. Will give them more time.

I didnt really get into hunting until I bought property that was deer infested. Now I solve 2 problems with 1 arrow. My plants don't get eaten as much and I have a freezer full of protein.

Some people at work are surprised to find that I shoot deer and eat them...as they are munching on a cheeseburger that came from a cow raised in deplorable conditions and fed chemicals.

I was hunting before the end of fig season. Just took my buck this weekend here in NJ. You can hunt from the end of september until February here now. Good news for me is I can hunt in my backyard now. Is that a photoshopped buck? Biggest I've seen on the camera is a big 10

I purchased 2 of these from that nursery. One went to a member of this board, the other I have planted in-ground. I promised some cuttings to members which I will send once I have power.

Ive rooted 10 cuttings in simple MG soil with 100% effectiveness. If you are local to North Jersey or NYC and want one, i'm happy to give it away. send me a PM. may take me a day or 2 to respond

Pete,

Monrovia makes a pretty robust hardy kiwi. They are 60 percent off up here in NJ and they are 4 ft tall. some even have kiwi on them

Pete,

I ordered hardy kiwi from them. they were REAL SMALL and not all that healthy. I nursed them back to health only for the deer to eat them to the ground.  Worth a shot.

Why not make them permanent. Cut some small air holes and you should be good to go all winter long. Am I missing something as to why they can't be permanent winter protection?

Funny you should ask.  I literally was checking them 5 minutes ago. Two of the cuttings went into opaque cups in a mix of 45% vermiculite, 45% perlite, 10% sphagnum. They are "tented" with baggies. I can not see the roots since the cups are opaque. There is no top growth present. I dont plan on checking root growth for at least 2 more weeks.

The 3 others are in Moist sphagnum in a dark cabinet above the fridge. 1 of them has just started rooting, 1 is showing initials, and the other one hasn't done much of anything.  But that's where they are to date. I'll update you when I check on them again next weekend!

Art,

This thing really is an easy rooter! Direct sowed them in Miracle Grow seedling/cutting mix blended with an extra bag of perlite. 2 of the 3 I kept have leaves and thick roots. Really hoping this thing tastes good!

Are there any trees of what you are selling growing in the US and proved to be cold hardy or you just assume they are cold hardy? Winter temperatures in Cyprus and DE, MD are quite different. One more thing is that people would like to buy unrooted cuttings, so that way they could root them the way they like and not being afraid of shipping damage and dead roots. Fresh, dormant cuttings in February-March would be even better.

How do you know his name is Carl? Can you guys stop this charade please?  Move on.

Ok. I don't want to be rude but I'm calling BS. The listing on eBay is for a tree allegedly from LEBANON. Now it's Cyprian in origin? At a minimum your ebay ad is misleading.

I received my sunfire cuttings today. 3 went into a bag surrounded by sphagnum into a dark spot and 2 of the more lignified pieces went into cups with a perlite/vermiculite/spagnum blend. Put a bag on top of each to simulate a greenhouse. Fingers crossed!

George,

If the democrats stay in power maybe I can get a crack at some of your fig trees. You have so ma y an I have so few. So you can afford to give me some of your trees. You are a fig 1%'er!!!

Ps: I'm obviously a republican and enjoy sarcasm.
